Temperament Testing Puppies

Temperament testing my puppies has become a valuable tool for me as a dog breeder. If you are a dog breeder, I suggest you consider implementing these ideas into your program. You, and your puppy buyers, will be glad that you did!

Temperament Testing Puppies

There are two main reasons temperament testing puppies should be used.

1. To pick your own puppies out of a litter.
2. To help a potential puppy buyer pick a puppy.

Let's look at these two very important reasons in more depth, shall we?

Reason #1 - Picking Your Own Puppies

I started temperament testing my puppies for selfish reasons; to pick out the best puppies for MYSELF.

As a dog breeder, I needed to know which puppies I would keep back for my own lines; either to breed in the future or to train for show or other competition.

I had to have a proven method to test my puppies for these things. After a few years of perfecting my techniques and studying the meaning of the results, I knew I was on to something. As those pups grew to prove my techniques right, I had the brainstorm for reason number 2...

Reason #2 - Helping Puppy Buyers Pick Out The Right Puppy

Having a breed that was a bit difficult to find in certain areas of the globe, I found myself shipping many of my puppies on airplanes to puppy buyers who never got to meet their puppies or their parents in person.

Being a breeder who prefers to have the new owners pick out their new pups in person, this always distressed me.

I knew from years of experience that the puppy someone would pick out by a photograph, they would not always choose once they came out in person.

I have a breed that looks pretty much the same in coloring, build and coat type. In these situations, let's face it; it's just the cuteness of the photo that is appealing to the potential puppy buyer that finds your ad on the internet and chooses their puppy from that alone.

When the temperament testing is done, they have more information to go on.

You strive to find the best possible homes for your puppies. Ideally these will be matches that will last the lifetime of the puppy. Sometimes that is in excess of 9-15 years!

Don't you also owe it to the puppy to make sure not only that the new owners and the new home are appropriate for your breed but also that the individual match is a good one?

Not only is it a great way to add extra insurance to everyone's future happiness; it also is a fantastic selling point. I have many puppy buyers that say the temperament testing I do was in it's self, the single most important reason for them choosing me over other breeders when searching for a puppy.

I also charge more for my puppies than the majority of those in my breed. It's not just because mine are bred so well and will be shown. Nearly all my puppies are placed in puppy homes. Most of those folks don't care about such things; but let me tell you, the temperament testing is a biggie!

They can feel more confident buying from you. Trusting a stranger with something important to you is very difficult. It becomes especially difficult when you're talking about choices made over the internet.

By temperament testing your puppies, you add instant reliability to your ethics.

So, while temperament testing puppies is of great importance to you in picking out your own puppies, the focus of this report will be that of helping your potential puppy buyers to pick out suitable matches for them.
