The Teapot Dragon
by Rupert Sargent Holland
There's a dragon on our teapot,
With a long and crinkly tail,
His claws are like a pincer-bug,
His wings are like a sail.
His tongue is always sticking out,
And so I used to think
He must be very hungry, or
He wanted tea to drink.
But once when Mother wasn't round
I dipped my fingers in,
And when I pulled them out I found
I'd blistered all the skin.
Now when I see the dragon crawl
Around our china pot,
I know he's burned his tongue because
The water is so hot.

Teapot Dragon Words
Learn to Read with the Teapot Dragon

The Teapot Dragon can help the children learn vocabulary or sight words. Write words that they are learning on teabags. Put them in the Teapot. The children pretend to be Dragons and pull out the teabags and read the words. Put in only about 5 teabags at a time and change the words regularly.
Variation: Each child pulls a teabag out of the teapot and puts it in their teacup. After each one has had a turn they take turns reading the kind of tea they are drinking ie: read the word on their teabag.
If you find that the teabags are getting too tangled, try writing the words on tea leaves. They will last even longer if they are laminated.
I'm a Little Teapot
Dance and Sing with the Teapot Dragon

I'm a little teapot, short and stout
Here is my handle [one hand on hip], here is my spout [other arm out straight]
When I get all steamed up, hear me shout
Just tip me over and pour me out!
[as song ends, lean over and tip arm out like a spout]
I'm a clever teapot, yes it's true
Here's an example of what I can do
I can change my handle to my spout [switch arm positions and repeat tipping motion]
Just tip me over and pour me out.

Teapot Dragon Literacy Bag
Teapot Dragon Book Buddies

Start with a fictional book, a non-fiction book, a plush dragon and a teapot. Now put them all in the Literacy Bags with a journal to record the dragon's adventures. Take home literacy bags take the place of homework. Children read the stories with their families and choose a couple of activities to do that are related to the poem of the Teapot Dragon. The suggested activities should relate to skills that have already been taught to the children.
As they read about dragons and interact with the items in the bag, the children write in the journal about the Teapot Dragon's adventures in the Teapot Dragon Journal.
Once back to school the children get to share their activities and when another child takes out this literacy bag, he or she will get to read all of the adventures that the Teapot Dragon had while visiting the other children's homes.
Children will be begging to take home their homework.
