Tower of Cosmic Reflections
I spent a delightful afternoon in this Classical Chinese Garden and Tea House.

"You will be transported to another land in this exquisite tea room, furnished with Ming and Tang Dynasty-style tables and chairs, within Portland's Classical Chinese Garden..."

Built in 2000, The Tower of Cosmic Reflections teahouse is a national landmark located inside the Portland Classical Chinese Garden (a collaborative project between the City of Portland and its sister city in China - Suzhou.), the teahouse is a two storied structure with magnificent views. It includes a patio on the second floor, often regarded as 'the best view in Portland'. The Tower of Cosmic Reflections was named for the view one obtains of the 'cosmos' reflected in 'Zither' lake in front of the teahouse.

The teahouse was built by a team of over 80 artisans, many of them coming from China over the year-long construction project. Immerse yourself in the art of Chinese tea culture.

Historic Tea Houses That I Have Visited

Panama Hotel and Tea House
I spent several nights in this lovely 100 year old Hotel in Seattle's Chinatown. Watch for photos to be posted soon.

The Historic Panama Hotel built in 1910 by Sabro Ozasa, a Japanese Architect, houses the only remaining Japanese Bathhouse (Sento) left in tact in the United States. These Facilities served generations of Seattle's Japanese community until closing its doors in 1950, and has remained preserved as it was to this day.

The Contemporary Tea House

From Publishers Weekly
This vibrant, relevant study from architects Ando, Fujimori and Isozaki looks at the present moment of a centuries-old Japanese tradition, the chashitsu, or "tea room." In first-person narratives, leading Japanese architects discuss their contemporary take on the classic tea ceremony space. Full-color photographs, design sketches and polished plans are clearly laid out along with text, and each chapter focuses on a number of works by a single architect.

Tea house by David Ma%u0161tálka
David Ma%u0161tálka of A1 Architects has collaborated with sculptor Vojtech Bilisic to build a tea house in Prague, Czech Republic.
Open to the surrounding gardens on one side, the small structure has a translucent, domed roof covered with paper.

A world hidden inside, where time flows at its own pace, an vacant space leaving an impression just by its spaciousness. When first reasoning about such a place I thought of the places that had made an impression upon me and came to the decision of building it on a circular platform enclosed by a translucent dome breathing the inner peace of small sacred buildings. Diffused rays of light illuminate the quarters within; the translucent dome resembles the sky and the hearth - the home. The spherical shape directs your attention to the hearth, on which the tea is prepared and creates a close bondage with all who are present.

Hi - Thanks to Pat's recommendations to this site. I'd like to mention, quite a famous Tea Room in my home City of Glasgow in Scotland. It's called 'The Willow Team Room' in Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. Its been around for a long time, wonderful Rennie McIntosh ambience. For those who don't know of him, he was quite famous in his day as a Designer/Artist/Architect, way beyond his years. Very contemporary, I just can't imagine what people must have thought in those days.

an inscription from the website:

The Willow was the only tea room building where Mackintosh had complete control over every aspect of the design. He modelled the exterior as well as the interior of the building and even designed the tea spoons and waitresses' dresses.
The Willow name comes from Sauchiehall, the street where it is situated, which in Scottish Gaelic means alley of the willows and the theme of willows featured throughout the building.
He designed The Glasgow School of Art, plus many others.

From George Washington to Bill Clinton, each president has a story with tea playing a key role.

Presidential tea - A spot in history
Many first families received tea sets as gifts. "A tea set was the proper gift from a foreign diplomat," Sommer said.

After a tea and picnic with Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt in 1939, Prince Olav and Princess Martha of Norway sent an art deco tea set made by David Andersen as a gift, Sommer said.

Way of Tea

The Way to Tea: Your Adventure Guide to San Francisco Tea Culture

Sharing tea has for hundreds of years taken on a variety of expressions by different cultures, but there are also common threads woven into every tea culture. These "threads" include community, ritual, art, poetry, sanctuary, intimacy, and vitality. In my journey through San Francisco tea culture, I discovered that the Bay Area is uniquely situated at the heart of a newly emerging American tea culture, and that we have perhaps the highest concentration of keenly and divergently focused tea professionals in the world right here. In no other place and at no other time could such an alchemy of cultures and traditions merge into such a diverse, fun and intensely inspiring social phenomenon. I felt it was an event worthy of recording and celebrating. The Way to Tea is a creative tribute to and appraisal of an exhilarating journey through the labyrinth of San Francisco tea culture.

