The Knights Templar

The Knights Templar began as a religious order

and then the Templars became an order of Warrior Monks guarding pilgrims to Jerusalem.

They later developed into a huge trading and banking organisation controlling most ports and shipping traffic in the Mediterranean.

It was because of their power in controlling medieval  shipping and trade that eventually they were destroyed by the King of France (who also owed them money !).

They were widely rumoured to have discovered the Holy Grail or alternatively The Ark of The Covenant under Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem.

After occupying Jerusalem they excavated the Temple of Solomon and showed their finds to The Pope - as a result of this find they became immensely rich and powerful.

The Da Vinci Code writes of an alternative theory (that the Holy Grail is in fact a person - the descendant of Jesus Christ).

Knights Templar were also a mystical order and this has lead to much confusion with many secret societies claiming direct descent from the Knights Templar. These include the Illuminati (which many people believe to be a secret group of politicians and businessmen that actually rule the world)

There are certainly connections of some kind with Rennes-le-Chateau and the Priory de Sion and also the Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland. There's a cave at Royston in Hertfordshire with a carving of Two Knights on one Horse - a notable Templar Symbol. It also has many mystical, pagan and other occult symbols in a most unusual pace.
Near Hereford is an almost complete and charming Commandery set in a remote area on top of a hill in an idyllic location. I discovered the same symbols on a Hindu Temple near Jaipur in India - did the Templars travel this far after their persecution ?
Why not ?
The symbol has been interpreted as - we don't leave our brothers behind - a common military concept.

The Templars lent money to many businesses, countries and even to Kings. The King of France was in financial difficulties and decided not to repay the money he had borrowed from them and instead he had the majority of Templars tortured and Killed.

Some escaped and set up fortress monasteries in places like Tomar in Portugal (which has an incredibly beautiful Chapel) . There are Templar remains all over Britain ,France and Ireland. The Teutonic Knights an order similar to the Templars also existed and was founded on similar principles.

There are Templar buildings all over Europe and the Middle East - notably fabulous Castles at Krak de Chevalier and Accre.  These were real fortresses and many battles were fought over them.

Baphomet

Satan or .....

One of the things that the French King accused th Templars of was of worshipping Satan - or at least of worshipping an idol with a Goat's head... well there was an unusual head on a fresco in a Templar Commandery in Southern England - but it's my belief that the Templars picked up occult knowledge from the Arabic Libraries in several of the countries they took in their Crusades and that some Templars indeed used this knowledge - but of course there's no proof of what they were actually doing ! There is a religious significance to the goat's head in the Goat of Mendes but that's a bit deep for this lens !
Jacques de Molay confessed to idolatry but then who wouldn't when strapped to a rack and tortured for several days without any hope of salvation.
The Knights Templar were amazing fighters and were greatly feared by their Moorish rivals - one Templar held a mountain pass against 300 Moors !
It's rumoured that some scret societies still practice the rituals of the Knights Templar and indeed some of the Freemason's rituals definitely go back to Templar times (if not earlier).
These include rituals using skulls and bones (notably in some American Masonic Orders) - the main principle being to show new entrants their path through life to death.
It's very complicated and often confusing and has been made so by generations of secret societies who have spread rumours and disinformation widely to either hide or enhance their own particular order!.
Many famous people have been alleged to be Freemasons for instance - a full list is in Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code (although the origins of even that list have been queried by some authors) and they include George Washington and Leonardo da Vinci.
It has been pointed out that Leonardo's Man pictured above bears a remarkable similarity to the Baphomet head which is encapsulated within a five pointed star or Pentagram - an ancient protective symbol.

Bornholm Denmark - Templar Sanctuary ?

The Templars Secret Island Book by Henry Lincoln and Erling Haagensen made several theories about the Templars on this Danish Island.
It's certainly true that there are a number of Round Churches (Templar Churches were sometimes round) and that a number of rather mysterious and Templarish carved stones and tombstones remain over the island (now a popular Holiday Island).
A hexagonal layout of the four round churches has lead to a theory that these were used in a power gathering way - the Templars certainly had much occult knowledge as well as their undoubted fighting skills.
As part of their stronghold on the numerous ports and harbours throughout Europe, Bornholm certainly would fit the pattern of an island from which they could have controlled an area of sea . Control of ports and harbours was a highly prized part of the Templars business empire since all ships had to pay a tax on cargo entering the ports - when multipied by the number of ports and harbours this explains the Templars wealth (and opposition by among others, The Doge of Venice and The Pope)
