TR & The Teddy Bear - PART 1
A True Story
Did you know that teddy bear collectors are known as arctophiles from the Greek words ìarctoî (bear) and ìphilosî (lover and that the teddy bear is younger than the electric light, the motor car, and the telephone? Many of us have loved a teddy bear at some point in our lives. And itís likely that we've even had more than one very special "teddy" in our lives.
However, did you ever here the real story of how the teddy bear sprang into our hearts?
A Hunting We Will Go
Well, it seems that 105 years ago, in November of 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt, went on a bear hunt into the swamps of Mississippi. He enjoyed nature and being out in the woods where animals lived. Because he was the President of the United States, the people organizing the hunt wanted to make sure the hunt was successful.
But after 3 days of walking and climbing and riding, no bears were found. Now what? The President's bear hunt would be a failure!
So, the next day the hunting guide, Holt Collier, and his hunting dogs finally found an old bear. The dogs and guide followed the 235-pound bear for quite a distance until the bear was very, very tired. The dogs attacked and injured the old bear. The guides tied the bear to a tree and called for the President. Here was a bear for him to shoot!
Don't Shoot!
President Roosevelt looked at the poor old bear and said "No, I wouldnít be able to look my boys in the face again! Spare the bear! I will not shoot a tethered animal!" No one would shoot this old bear for sport. That would not be right. However, the bear was injured and suffering. President Roosevelt ordered that the bear be put down to end its pain.
But the story doesnít end there, as reporters with the hunting party spread the news of Rooseveltís fair play nationwide.

TR & The Teddy Bear -- PART 2
Continuation Of A True Story
...continued from PART 2 aboveDrawing The Line
A political cartoonist by the name of Clifford Berryman, who was a staff artist for the Washington Post, heard this story and, of course, since a political cartoonist draws about current events in the news, on the following day Mr. Berryman drew a cartoon showing how President Roosevelt refused to shoot the bear while hunting in Mississippi. Written across the lower part of the cartoon were the words ìDrawing the Line in Mississippi,î which coupled the hunting incident to a political dispute.
Teddy's Bear
The cartoon was reprinted in newspapers all over the country and Roosevelt's popularity soared. So for the remainder of his political career, Teddy Roosevelt and a mascot named "Teddy's Bear."
It seems that among the many readers who saw the Berryman cartoon was a Russian immigrant by the name of Morris Michtom. The owner of a small novelty store in Brooklyn, New York, Michtom had his wife make 2 toy bears that had movable limbs. Unlike toy bears available at the time, these little bears were made from plush stuffed excelsior and finished with black shoe button eyes.
The Michtom's new bear was sweet and cuddly. They sold quickly, so they made others, and received permission from T.R. to use the Roosevelt's name in connection with the little bear.
Called "Teddy's Bears", these little stuffed bears were a great success, allowing Michtom to move his business to a loft, under the name of the Ideal Novelty and Toy Corporation, the first teddy bear manufacturer in the United States. It remained a successful business and in 1938 changed its name to the Ideal Toy Company.
The most popular plush toy -- and possibly the most popular of all toys -- the teddy bear has withstood the test of time.

The History Of The Teddy Bear
Excelling in sewing and needlework, she became the proud owner of the first sewing machine in Giengen and started a dressmaking business. She came across a pattern for a toy elephant in a magazine and started make these as gifts for her family and friends, developing other animal patterns.
Coming To America
In 1892 she began making the little bears that later were referred to as teddy bears. Although bears had been the subject for children's pull toys for some years, the Steiff bear did not capture the hearts and imaginations of Europeans. However, an American buyer for a New York department store happened upon the Steiff booth at the Leipzig trade show in March 1903, and to the utter amazement of Margaret Steiff, ordered 3,000 bears!
Teddy's Bears
The buyer was aware of President Roosevelt's 1902 unsuccessful bear hunting trip. The President failed to make a kill so his hosts caught and tethered a bear, presenting it to the President as a sitting target. Naturally the President refused, uttering the immortal words, "Spare the bear! I will not shoot a tethered animal." When invited to shoot the captive, Roosevelt refused, disdaining such unsportsmanlike conduct.
However, if it had not been for two Russian immigrants Morris and Rose Michtom, who began to make a jointed stuffed bear, this first order of Steiff bears would not have been marketed as teddy bears. Picking up on the popularity of the bear cub in Berrymanís cartoons, the Michtoms struck upon the idea of calling their creation a teddy bear. One of their stuffed bear toys, and a letter asking permission to use the President's name was sent to the White House.
And how did President Roosevelt react to the incredible popularity of the teddy bear? Let it suffice to say that the popular song "The Teddy Bearsí Picnic" was used as a theme song during Roosevelt's subsequent election campaign!
To this day, Steiff teddy bears continue to leave their marks in the hearts of collectors and teddy bears lovers alike.
