How to Survive Thanksgiving : How to Plan Ahead for Thanksgiving

Learn why it's important to plan ahead for Thanksgiving dinner to survive the holidays with your family in this free advice video.
powered by Youtube

Personally, I start a month before Thanksgiving. I get out some paper and a pencil, sit down and think about my Thanksgiving plans. Dinner party with family and friends? What am I serving (menu)? What time will we eat? Will there be children ~ how many? But then, I have all my information in a notebook too! I'm sharing some of my favorite & best time saving tips with you here.

10. Two Weeks Before Thanksgiving

Time To Plan Your Thanksgiving Dinner

These tips are designed to help you think ahead and find where you can save time by doing things ahead of when you need them. The more we can spread the work out, the less it will *feel* like work and the more you can enjoy your Thanksgiving Day! Don't wear yourself out before the big day!
  • Invite your guests, if you haven't already. You'll need to know how many people to plan the menu for. Determine whether anyone is bringing a dish and/or whether anyone will be helping you in the kitchen before, during and after the meal. Don't be shy about asking or accepting help! The more help you have, the less tired you'll be. Having somebody helping you will also keep you company while you work ~ make it a good way to expand the holiday a little.
  • Plan your menu; don't forget to account for the number of people that will be eating. Get all your favorite recipes together and see if you can find one or two new recipes to try. You might just find another family favorite. If you need to find your favorite recipes, gather them up now. You'd be surprised how many things this alone makes you think about!
  • Make out your grocery list for Thanksgiving recipe ingredients. Check all your regular staples too, like sugar, flour, salt, etc. You don't want to run out in the middle of cooking. Will you be needing paper goods? Add them to your grocery list now. If you figure out what you need now, you can split the cost of your dinner over a couple of weeks ~ less pain in the pocketbook.
  • Check on your utensils and cooking equipment; do you have your own roasting pan, or do you need to buy one? Where are your mixers, thermometers, knives, measuring cups and spoons. Don't catch yourself scrambling for your "tools" at the last minute.
  • Think about preparing your bread dough, pie crusts and perhaps some other ingredients and freezing them now. You can make your pie crusts and leave them in the pie plates ready to bake. Cover them with clear plastic wrap & toss them in the freezer. Can you make your dinner rolls, corn bread, casseroles ahead of time and freeze them?

9. Start Your House Cleaning Early

Give yourself plenty of time to get your home ready for guests

  • Figure out now what you want to clean before the Thanksgiving holiday. Make a plan so that you can do some of it every day. Do you need to clean one or more bathrooms? Does your kitchen need a good cleaning? How about those ceiling fans, heating filters or drapes and window blinds?
  • Start your heavy housecleaning now & keep it clean as you go ~ it's easier than it sounds, once it's clean! And it's certainly easier than trying to clean house and cook at the same time. Do your heavy cleaning first, starting now and you'll have a company-ready home by Thanksgiving.
  • Spend 15 minutes at a time on your heavy cleaning & take breaks. You're doing your housework ahead of time to make it easier, not to exhaust yourself. Work on one room at a time, and once it's clean ~ all you have to do is maintain it. Start from the top of the room to the bottom or from left to right, etc. Working quickly = more time to play!
  • Continue preparing any freeze-ahead items, if needed. The time you save now, will be oh so worth it later!

Break big jobs down into smaller parts so that you can work on them a little every day.

8. Plan some fun activities for the kids

Keeping the kids entertained on Thanksgiving

  • Depending on the ages of the children that are coming, find some board games, movies, etc. that will keep them occupied before and after the Thanksgiving meal. This will give the adults time to visit without stressing over the "bored" kids!
  • If there are older & younger age groups, perhaps the older kids or teens can lead the games for the young ones. Bribe your teenagers to help with that! Extra babysitting money for them, means happier youngsters and relaxed adults.

Netflix Movies ~ Fun Entertainment For Thanksgiving

Children's Movies and New Releases Would Be Great Picks!

