Tattoo's - A Brief History
Tattoo's served many purposes other than adornement.

People have always tried to enhance their looks. Therefore, jewelery, clothes and other accessories have been present since the beginning of time. One of the oldest ways of decorating one's body known to humans was the tattoo. Here is a brief history of the tattoo.
Tattoo's have long been used for all types of purposes since way back. They have served as symbols of rights, symbols of rank and seniority or being juniors, symbols of spirituality, religion, rewards and awards for bravery, talismans and security. Tattoos were also used as an indicator of punishments, being outcast, slavery and conviction. Tattoos have been one of the most frequently used body arts.
Tattoo the word is derived from the Polynesian word, 'tatao', which means to tap or to mark somebody. The word was coined by Captain James Cook in 1769. The original way of applying tattoos was more brutal than it is today. A sharp comb would be dipped into lampblack and then moved around on the body. The practice then spread from the Polynesian and Tahitians to the Europeans.
Proof of tattooing practices from five thousand years ago has been uncovered. Early Egyptian, Roman, Greek and Japanese civilizations practiced the art.
The Greeks frequently used tattoos to denote slavery. The Mayas, Incans and the Aztecs are known to use tattoos. Tattoos were sometimes also used as a mark or symbol of belonging to a tribal group or tribe.
Tattoos have had other uses in different regions. Tattoo's in Egypt can be found as early as before the Pyramids were made. The Asian world used tattoos to denote a woman coming of age or her marriage. Japan used tattoos for religious purposes and other ceremonial purposes. Tattoos were also used to induce the sexuality in a person.
The women of Borneo were the first to use tattoo's to indicate the status in life of the owner of the tattoo.

The Japanese Tattoo
The Japanese TattooAmerican photographer Sandi Fellman used a rare large size Polaroid camera to create these photos of Irezumi Japanese men and women who wear elaborate full-body tattoos. Fellman treats the tattoos as artworks and their creators as artists. Her text touches on the tattooing process, common motifs, the sociology of the tattoo, and relationships between the tattoo masters and their clients. Author D.M. Thomas has contributed two pages of his reactions to these unusual and even disturbing images. The 46 color plates in this volume, most of them whole body nudes, should prove provocative, fascinating, or repellant to a wide variety of library patrons.
