Books that talk about how tattooing is done
Traditionally a tattoo artist learns via an apprenticeship. You can't accurately tell someone how to tattoo. It has to be shown to you. And you have to practice a lot first too. The stories of people practicing tattooing include references to grapefruit, daikon radishes, oranges, and whole hams. It's also tradition for a new tattooist to do their first piece of work on themselves, so they know just how painful their technique is for when they go to work on that first customer.
While you work on your drawing skills and try to find an artist who will take you on as a tattoo apprentice, it can't hurt to read up a bit. For a great account of what a tattoo apprenticeship can be like, read Karol Griffin's SKIN DEEP where she tells of how she learned to tattoo. That chapter is also included in the anthology DOROTHY PARKER'S ELBOW.

This part is interchangeable and the artist can rig up their machines to use just a single needle (as for fine-line work) or they can adjust the machine to use groupings of needles. Different line weights and shading effects from from the number of needle points and whether the tips are arranged in a straight line or in a circular formation.
