Insomnia and watching TV

Insomnia is a complicated problem, that spoils the nights of many people. Television may well be one of the reasons you can't fall asleep. But perhaps the TV doesn't cause insomnia at all? Experts aren't in agreement on the subject, so what do YOU think?

Does sleeping with TV on cause insomnia?

Yes, in some people sleeping with the TV on can cause insomnia. The television causes us to make adrenaline, and adrenaline keeps people awake. This means that the relaxed feeling you may have sitting (or slouching) in front of the Television may be an illusion: if you can't sleep well afterwards, turning off the TV an hour or so before you go to bed may well help you fall asleep better.

On the other hand: sleep is a personal experience. Some people fall asleep in front of the TV quite easily.

Alternatives to TV

The television is just about the easiest way to spend the evening. In front of the TV we sit still automatically, don't have anything to do and yet at the same time most of us become engaged with what happens on the screen. Just the movement there is likely to keep us watching.

Turning the TV off is hard for most people. There is something about watching that screen that hypnotizes us or something. But if you are having trouble falling asleep at night, it might be useful to try out alternative ways to spend your evenings.

  • Walking or biking thirty minutes or so after dinner will get your body in shape. It will also give your body reason to be tired and fall asleep. Physical exercise in general gives a rosy, calm feeling that is a great way to relax. Natural highs :) And healthy too.

  • Reading before bed time has a very different effect on the brain than tv does. While tv keeps us engaged, it doesn't help us work through what we did during the day. For some reason reading does allow that. This means that if worries and grinding thoughts are keeping you awake, reading is probably a better way to relax. While reading your mind will start dealing with what happened that day so that by the time you go to bed the worst issues have at least been worked through a bit. This will help you fall asleep.

  • Generally doing relaxing things is good for you: take a bath, do a board game, listen to music. Stare into space for all I care. Especially if you have a very busy life, just taking the time to relax will do you an enormous amount of good. It's just as good as meditation according to research.

TV helps me sleep: I always fall asleep in front of the screen.

aj2008 says:

I do not watch much TV but when I do I often fall asleep in front of it!

I think TV is the reason I have trouble sleeping - or not watching TV helps me fall asleep.

julcal says:

I don't watch TV, i don't find anything worth watching. When I used to watch, it would put me to sleep, but I would get up to go to bed and then find myself staring at the ceiling. I find reading to be a more enjoyable and more effective option.

I don't watch TV at all, but when I used to, it would put me to sleep while I was watching it, but then I would get up and go to bed and i would lie there wide awake. Reading puts me straight to sleep.

As I said in the poll module TV makes me fall asleep but I blame Squidoo for my insomnia. When I wake up my brain gets buzzing with lots of lensmaking ideas and I have even been known to get up at 4 am and make a lens!

This is a great lens. It will be interesting to see how others respond. I'm not surprised to hear you say that TV increases adrenaline because it certainly causes stimulation.

I hope others see this lens and find it helpful.

Reading is the greatest part of my bedtime ritual.

    5* !!!
