Angst, Love, Angst, and more Love. And some "coming of age".
If you haven't seen a John Hughes film, you are really missing out. The teen movies in the 1980's were awesome (some would say "awesomely bad", but that isn't what this lens is about!), and they were prolific. Thanks to John Hughes, the brat pack, and other teen actors in the 80's, being "preppy" never was so stylish.
If you'd like to take a stroll down memory lane (for those of us who grew up in the 80's) or if you are wondering why your mom can't get enough of the show "Dead Zone" with Anthony Michael Hall, please enjoy this lens!
Sixteen Candles
Sixteen Candles, starring Molly Ringwold, Michael Schoeffling, Anthony Michael Hall
Sixteen Candles (High School Reunion Collection)
Amazon Price: $15.49 (as of 01/06/2010)![]()
A teen girl has a crush on the most popular boy in school, and the geekiest boy in school has a crush on her. Her sixteenth birthday is approaching but is forgotten because of her older sister's wedding. A comedy of teen angst and embarrassment, this film is the epitome of the eighties! (1984)
The Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club, starring Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estavez, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy
The Breakfast Club (High School Reunion Collection)
Amazon Price: $17.99 (as of 01/06/2010)![]()
Five teens from different cliques meet in detention where they get to know each other and discover that they have a lot more in common with each other than they thought. (1985)
Pretty in Pink (1986)
Pretty in Pink, starring Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy, Jon Crier, James Spader
Pretty in Pink (Everything's Duckie Edition)
Amazon Price: $10.99 (as of 01/05/2010)![]()
Poor new-waver Andie Walsh (Ringwald) has a crush on rich preppie Blane McDonough (McCarthy), but best friend Duckie (Cryer), also a new-waver, has a crush on her and is jealous of her dating Blane.
The entire movie is focused on the differences between the social circles of the two, how their friends try to spoil the relationship, and how Blane is a little too wimpy for most of the movie to stand up for Andie to his "richie" friends.
In the end, Blane proves himself to be different from his friends but... well, nevermind. Watch the movie for yourself!
St. Elmo's Fire
St. Elmo's Fire, starring Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Emilio Estavez, Andrew McCarthy, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Mare Winningham
St. Elmo's Fire
Amazon Price: $12.49 (as of 01/06/2010)![]()
St. Elmo's Fire was not the best "brat pack" film, but it featured the most castmembers from the brat pack, excluding only Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall.
The movie centers around a group of friends who recently graduated from Georgetown University and are struggling to leave behind their youth and become responsible adults. The group deals with broken relationships, trepidation about career moves, and trying to move ahead in life.
Again, not the best film , but a must see if you love the eighties and haven't seen it yet.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off, starring Matthew Broderick, Jennifer Grey, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara
Ferris Bueller's Day Off Bueller...Bueller... Edition (Special Collector's Edition)
Amazon Price: $8.99 (as of 01/06/2010)![]()
I grew up in the Chicago area in the 80's, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off is my all time favorite!
Ferris Bueller (Broderick) is a Chicago area high school senior who decides to take a day off of school by calling in sick. He convinces his girlfriend (Sara) and his best friend (Ruck) to skip school with him, and the trio embark on an adventure in Chicago. They have fun as they try to avoid Bueller's parents and maintain the facade that he is sick.
Meanwhile, Bueller's sister (Grey) and the high school principal are trying to catch him in the act (of truancy), and hilarity ensues.

Footloose, starring Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest, Sarah Jessica Parker
Footloose (Special Collector's Edition)
Amazon Price: $12.49 (as of 01/06/2010)![]()
In Footloose, Kevin Bacon plays a city kid who moves to a small town where dancing and rock music is banned. He falls for the preacher's daughter, who is quite a "bad girl". The teens want to have a Senior Prom, but they have to work against the town rules and the outspoken preacher (John Lithgow). Who knew Kevin Bacon could dance?