001- Night at the Museum

Chaos reigns at the natural history museum when night watchman Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) accidentally stirs up an ancient curse, awakening Attila the Hun, an army of gladiators, a Tyrannosaurus rex and other exhibits. Larry tries desperately to keep the museum under control, but he's fighting a losing battle until President Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams) comes to the rescue. Owen Wilson and Dick Van Dyke co-star in this family-friendly fantasy.
002- The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe

When four London children (Georgie Henley, William Moseley, Skandar Keynes and Anna Popplewell) are sent away to a country home for safety during World War II, they discover a magical wardrobe that leads them to Narnia, a snowy and fantastical land under the spell of an evil witch (Tilda Swinton). Rupert Everett and Jim Broadbent co-star in this visually stunning tale, the first in a series of films based on C.S. Lewis's classic novels.
003- WALL-E

In a futuristic world, human beings have destroyed Earth and evacuated the planet, leaving the cleanup to an army of robots they've programmed to do their dirty work. Due to a mishap, the dutiful WALL-E is the only one left. But with the arrival of a female probe, the monotony of WALL-E's existence is broken -- and he experiences love for the first time. Andrew Stanton directs this Golden Globe- and Oscar-winning Pixar tale with a sci-fi twist.
004- Ratatouille

Brad Bird (The Incredibles) co-directs this Oscar-winning Pixar offering about a passionate rat named Remy (voiced by Patton Oswalt) who thirsts for a sip of the good life, despite the questionable tastes of his rodent relatives. Growing up beneath a five-star Parisian restaurant, Remy inherits a taste for fine food. But his culinary ambitions only anger his practical father, who wishes his son could just eat garbage like everyone else.
005- Cars

Prepare to peel out with this revved-up animated adventure featuring classic automobiles, plenty of fender benders, guffaws galore and a nostalgic Route 66 road trip with a crew that doesn't make pit stops. The star-studded voice cast includes Paul Newman, Owen Wilson, Bonnie Hunt and Cheech Marin. Nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, Cars won Best Animated Film in the first category of its kind at the 2007 Golden Globes.
006- Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story

Down-and-out horse trainer Ben Crane (Kurt Russell) gets an equally broken-down (but once great) racehorse as severance pay. But it will take the unwavering faith of his daughter (Dakota Fanning) to bring the two damaged souls together in a quest to win the Breeders' Cup Classic. Elisabeth Shue, Oded Fehr and Kris Kristofferson co-star in director John Gatins's heartwarming tale loosely based on actual events.
007- Happy Feet

Living with his colony in the Antarctic, young emperor penguin Mumble is aptly named: While his friends use their singing skills to attract mates, his caterwauling sends potential sweethearts waddling in the opposite direction. Yet Mumble is blessed with an unusual gift -- he can tap dance in a way that would make Fred Astaire jealous. Elijah Wood, Nicole Kidman, Robin Williams and Hugh Jackman lend their voices to this spirited Oscar winner.
008- Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events

After their parents are tragically killed, three young orphans -- siblings Violet (Emily Browning), Klaus (Liam Aiken) and Sunny -- are taken in by the cunning and dastardly Count Olaf (Jim Carrey), who hopes to snatch their inheritance from them. Meryl Streep, Billy Connolly and Timothy Spall co-star in director Brad Silberling's take on the best-selling series of darkly funny children's books, with Jude Law narrating as Lemony Snicket.
009- Kung Fu Panda

When the Valley of Peace is threatened, lazy Po the panda discovers his destiny as the "chosen one" and trains to become a kung fu hero, but transforming the unsleek slacker into a brave warrior won't be easy. It's up to Master Shifu and the Furious Five -- Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey -- to give it a try in this Oscar nominee for Best Animated Feature. Celebrity voices include Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie and Jackie Chan.
010- Bridge to Terabithia

New classmate Leslie Burke (AnnaSophia Robb) unlocks a mesmerizing world of fantasy and imagination for fifth-grader Jesse Aaron (Josh Hutcherson) in this magical adventure based on the best-selling novel for young adults by author Katherine Paterson. The two outcasts, who are rivals at first, eventually become friends and create the make-believe kingdom of Terabithia, where they reign supreme and plot vengeance against school bullies.

7. Decorate Early - Enjoy It More

Get In The Holiday Spirit!

