For a great account of what a tattoo apprenticeship can be like, read Karol Griffin's SKIN DEEP where she tells of how she learned to tattoo. That chapter is also included in the anthology DOROTHY PARKER'S ELBOW.

Which is more important to you when it comes to tattooing? Should an artist have an art degree from college? Can a self-taught illustrator who gets an apprenticeship be just as good as someone who studied art at school? When people are asked this question they generally are only thinking about the art aspect of it, when in my opinion it is far more important to learn infection control and how to tattoo safe. Anyone can pick up a machine and tattoo somebody, and when a scratcher causes someone to get an infection it gives the tattoo community a bad rep as a whole.

More than just the technique of applying the tattoo, hygiene is extremely important. I would want to know that a person doing my tattoo has been properly taught how to clean and sterilize the equipment and maintain a clean work space. Having taken classes to become a CNA, I know first hand that reading a book and seeing it done (and having the opportunity to practice) are two different experiences.

A Tattoo Artist is not much different then a salon, so Stylists need licenses before they can even touch a head and the salons undergo rigid state inspections to make sure they are following safety rules. so should a Tattoo Artist. I just broke down and allowed my 17 year old daughter to get her nose pierced. I must say the Tattoo place we went to was very professional, clean and they really took safety precautions.

Training is very important to me. How to prevent infection and any other problems that might arise- what the best products are etc. The natural talent to draw well is great, but there is more to being a tattoo artist. If the artist does attend training then they are also more likely to learn about and understand the laws.

I think skilled illustrators can teach themselves to tattoo and it's okay because...

My cousins both artists (graffiti and the like) that eventually became tattoo artist. They are both high school drop outs with WICKED art talent, they just got into the wrong crowd. They started with self made tattoos, but eventually they learned from experts. They attended expos all over, learned how to be safe and sterile. One of them who is successful at his own business even got tattooed in New Zealand and has had the real Hawaiian tapping tattoo done on him. All as a learning experience about his craft. So artists don't have to go to school to get an art degree but I really feel they should know how to be safe when practicing their craft.
