The History of Tees for Dogs

I wasn't sure that dog clothes actually had a history to them until I started researching the topic and was pleasantly surprised to find that there was more information than I expected. The History of dog clothes starts around 520 B.C when medieval men going to battle would dress their horses and war dogs in garments to protect the animals skin in the time of war. This is what led to the manufacturing of dog apparel and modern day clothing for dogs. Today we carry on the tradition of using apparel to protect our working dogs and pets.
What would happen to Police K9's who didn't wear their bullet proof vests? Or our beloved Service Dogs who guide the blind and wear their vests as helpful signs to let the public know they are doing their job?
Some of our small dogs and pets of today need an extra layer in the cold winter months. For example: The Chinese Crested a Hairless Dog Breed, appreciates the warmth and comfort of modern dog apparel. There are many forms of dog clothes including Doggy Raincoats, Knitted Sweaters, Costumes for Holidays, Comfortable Harnesses for dogs who can't wear collars and soft Cotton Dog T-shirts for any breed to either amuse their owners and guests with their funny designs or warn the public not to feed a working therapy dog.
In owning a Therapy Dog, I have discovered that patients in hospitals and nursing home residents all seem to light up with joy when my dog is either wearing a silly costume or wearing a funny hat. Hats have become a popular accessory to dog clothes and are used in therapy work to lift the spirit of the patient. After all, what is the purpose of therapy work if you can't make a difference in someone's life and change their mood to help them heal!
For whatever reason you dress your dog, dog clothes started out with a purpose and have a long tradition of protecting the canine from harm. So don't feel silly if you have a seperate closet of doggie apparel for your pooch. It is a necessary tradition!

Before Buying a Dog T-Shirt, Make sure you order the right size and here's how.

HENNA is now 135lbs. She is a Therapy Dog and Canine Good Citizen. When Henna was just a wee pup, she fit into my comfortable doggie t-shirts. But as she grew and grew and grew, my dog t-shirts wouldn't fit her anymore and we were both upset! In being a Therapy Dog, Henna would only benefit from wearing a custom dog tee with a unique therapy dog design for people to be aware that she is a serious working dog. Because of this problem, I have taken it upon myself to send CAFEPRESS a letter to seriously think about buying dog tees that were larger than 2X. They said they would work on the issue and get back to me and as soon as I know the answer to my giant dog t-shirt issue, I will post the new info on this lens ASAP. I also found out that for giant breeds such as the Bullmastiff, Great Pyrenees, Saint Bernard, Great Dane and other Xtra large breeds, My Women's Tank Top in my cafepress shop fits most XTRA LARGE and GIANT BREEDS. So our Gentle Giants still have a choice to wear cool designs. If you would like to order a CUSTOM DESIGN for a giant dog, send me a shout!
Dog T-Shirt Fit Guide
SMALL up to 10 lbs._____MEDIUM 12-25 lbs.
LARGE 26-40 lbs.__XL 41-60 lbs.__XXL 61-80 lbs.
Measuring Instructions:
Full Body Length: Measuring should be done along the dog's backbone from the base of the head to the base of the tail.
Neck Opening: Use your dog's collar measurement.
Sleeve Length: Measure your dog's arm length from the elbow down.
Chest Measurement: Measure the chest at its biggest part, right behind the front legs. If the dog has a large girth, go up one size.
EXAMPLE: My Pug Hubble is 30 Pounds and his dog t-shirt size is a LARGE because he is a bit on the round side!

Tees for Dogs-Matching Hats
Pretty Floral Wreath Hat for Dogs
These simple-to-make floral wreaths bring out the medieval grace and elegance of your greygirl. They're flashy yet tasteful and stay on the head well. We know--we've tested them. If you want to participate in costume contests, but don't want your hound to look goofy. These are a nice choice.
Materials Needed:
4-inch grapevine wreath (or make your own out of any viney plant)
Bit of spanish moss
10 or more feet of thin satin ribbon (use one color or several)
8-12 small satin roses in coordinating colors
11-inch piece of ¼ inch elastic
Instructions:
Attach the 11-inch piece of elastic to the bottom of the wreath to form a chin strap. I usually hand-sew this on, but hot glue would also work.
Cut 6-8 18-inch pieces of satin ribbon and tie them to one strand in the wreath. Make the knot be in the middle of the length of ribbon, forming two ribbon streamers out of each piece. I concentrate them on the bottom of the wreath on the side that will be the part of the wreath nearest the neck of the hound.
Hot glue the spanish moss to the top of the wreath. Glue it really well to hold up to the head-shaking and such.
Take a 2-foot piece of satin ribbon. Hot glue one end to the wreath in an inconspicuous place. Gently and loosely wrap the ribbon around the wreath 5-7 times. You should end up where you started. Hot glue this and trim any excess ribbon.
Hot glue satin ribbons into place.

A perfect hat for a night out on the town...LUCKY DOG!
You can make these fun hats out of any fabric. A very nice distinguished yet playful look for your Pooch.Materials Needed:
¼ yard of fabric - tweeds and plaid wools work best
5-inch circle of posterboard or thin cardboard
11-inch piece of ¼ elastic
Instructions:
Cut one 11-inch circle of fabric and two 5 ½-inch circles of fabric.
Cut a 5-inch circle of posterboard or thin cardboard.
Use a 1-inch basting to hand-baste ½ inch from the edge of the 11-inch circle. When all the way around the circle, pull the threads to draw the circle as tightly together as possible. (This will form a bag-like item. Be sure the right side of the fabric is out.) Tie the threads to secure the circle.
Place right sides together on the 5 ½-inch fabric circles and sew with a ¼-inch seam allowance around the entire circle. Clip curves.
Carefully cut an X in one of the fabric circles and turn the circles right-side out. Iron flat.
Carefully squish and squeeze the posterboard into the circle just made. Don't worry if the posterboard bends--it's okay.
Top-stitch ¼ inch from the edge. That's right, sew through the posterboard and the layers of fabric. This is now the brim of your hat.
Attach the brim to the first circle. Be sure to put the side of the brim with the X cut in it to the side of the big circle with the gathers. You may want to slightly offset the brim circle from the large circle so the brim sticks out slightly. You can hot glue these together or hand-stitch them.
Attach the elastic to the brim to form a chin strap. The hat will lay best if you attach the elastic about 1 inch in from the edge of the hat on each side. You can hot glue this or sew it.