The Way to Tea is a colorful, elegant, whimsical invitation to be an honored guest at America's emerging tea culture at its epicenter -- the San Francisco Bay Area. In San Francisco, the love of art, food, community, ideas, and cultural diversity all come together to support a thriving tea culture unsurpassed in depth and diversity by any other. With more than 125 full color images, Author/Photographer Jennifer Sauer evokes the beauty, passion and joy imbued in a broad range of unique tea experiences. If you want to be awed and impressed by an austere Japanese tea ceremony, imbibe in the most elegant of British afternoon teas, compare teas and wits with a Chinese gong fu tea practitioner, or simply explore the nuances of tea and tea culture, this book will take you there. Sauer recounts her memorable experiences, profiles the exceptional "tea people" who helped provide them, and includes a tea glossary that shows readers how experts judge teas.

Dushanbe Teahouse
Boulder, Colo.

"When you enter this soulful Persian teahouse, you will feel blessed by the people of Dushanbe, Tajikistan, who lovingly crafted it in Dushanbe and shipped it to the Rocky Mountains," Sauer says. "This handcrafted, colorful and whimsical artistic masterpiece, with its painted ceilings, ceramic panels, copper sculptures and hand-carved plaster panels, took more than two years to create. The exotic and eclectic menu complements the architecture. You'll find teas from all over Asia, including some limited-edition rare teas." 303-442-4993

Tea & Sympathy

Tea & Sympathy
New York City

"Thank goodness the Brits didn't completely give up on America after the tea party scuffle. Otherwise, we might not have this endearing tea room in Greenwich Village," Sauer says. "British memorabilia, including several vintage photos of the queen, cover the walls. Besides great scones, cakes and English tea, they serve excellent bangers and mash, shepherd's pie and pasties. Join the wistful Brits and Anglophiles for some fun, tea and sympathy." 212-989-9735;

Tea & Sympathy

Tea and Sympathy

In 1990 Nicola Perry, former tea lady at the London Stock Exchange, started living her dream. She found a storefront and opened Tea & Sympathy, an authentic amalgamation of English tea shop, mum's kitchen, and working man's café right in the heart of New York. Anita Naughton was one of her first waitresses, and from day one she kept an anecdotal record of the place, encapsulating the charm, flavor, and enigmatic patrons that are the atmosphere of the restaurant.

Together they have created a colorful biography spanning the first decade of this landmark eatery: from the early days, when they kept their meager profits in a teapot, to nowadays, when they keep celebrities (British, American, or otherwise) waiting for a table along with everyone else. Complete with sixty recipes and photographs of food and popular visitors, this is a quintessential taste of England ready to take home.

In its original incarnation, Manhattan's Tea & Sympathy was a hole-in-the-wall outpost for British food and drink, authentic down to its steak and Guinness pie and bracing quantities of "cuppa." The place took off, attracting local and visiting celebrities as well as neighborhood regulars. Tea & Sympathy presents more than 60 recipes from the teashop, provided by its owner Nicola Perry, as well as a house chronicle, the work of ex-T&S waitress Anita Naughton. Though the recipes offer exemplary, easily done versions of such fare as bubble and squeak, kedgeree, and sticky toffee pudding, it's Naughton's saucy day-in-the-life narrative that makes the book a should-read. Whether relaying customer eccentricity ("Please help me get fat, only I don't have any money," wails a soon-to-be regular), general staff randiness (seeing a repairman lying captivatingly beneath a cappuccino machine, waitress Carol offers, "It might be easier if you take your trousers off"), celebrity sightings ("I carried the Dalai Lama's afternoon tea," says the author breathlessly), or the seat-of-the-pants business of the daily round ("Hangovers are now banned," posts owner Nicky in a staff memo to which one waitress replies, "Are you going to put it in the menu?"), Naughton's narrative is both hilarious and poignant, in ways that often catch the reader by surprise. Ultimately, she writes of being young and alone and trying to find a foothold in the big city, but she also offers "a happy ending"--her marriage to the restaurant's chef, "the sixth [one of us] so far" to have found and wedded a mate on the premises. With a detailed tea discussion and "family photo album" of almost the entire cast of characters, the book is a special culinary-literary spread, one that's in some ways even choicer than a Tea & Sympathy visit itself. --Arthur Boehm

