Teaching Spanish Through Music

One of the things I love about teaching Spanish is that you really get to teach a wide variety of subjects - in Spanish. You can teach about things you love, things that are important in your personal life, or even things you yourself would like to learn more about. Art, music, cars, cooking, reading novels, there are a million topics that make exciting starting points for developing a lesson or activity for your classroom.

Music is one of the most popular ways to add zip to your lessons.

  • There are lots of songs and jingles that help students remember grammar points.
  • You can teach grammar, vocabulary and reading by using song lyrics in Spanish.
  • You can use music to teach literary concepts, such as simile, metaphor, hyperbole, or poetic devices such as rhythm.
  • And you can teach about the music itself as a reflection of the culture.
There are many resources for using music in Spanish 1 and 2 classes. There are far fewer for the intermediate and advanced levels. The following links are the best I have found so far.

Don't forget to sign in the guest book and tell us about some of the creative ways you use music in your classroom. And be sure to check back for new ideas!
