Teaching A Puppy Not To Bite

It's true puppies love to bite.

They all do it naturally but it is something they must be taught not to do.

Puppy biting needs to be addressed early while they are young because dog bites can lead to all sorts of problems including legal action.

Let me show you all about teaching a puppy not to bite the right way.

How To Teach A Puppy Not To Bite

Teaching your puppy to not bite

It may seem fun and funny to have a little puppy biting you but a full-grown dog can do a lot of damage, particularly to children if that dog is in the habit of biting.

Dogs have immense strength in their jaws and even a playful nip can do permanent damage to a child.

Generally, puppies are taught to control their biting from their mothers but in most cases we get puppies as pets that have been taken from their mothers at a very young age and now it's up to us to teach them while they are still puppies not to bite.

Here's something most people don't think about but by letting your dog socialize with other dogs from a young age they will quickly learn from their elders, provided they have been taught well, that the desire to bite needs to be curbed to avoid retaliation and an ensuing fight.

Taking Your Puppy To A Dog Training School

More tips on teaching a puppy not to bite

Taking a puppy to a dog training school will allow it to interact with the other dogs and it will quickly be corrected for any misbehavior.

Puppies should generally learn to interact with other dogs within the first three months of their life. The longer this is left undone the more difficult it becomes for your dog to socialize correctly and your dog can become dangerous later in life.

Just like with children, the sooner your puppy learns correct behavior patterns the better he will be in the long term.

It all boils down to the sooner your puppy is taught not to bite by you or by interaction with other dogs, the less aggressive he will become and the more pleasant he will be to live with when he grows up.

Steps To Teaching A Puppy NotTo Bite

Teaching your puppy to stop biting

Being consistent in this training is the key. If you have kids, it is important that you educate them exactly in what to do. Biting is a natural act in a puppy. They play with their litter mates by biting, so they will naturally do it with your kids too.

First you must understand how puppies behave with their brothers and sisters. They stop biting if one of their litter mates yelps, so all you have to do is yelp like a puppy any time that he nibbles on your fingers. He will stop and you can move your hand away. Stop playing with him after he bit you. Use praise and treats when you are playing and he doesn't bite you at all.

Keep your training sessions with your puppy short. He doesn't have a long attention span. Do keep the training positive and your voice happy. Give lots of praise. Pet the puppy when he pays attention to what you are saying.

Make sure everyone sticks to this training. Remind the kids not to let the puppy nip or bite them in play, or this will confuse the puppy. Tell your kids to yelp and stop playing too. Also and this is important, make certain that your puppy is given rewards for good behavior and not for bad.

Give Your Puppy Some Dog Toys

Helping your puppy to stop biting

When you are working on how to teach a puppy not to bite make sure you give your puppy toys to bite or chew on. If he bites your hand remember to say ouch or yelp. Stay consistent in this. If he backs off let him know this pleases you.

Puppies need lots of attention and love. They also need lots of play time with the right toys.

Puppies like texture. Keep different kinds of toys on hand for your puppy to play with. He will pick his favorite one. Use that one when you are teaching him not to bite.

Important...
Do not give him any of your old shoes or clothes to play with. He has no idea what is new and what is not. This will make him think this means it is OK to chew up all your clothes and your shoes. Puppies can get confused easily. They need to know that your things are not his toys.

It's a natural thing for all puppies to bite and nip at their playmates and it takes a bit of time to unlearn this behavior. No one wants a dog that is aggressive towards people or children so it is worth putting into practice these tips on how to teach a puppy not to bite.