Samovar Tea Lounge
San Francisco

The Bay Area's favorite tea house featuring organic, fair trade tea, and tea service. "A good deal can be learned here about tea and tea cultures from around the world while enjoying premium teas and culturally diverse meals. They offer myriad expressions of tea within a stunning environment that is simultaneously rustic and contemporary," Sauer says. "Check out their outdoor seating, which puts you in the catbird seat for San Francisco's chic fine arts district. You will wish they offered sleepovers." 415-227-9400

The Tea Room
Savannah, Ga.

"Savannah's charm, soulfulness and Southern whimsy all come together here to create a uniquely inviting atmosphere. The Arts and Crafts feel of this tearoom offers a distinctive simplicity and elegance," Sauer says. "The afternoon tea spread includes lemon chiffon pie (made fresh from the lemons of a favorite customer's tree). The lapsang souchong-infused chicken salad sandwich will leave you speechless. There are three good words to describe afternoon tea at The Tea Room: Yum, yum, yum." 912-239-9690;

Ching Ching Cha
Washington, D.C.

"It's a surreal and marvelous experience to find an exotic, classical Chinese tea room in the midst of historic Georgetown," Sauer says. "You can sit on the floor on silk pillows around a low table where a ceramic pot sits over a candle for brewing their outstanding tea. This peaceful haven, with high ceilings and skylights, eases you into a delicious rest from daily toil." 202-333-8288

Sawa Tea Lounge & Gallery
Vancouver, B.C., Canada

"A large cast-iron teapot hangs from an antique wooden lever as if over a country hearth above a large octagonal table here," Sauer says. "The large table inspires the meeting of new friends over a bowl of Japanese matcha tea or a Japanese lunch. Handmade textiles crafted by owner Ruriko Shimomae add a touch of soulfulness and beauty - two hallmarks of a great tea room." 604-733-7900

The Dunbar Tea Shop
Sandwich, Mass.

"Sandwich is a beautiful little village on Cape Cod," Sauer says. Which means this former carriage house, with knotty pine paneling, fireplace and garden, resembles a British tea room - and is not far from where the more famous (or infamous) tea party took place. Everything is homemade, and there's a huge selection of desserts, including the signature "Bumbleberry Pie," made with blackberries, blueberries and raspberries and loads of whipped cream. Afternoon tea, as well as shepherd's pie and other big, hearty dishes, is served here. 508-833-2485

TeaGschwendner on Halstead St.
Chicago

Many items on the menu at this sleek, modern shop and bistro are made with tea (the rosebud blossom crème brûlée, for example, is infused with tea). Monthly tasting dinners, where five courses are paired with five teas, are also offered. "Guests are welcome to linger with a pot of tea here and never feel rushed," Sauer says. 773-525-0671

Tower of Cosmic Reflections
Portland, Ore.

"You will be transported to another land in this exquisite tea room, furnished with Ming and Tang Dynasty-style tables and chairs, within Portland's Classical Chinese Garden," Sauer says. "They offer teas from all over Asia. I loved the old-growth pu-erh teas, harvested from ancient tea trees in southern China. The tea servers are extremely knowledgeable about tea." 503-224-8455

Floating Leaves
Seattle

"Floating Leaves is the perfect name for this serene yet enlivening tea room in Seattle's Ballard district. Native Taiwanese owner Shiuwen Tai brews a fabulous oolong and is eagerly engaged in the community, offering tea events and education. You will feel like you just floated into a familiar yet exotic tea salon that harkens back to old Asian traditions. It is simultaneously invigorating and relaxing, just like a good cup of tea," Sauer says. 206-529-4268

Tea & Marriage

The reverence devoted to tea, in the East, is perhaps difficult for the West to understand.

Early on in the consumption of tea in China it was an integral part of marriage ceremonies. Actually, the ancient Chinese character for tea also represents an herbal product called "sow thistle." This "sow thistle," when infused in hot water, produced a very bitter beverage which was then served to the bride and groom prior to their marriage and served to point out to them how bitter and unpleasant life was without a partner to share it with.

After the marriage ceremony, they were both served a cup of light, sweet green tea which symbolized how pleasant life was with a partner to share it with.
