Not only will you learn important "secrets" to finding and getting a work-at-home job, but you'll also get U.S. and international telework associations and resources, links to my favorite resources for finding jobs, learn how to write a work-at-home proposal, and more.

So who am I to be sharing all this information? My name is Leslie Truex, aka The Pajama Mama. I have been telecommuting for over 10 years and have been providing telecommuting information and job resources for nearly as long at my website Work At Home Success. My book, The work At Home Success Bible will be published by Adams Media in February 2009.

Telecommuting Success Secrets

Secret #1

Successful telecommuters don't stuff envelopes, assemble crafts, process payments, post ads, or fill out surveys. These programs are all scams or simply don't make enough money to buy a pizza.

Successful telecommuters hold jobs that are similar the jobs found in the traditional work world such as personal assistant (or virtual assistant), bookkeeper, copywriter, tutor, teacher, paralegal, transcriber, and writer ... just to name a few.

Secret #2

Successful telecommuters look to their job first before hitting the Internet to find a work-at-home job. Its is much easier to turn your current job into a telecommuting position than it is to find a telecommuting job. Visit Work-At-Home Success' Telecommuting Resource for details on how to prepare and present a work-at-home proposal.

Secret #3

Successful telecommuters don't use directories or lists of companies to find a telecommuting job. Many of these resources provide scam companies such as assembly or mailing work. Others do provide a list of companies that have telecommuting programs, but for the purpose of finding work, they are useless as the companies my not be hiring. To use a list like this would be like using your phone book yellow pages to find a job. Sure the companies listed have employees, but they may not have a job opening.

Secret #4

Successful telecommuters don't sign up for a job. Neither do they buy one. Work at home jobs must be earned in the same way traditional jobs are; you need to apply, interview and get hired. Any company that says you will have a "job" simply by signing up and sending money is NOT offering you a job.

Secret #5

Successful telecommuters search for work-at-home jobs where jobs are posted: 1) company websites; 2) job websites such as Careerbuilder; or 3) Telecommuting databases.

Secret #6

Successful telecommuters know their skills and experiences, and what jobs they are best suited to do. And they have a professional resume and cover letter at the ready.

Didn't find the job you want above? Here are some of the sites I used to find the jobs listed above. These resources list hundreds of jobs in a variety of categories. Please note, the listings below are NOT jobs (jobs are posted above). These are services that provide work-at-home job announcements. Some are free and others aren't. While you never want to pay a company to hire you, its is okay to invest in a service that can help you find a job. The services below are the ones that I use and know to be reputable.

Telecommuting Job Databases (fee required to access these services)

HomeJobStop has over 100 jobs in clerical, and more in customer service, writing, transcription, miscellaneous plus 100's of others. Very affordable.

VirtualAssistants has 100''s of Secretarial/General jobs plus 100's more in other categories. Little more expensive but offers more jobs.

HomeWorker- Provides many great jobs in a variety of areas including virtual assistance, customer service and more. Very affordable.

How to Avoid Work-At-Home Scams

Special Reminder: You never want to pay money to get hired. Any company that says for a fee you can work for them is selling you something, and its not a job. However, it is acceptable to invest in getting a work-at-home job. For example, its okay to hire a professional resume writer or to pay to access a quality telecommuting database. Any database that says you can assemble crafts, stuff envelops or other scams should be avoided.
