A telephone headset is a relatively recent adaption of the headset discovery. It was Nathanial Baldwin in 1910 that fulfilled the headset concept, but not until the 1940's did he make any money when the U.S. Army bought 100 units so the pilots could hear conversation over the roar of the engines.
As a matter of fact, Plantronics, was founded by two pilots with the objective to provide light , compact units for fliers.
A telephone headset was created to essentially combine an ear piece with a miniature microphone into a single, light unit.
Initially, the unit connected to the phone with an amplifier. When the phone rang, the handset would be lifted up, opening the circuit, and the wearer could both hear through the headset and speak through the mike.