  • Decorating can be as much fun as admiring your handiwork if you do it early. Figure out early what Fall/Autumn decorating you want to do and in which rooms. Make note of where your seasonal items are - the attic? the garage? the closet?
  • Dust, wash or otherwise shine up your pretty decorations. Make sure any lighted or electric items work. Do you need batteries? Afghans & pillows should be cleaned or washed.

Ideas For Fall & Thanksgiving Decor

Have fun decorating!

6. About A Week Before Thanksgiving...

Let's Get Ready For Thanksgiving!

  • If you use coupons ~ sort them out now. Find all the ones you need and clip them to your grocery list or make sure they're in your coupon organizer. Check the sales for the best buys too. Don't miss out on those dollar store sales either!
  • Finish up your grocery shopping now. Double-check your list to make sure you have what you need. And don't forget the toilet paper, shampoo and light bulbs? Yikes! Try to get to the grocery store early in the day to enjoy the freshly stocked shelves.
  • Get out all your tableware, serving dishes and silver. Make sure everything is clean and ready for the big day. Wash & press your linens. What will you be using for a centerpiece?
  • Keep maintaining your clean home. Spend 15 minute blocks here and there, picking things up & putting them away, dusting and/or vacuuming & keeping the bathroom sparkly and you'll thank yourSELF by Thanksgiving.

5. Make Room For The Goodies

MORE Cleaning? You'll Be Glad You Did!

  • Clean out the refrigerator. Use up what you can. Freeze what you can. Toss what you can, but get it as empty as you can. Then, give it a good cleaning inside and out. Mmmm...a nice clean fridge ~ just waiting for all those groceries and prepared dishes...and LEFTOVERS!
  • Clean your oven ~ no time like the present to give your oven a good cleaning before it gets its holiday workout! Set some foil under the element (if electric) or at the bottom of the oven to catch those spills. This will help ease your after Thanksgiving clean-up.
  • Have room in your pantry for all those ingredients you need? I like to try to clear out whole shelf in mine, just for my Thanksgiving cooking ingredients. Makes it easier to find everything as I work.

Get plenty of rest! Don't stress out over the details. That's what all this planning is for! Make sure to take some time for yourself every day and relax. You don't want to sit down at the Thanksgiving table exhausted, cranky and forget the reason for the holiday, now do you?

You'll Need Some Freezer Storage Containers

Make sure you have enough of what you need

4. Three Days Before Thanksgiving

Can you feel the excitement building?

  • If you're going to use extra tables and chairs, it couldn't hurt to try to arrange space for them now. Do you know where your extra chairs are? Do they need to be cleaned? Do it now.
  • Set the table. Nope, I'm not kidding. If you can manage it, set the table and cover it with a sheet. If you can't do this, it's okay. Just finish getting your tableware, linens, silverware and any table decor you're planning together & ready to set up.
  • If you're going to use extra tables and chairs, it couldn't hurt to try to arrange space for them now, too. Do you know where your extra chairs are? Do they need to be cleaned? Do it now.
  • Depending on the weight of the turkey; move it from the freezer to the refrigerator to thaw. Consider that every 5 pounds of turkey will require 24 hours of thaw time in the refrigerator (i.e., a 15-pound bird will take 3 full days).
  • If you're having overnight guests, set up the guest room now. Fresh sheets, blankets. Dust & vacuum. If you have time, a nice guest basket with soaps, bath salts, tea, etc would be so welcoming.

Hi! :-)
Great lens! Thanks so much for taking the time to make it!
I do have one question though. I'm not American, yet I'm making Thanksgiving dinner for 24 people; so (due to oven-space restraints) is it OK if I cook the turkey the day before and refrigerate it? Or does it have to be served hot?
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

3. Two Days Before Thanksgiving

Let's Get Started!

  • Prepare any of your dishes that can be made ahead now. That way, all you have to do is pop them in the oven when it's time to cook. Make your cranberry sauce and/or other sauces & dressings and toss them in the fridge.
  • If you have any big recipes ~ like my cornbread dressing, chop up a storm now! I cut and refrigerate my celery, onion and bacon right about now. I bake up all my cornbread and crumble it. Believe me, I use a lot of zip lock baggies in all sizes!
  • Remember to clean everything up as you go. This was one of the most helpful things I ever learned. Run a sink full of hot soapy water & toss your bowls, utensils and pots in there as you go. Wash while you wait for something to cook, if you can. By the time you're done with a dish, you can wipe down the counters and you really are done. Clean up is a snap!
  • Believe me, I use a lot of zip lock baggies in all sizes by preparing so many things ahead of time. But I also use freezer containers. Why? Since much of what I prepare ahead of time is vegetable or bread & will be used to cook with ~ I wash the freezer containers and they are ready for leftovers!

