Signs and Causes of Teeth Grinding and TMJ

Teeth grinding, or Bruxism to give it it's medical term, is typically accompanied by the clenching of the jaw. It occurs in most people during some time in their lives and is not usually serious enough not to be a health problem. One in 4 people will suffer a more significant case of teeth grinding that will require treatment to relieve the symptoms.

Bruxism can take place during the daytime or during sleep. It can be a problem for the partner of the sufferer as the noise can interupt sleep. Nocturnal bruxism causes the majority of health issues and is one of the most common sleep disorders. Teeth during sleep is a problem for some 40 Million Americans. The good news is there are many cures and treatments for the condition and it isn't usually great cause for concern.
Bruxism is usually caused by the activation of reflex chewing activity. It is not a habit one learns. Chewing is a complex muscle activity that controlled by reflex nerves having higher control by the brain. When the sufferer sleeps, the reflex part is active and the higher control is inactive resulting in teeth grinding.
Bruxism can result in abnormal wear patterns of the occlusal surface, abfractions and fractures in the teeth. This type of damage is categorised as a sign of occlusal trauma.
Over a period of months damage to the teeth will usually occur. Bruxism is a major cause of tooth loss and gum recession.

Stop Teeth Grinding and Cure Bruxism

There are many tried and tested treatments for teeth grinding - many of them fail and are not suitable for everyone.
The system outlined in Charles Harrison's groundbreaking book 'Cure For Bruxism' has for me been life changing.

The method Charles describes has been a cloely guarded secret with Dentists and if like me you've tried other treatments for teeth grinding without success I urge you to review this information.

I hadn't realised how severe a problem teeth grinding could be. If you have Bruxism and you let it go un-treated for many years then the results can be irreversible. In a bad case you could grind through the enamel on your teeth and expose the dentine.

The enamel on your teeth is like a shield protecting your teeth. Without this your teeth are un-protected and problems can escalate. Without the enamel on your teeth they are very sensitive to things like hot and cold. Dentine is also softer than the enamel, so if you continue to grind your teeth they will become worn even more quickly.

Mouth Guards for Treatment of Teeth Grinding

The use of night mouth guards can be very effective for bruxism sufferers. Guards can protect the surface of your teeth ensuring you maintain a good smile all the time in addition to the medical benefits. Bruxism can damage dentures in severe cases and tooth chips can reduce confidence and the desire to smile so don't just accept it and suffer!

Mouth guards for teeth grinding can be either the over the counter variety or made to measure. The latter are of course more expensive.

Using night mouth guards can reduce headaches and jaw pains. Night mouth guards will also ensure you have a long and restful sleep night after night.
