Education Outside The Classroom Can Foster Great Team Building For Kids

Recently I was looking for the ideal education outside of the classroom program for preteens and teenagers. The goals would be to foster team building for kids through problem solving and managing risk taking. These are the types of activities that increase confidence, self esteem and enhance self image. My friend and I came up with lots of ideas, but we know there are plenty of great ideas which we missed.

So, I had an idea to use this webpage as a team building exercise of sorts. Let's see if together we can build a list of great education outside of the classroom activities that encourage team building for kids. What are you waiting for, lets get started:

List of Land Based Activities to Foster Team Building for Kids:

Passing a Group Over An Obstacle

I am sure there is a name for this, I just can't remember. The idea is find an obstacle which is taller than the hips of the tallest person on the team (so no one can step over it.) The team must work together to move everyone from one side to the other. If no natural obstacle is available two people can carefully hold a bar - but the participants must all go OVER.2 points

Geocaching - A 21st Century Treasure Hunt

A great activity if you have a handheld GPS. It is described at Geocahing.com1 point

Obstacle Course

Natural obstacles are great - climbing over large rocks, leaping over streams, crawling under secure fallen trees, traversing a rock face (ok, this might be a bit extreme, but you get the idea).1 point

Fun Competitive Games

Three legged race, relay race, egg toss, egg on a spoon races1 point

Blindfolded Trust Walks

1 point

Orienteering and compass walk

Either following a map or using a set of compass directions to end up at a giving location.1 point

List of Beach Based Activities to Foster Team Building for Kids:

Beach Flags

Played like they do at Surf Lifesaving.2 points

Build a Sand-City

Not just the traditional sand-castle. With roads, houses, stores, school for little crabs, etc.2 points

Team Raft Building

Teams of two or three build rafts of bamboo or driftwood and rope. Don't forget to add some type of flotation devices on each side. These can be air-filled or Styrofoam. Use paddles to race the rafts.1 point

Team "Yacht" Building

I did this with teams of 4-6 people. We were given a large rectangle of Styrofoam (200mmx200mmx1M), a strong stick, a plastic rubbish bag (for the sail) and some string. We were also given utility knives and hack saws to shape the styrofoam. We had one hour to design and build a sailing vessel. These were then raced to a finish line selected by wind direction. Each team was allowed one person in the water to launch and retrieve, but not steer the vessel.1 point

Rowing or Two Man Sailing Dinghy Races

Obviously this requires the appropriate boats for the event1 point

Treasure Hunt

Either pre-planned with a treasure map, or split participants into two groups. Each group is given a clipboard, paper, pencils and a "treasure." Each is sent off in a different direction with a time limit and a supervisor. The groups plan, bury the treasure and draw a map including at least three landmarkings. Then the other team had to find the treasure. It was not a race, but rather a cooperation activity.1 point

Not Expensive, But Essential - That's My View of a Dry Bag

I need somewhere to keep my towel, phone and other gear I don't want wet!

I love my Coleman dry bag, as it does exactly what it says, keeps everything dry. Dry bags come in all sizes and colors. I really like this one as you can see through it a bit, to make it easier to find what you are looking for, often with hands (for me, I am most often looking for a towel.) I pictured the large one here as we are looking at group activities, so you may be storing a few extra items.

This review by K. Rochester of Michigan mirrors my views:
"I bought 2 of these bags for a winter canoe trip. They will get used year around now. For the price and size of this bag there is not a better deal anywhere."
