Templeton Farmers Market is More Than Fresh Produce

Ranked #8,857 in Arts & Design, #151,811 overall

If you picture a farmers market as a giant produce department, Templeton Farmers Market might surprise you.

At the Templeton Farmers Market on Saturday mornings, you can find a number of items besides fresh produce. There are baked goods, unique dog treats, pottery, flowers, olives and pickled garlic, honey, jewelry, hats, flowers and succulents arranged around collectible objects, and more. You never know when something new and unexpected will show up or a new vendor will appear. The purpose of this lens is to show you many of the non-produce items I see at the market from time to time.

Some vendors only come seasonally. Others come almost every week. Between them they provide a wide variety of goods. Those selling food items that are processed, such as bottled olives or bakery goods, will often give you a taste to persuade you to buy. Those selling craft items they have made just display their products and are there to answer questions about them. I have interviewed some of those who make what they sell about their businesses and products for this lens. For me, the Farmers Market experience is as much about people as about products.

Now let's see what's available when you might choose to come to Farmers Market and talk to the people who produce it.

One of the first booths I see when I enter is Moonstone Pottery

The owner, Barbara Flynn, has created many beautiful pieces. I will show you some of them in the videos below. In the first one she tells us about her business. It's a completely impromptu and unexpected interview for her, so she's thinking on her feet. In the second video she tells us about one particular piece she created and how she did it.

Farmers Market is a family event.

Take your children with you so they can learn where their food comes from and talk to local farmers, artisans and musicians..

I'm a great believer in supporting your local Farmers Market.

You can show your support of local farmers and craftspeople with some of these products from Zazzle. If you are a farmer or market vendor, you might want to personalize one of these business cards to hand to people. You can customize most of them to fit your own needs.. The products I have purchased myself from are the quality I was hoping for. I do recommend, though, that if you ladies buy T-shirts, you get them two sizes larger than you think you need unless you like to wear them skin tight.

Gary's Succulent Arrangements

Gary Billington sells raisins and dates. He also sells unique, individually designed arrangement of succulent plants, often with decorative objects as part of the arrangement. In this video you will see some of his arrangements and learn how he got started making them. His wife also makes an appearance.

Great stuff here about your local farmer's market. I love the Zazzle stuff too. I had a coworker who loved going to San Louis Obispo for a farmer's market. Have you ever been to that one? We go to Pismo in the spring and I have been wanting to visit a farmer's market up there. You don't look to far from Pismo either :)

I've been to the one in San Luis Obispo once, but I think it's harder to park there, and it's at night, so I don't like walking alone to a parking place a log way off. I normally am not in the area on Thursday night, either. I really don't think they've got any better market than we do in Templeton, and some of the same vendors go to both.

Pismo is about 45 minutes south of here, but I rarely have occasion to go there. Cambria is closer and a prettier drive if we want to be on the coast.

I not only like to shop at Farmers Markets, but actively participate in mine. I sell crafts and people visiting the Farmers Market to buy fresh produce also seem to enjoy browsing and/or buying handmade crafts and homemade foods. The best part is 'visiting' with the customers - everyone is always so friendly and enjoying their Farmers Market experience. I think most people like having other choices besides the produce they came to buy -- handmade crafts, from jewelry to pottery to cute stuffed animals gives the customer a chance to also pick up a needed birthday gift or something new to wear or use in their home, and appreciate locally handmade work.

More about BarbRad

I try to get to my local farmers market here in Templeton every Saturday. Frequently new vendors appear, new musicians wanting to get some publicity perform, and many new budding musicians of all ages can be seen hoping for tips. Sometimes I suspect that's how their parents motivate them to practice. If you check out my other Templeton lenses below, you'll see even more on our local farmers market and some of the more unique attractions that appear from time to time.

More about Templeton

I am happier living in Templeton than in any of my previous homes. : ( You can learn more about those other places here) Most of my life was spent in Southern California in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. I was not unhappy in those places, but when we moved here, I knew I had found where I wanted to spend the rest of my life.

If you're like me, when you go produce shopping at Farmers Market, you are sometimes intrigued by fruits and vegetables that are new to you. You might like to try them, but are in the dark as to how to cook them. This cookbook solves that problem. It's divided by vegetable or fruit, and after giving you hints as to how to select the freshest vegetables and guiding you as to when each vegetable is in season, the author provides recipes for most vegetables you are likely to find at Farmers Market.

There are complete descriptions of over 100 vegetables and fruits. This book is highly reviewed by Amazon customers, and I'm putting it on my wish list. Click through and read the reviews for yourself and see if this book is likely to belong in your recipe book collection.