2. The Day Before Thanksgiving

It's almost here!

  • Menu in hand, think about what order you need to cook what dish on Thanksgiving Day. Can you make your pies the day before? Your bread? Think it out & if it helps you, write down a "cooking schedule."
  • Bake your pies today. If you prepared and froze your pie crusts, like I do, take them out of the freezer & thaw them awhile first. Cover & refrigerate the finished pies.
  • Set the table now, if you haven't already. You can cover it with a clean sheet ~ I have two dogs, LOL. If you're planning on extra seating, set that up now too, rearranging the furniture if you need to.
  • Make your salad; cut up veggies for a relish tray if you haven't already. If you're making any gelatin molds, make them now and refrigerate.
  • Remember to clean up after yourself as you go. Keep that sink full of hot soapy water and wash up as you go. You'll be done in no time!
  • Check your grocery list one last time to make sure you aren't missing anything. Stores are usually closed all or most of the day on Thanksgiving. You did remember the toilet paper, right? LOL

Thanksgiving Dinner Day

Hurray! The long awaited happy day is finally here!

  • Quick clean any areas that need sprucing up before your company arrives; especially the areas that your guests will be using, like the bathroom.
  • Set the table or uncover your already-set table. Put the finishing touches on your lovely holiday table now.
  • Count back 5-7 hours before it's time to eat and that's about the time you want to start working on your turkey. Take it out of the fridge and let it come to room temperature. Rinse it in cool water and remove the giblets. Toss the giblets on to boil for your gravy.
  • Make your dressing or stuffing early in the day. Refer to the list you made and finish off your vegetable dishes, potatoes, bread or rolls and relish plate. A crock pot can be handy to help keep things warm if you need it.
  • If you stuff your turkey, do it now and get him into the oven. Calculate roasting time by the weight of the turkey & follow any other instructions provided. I totally recommend Martha Stewart's Roast Turkey 101 (in the helpful links section below) ~ YUMMY turkey! Line your roasting pan with aluminum foil before cooking to speed up your clean up later.
  • Keep up with the dishes! Make sure your dishwasher is empty. If you have time & are able, you could run a load of the bowls, cups & utensils you use while you eat. Other non-dishwasher items should be washed up while you work, as you finish with it and/or when you're done cooking. Clean up as you go to avoid that huge job later.
  • If you've been breaking up the big jobs into smaller jobs, by now all you need to do is the actual cooking. My candied yams are oven ready, the infamous green bean casserole (yep, we still love it, LOL) is assembled & ready to cook except for the fried onions. My frozen bread dough or rolls come out of the freezer to thaw now. My cubed potatoes come out of the fridge & ready to boil for the mashed potatoes. And so on.

How To Cut the Post-Thanksgiving Dinner Cleanup in Half

Good tips & Really Cute ~ Made Me Giggle!

Cut your Thanksgiving Day dinner clean-up in half with these time-saving tips.
powered by Youtube

Money-saving tip: Make homemade turkey stock from the turkey carcass. Refrigerate or freeze the carcass until you're ready to make the turkey stock.

Easy & Tasty Turkey Stock

Bonus Tip! A Recipe!

Break turkey carcass into pieces & place in a large stock pot with a sliced carrot, a medium onion (chopped), 2 chopped gloves of garlic, and 1-2 sliced celery ribs. Heat over medium low heat until stock comes to a simmer; reduce heat to low. Do not let the stock boil to prevent clouding. Skim froth from stock continuously. The more you remove, the less chance for clouding too. Simmer for 2-3 hours & keep removing the froth. Remove all the bones, meat & vegetables when it's done & strain stock through sieve or cheesecloth into freezer containers. Refrigerate overnight to let the fat rise to the top. Remove the fat & it's done! This stock can be frozen for up to 3 months or refrigerated for about a week.
