Teaching Your Kids To Read
Ranked #6,129 in Education, #137,312 overall
Each child is different and will start reading at different ages
Children usually begin to want to learn to read when they are five or six. Many parents are content to wait until their children go to school and have them learn to read at that time.
But each child is different and will be ready to learn to read at different times. Some parents are intimidated by the thought of teaching their own children to read and don't want to push too hard. In today's busy world there are many parents who just don't have the time to invest in teaching their children how to read.
Reading is a basic skill that is needed for success in just about any career. Many people take this skill for granted. Parents should not assume that their children will get everything they need to become a good reader at school. It helps if the partners are involved in their kid's education from the very beginning. As your children matures there are many ways to help them learn to read and encourage a lifelong love of reading.

A Reading Environment
If you have created a positive environment about books and reading in your home chances are your child will be excited about reading when they are ready. For parents who do not have a lot of time to work on reading skills with their children there are some wonderful software programs that are affordable and reasonably priced.
Other Ways to Teach Them How To Read
One of the great things about the internet is that it gives us access to a wide array of software programs that can help kids learn to read. Many of these programs are for sale where you can order a CD or DVD and then install it on your computer. Others are available for downloading directly from the website. Still others are available as online programs where you pay a registration fee in order to have access to the programs. There are some that offer a free trial before you need to pay a fee so you can know your child enjoys playing the games they offer. Link List

- "Moby Dick" by age five, or your kid won't survive.... as well as he/she could. .... IMV, the challenge, as we move forward, is that too many teachers simply do not know how to teach lightly-motivated kids to read; once that cornerstone skill is shortchanged, the future is lost. ... My kids all went thru a combo of private-schools and homeschooling. Each was a competent reader by age five. They all turned out fine; even tho they all hated me while I was making sure the outcome would be good. ... One of my daughters told me the only reason she initially wanted to be a lawyer was so that she could sue me for intentional infliction of emotional distress. Now, a lawyer/accountant, she is far "meaner" to her kids than her "stern/cold/hard" father ever was to her. She says she "just wants to make sure that they succeed." I can dig it.

- It is important to instill a love of reading in kids if at all possible. Wish I had been given more time to read when I was a kid. Great lens topic!
