Learn more about the world of Temeraire

The Temeraire series of novels by Naomi Novik is composed of His Majestys Dragon (released as Temeraire in the United Kingdom), Throne of Jade, Black Powder War, Empire of Ivory, and Victory of Eagles''. The novels are works of both fantasy and alternate history: they are "a reimagining of the epic events of the Napoleonic Wars with an air force ? an air force of dragons, manned by crews of aviators".

There are many reasons to love Temeraire and this series of books.

First of all, he is a dragon as intelligent (if not more so) than many people, and he approaches the society around him with the innocence of a child and the belief that dragons and people are equals. He quickly forms notions of right and wrong, including the wrongness of slavery, although his concept of duty is largely formed through his association with Lawrence.

Second, his journey through the world of the Napoleonic era includes not just England and continental Europe, but as wide as China and the heart of Africa.

Thirdly, as a Celestial, he is among the rarest and most unique of dragons. Each book ends with a treatise about dragons that read almost as if they were historical documents. The variety of dragons and their abilities is fascinating. I wish there were more pictures than just the ones on the cover of the books.

These Regency period dancers performed at a Temeraire release party for "Victory of Eagles"

Quadrille at Temeraire launch party

A team of regency dancers perform a quadrille at the Explorers Club during the launch party of Victory of Eagles, book 5 in the Temeraire series. Sadly, I missed the very beginning while getting into position with camera, but this has the lion's share of the beautiful dance. They make their own costumes, too! Performers: Susan de Guardiola Irene Urban Marc Hartstein Mary Alice Ladd Racheline Maltese Alan Ahles Marci Morimoto and friend! You can also see Susan de Guardiola's website at http://blank.org/susan/ for more on regency dancing. http://www.temeraire.org
