Innovator. Author. Activest. Autistic.
If you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend watching it, whether you know someone with autism or not. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, but most of all it will inspire you to use your own gifts and face challenges in a whole new way, knowing that nothing is impossible if you persevere.
How I Found Out About Temple Grandin
This one's for you, mom!
She was dressed in pretty wild western outfit, her hair was styled short in curls and she was awkward, but confident in an unusual way. It was clear that she saw things differently than most people do and could easily be mistaken for someone who was slow with little knowledge or understanding of the world.
The movie begins as Temple prepares to open a new door in her life and attend college, something she does not understand or have an interest in as she spends the summer with her aunt on a cattle ranch. We follow her journey as she faces challenges and finds her own unique way of dealing with her autism in a time when little was known about it. The recommended treatment was institutionalization. Temple's mother refused to accept this option and was determined to make Temple persevere against all odds. She stressed that Temple was "different, not less".

Based on the writings by its title subject, HBO Films' Temple Grandin is an engaging portrait of an autistic young woman who became, through timely mentoring and sheer force of will, one of America's most remarkable success stories. With a tour de force performance by Claire Danes in the title role, the film chronicles Grandin's early beginnings as a child diagnosed with autism; her turbulent growth and development during her school years; and the enduring support she received from her mother, her aunt and her science teacher. Against all odds, Temple eventually transitioned into a highly-functional, esteemed inventor in the cattle industry, which she revolutionized with her scientific research and designs. This visually inventive film offers stunning insights into Grandin's world, taking the audience inside her mind with a series of snapshot images that trace her self-perceptions and journey from childhood through young adulthood to the beginning of her career, and beyond.

The title story in Anthropologist is that of autistic Temple Grandin, whose own book Thinking in Pictures gives her version of how she feels--as unlike other humans as a cow or a Martian. The other minds Sacks describes are equally remarkable: a surgeon with Tourette's syndrome, a painter who loses color vision, a blind man given the ambiguous gift of sight, artists with memories that overwhelm "real life," the autistic artist Stephen Wiltshire, and a man with memory damage for whom it is always 1968.

Thorn in My Pocket: Temple Grandin's Mother Tells the Family Story
Amazon Price: $15.13 (as of 02/17/2012)![]()
A Thorn in My Pocket is Eustacia Cutler's story of raising her daughter, Temple Grandin, in the conservative Leave-it-to-Beaver world of the fifties, a time when children with autism were routinely diagnosed as "infant schizophrenics" and banished to institutions. She tells of her fight to keep Temple in the mainstream of family, community, and school life, how Temple responded and went on to succeed, as Ms. Cutler puts it, "beyond my wildest dreams." Ms. Cutler also explores the nature of the autism disorder as doctors understand it today, and how its predominant characteristics reflect our own traits in an exaggerated form.
