My Top 10 Favorite Cookbooks of All Time

Ranked #5,097 in Food & Cooking, #91,285 overall

"Learn to cook--try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, be fearless and above all have fun!" -- Julia Child

I really enjoy cooking and have an entire section of my basement devoted to cooking books and cookware because my kitchen is not big enough to hold them all! I have been fortunate enough to have been surrounded by some really good cooks. My mother and grandmother are not the best cooks so fortunately I know lack of talent for cooking is not hereditary!

My step-dad who is a great cook one day told me. 'Cooking is about following directions.' Which is true. To get started just simply follow directions, learn how food blends and then experiment! I have compiled a list of my all time favorite cookbooks.

Cookbooks are wonderful holiday and birthday gifts. If you are looking for a wonderful cookbook to use as a gift my favorite is the Neiman Marcus Cookbook or The Great American Cookie Cookbook.

The Great American Cookie Cookbook

For the sweet tooth.

This is a great book for all mom's out there. It has every cookie you can think of and then some. The recipes are easy, taste great and with an entire section titled Kooky Kiddie it is easy to incorporate the kids.

My Favorites
No Bake Chocolate Oat Bars - This is the number one recipe my friends ask me for!
Rich and Creamy Brownie Bars
Cheery Chocolate Animal Cookies- Chocolate, Oreos and Animal Crackers are just about all you need for these fun cookies!

Neiman Marcus Cookbook

Divine takes time!

Delightful recipes for dinner guests or a great gift for a friend! I love, love, love this cookbook. A friend gave it to me as a gift years ago and I will never let it go.

Who doesn't want the secret recipe to their famous Chocolate Chip Cookies? Not that I have had the delightful pleasure of actually eating the real deal but I have heard, oh I heard!

Why do I like this so much, aside from the fabulous name? Well, I like to cook foods that are a little off the beaten path and do not mind taking my time in the kitchen. A number of their recipes can be rather involved but so worth the time. If you like to spend time in the kitchen and have a palletly pleasing meal to delight your dinner guests, this is a great cookbook!

My Favorites
Northpark Chicken Tortilla Soup
Monkey Bread (my family begs for this one).
Pine Crusted Chicken
Hot Chocolate Cakes

Betty Crocker Everything You Need To Know to Cook Today

The Basic Cookbook

This is not the most exciting cookbook you will ever have in your kitchen, but no kitchen is complete without a solid book of standard recipes. Every female in my family has a version of this cookbook. The version I have has great photos, directions all in a nice 3 ring binder so that I can add more recipes. It also has a reference page for emergency substitutions (which comes in handy when there are snow storms!)

The book is very informative and the recipes are solid. This is great book for when you have a few ingredients and need to make a standard family meal.

Southern Living Magazine

Southern girl at heart!

I have yet to find a bad recipe in the Southern Living Magazine. If you have the benefit of living in the south and host a dinner utilizing that month's recipes, your guests will ooohh and aaahhh over how they wanted to try that recipe! And they all come out great.

If you are not ready to subscribe or purchase the cookbook, many local libraries sell back issues of magazines for a few cents on the dollar. Souther Living also has a great website where they feature their recipes.

The Food Websites

When you are looking for that special recipe.

On-line recipe websites are great resources. With more recipes than you could cook in a lifetime there is bound to be something on there you like! With most recipes rated or reviewed, its hard to go wrong. Some of my favorites chefs are Tyler Florence, Emeril Lagasse and Rachael Ray. Check out Food Network or The Rachael Ray Show websites for great recipes.

My Favorites
Spaghetti Bolognese by Emeril Lagasse - This makes a huge batch but freezes great!
Italian Chicken Chili with Pancetta Croutons by Rachael Ray - Another great recipe you can freeze.

Deceptively Delicious

This recipe book is designed to 'sneak' in healthy foods into children's favorites. Even if your children are not crazy over all the recipes, it provides some great ideas on how to disguise fruits and vegetables into their meals.

MY FAVORITES
Oatmeal - This variety adds pumpkin, peanut butter and brown sugar into your traditional oatmeal.
Italian Meat Loaf - Adding carrot puree to your standard meatloaf adds an extra serving of vegetables and added taste.
Mashed Potatoes - With cauliflower. I actually like the recipe myself.
Chocolate Fondue - I never even noticed the avocado in this chocolate dip when my friend made it for a get together.

Bonus: Favorites from Family and Friends

Recipes close to the heart.

You will not find these in the store! These are your grandmother's mac and cheese or Coca-Cola cake recipes, our friend's creative favorite or something you have tweaked yourself! I still have the recipe book my best friend's mother made for us when we were 16. These are special keepers!

Collect your favorites and make your own cookbook to reference. I have all of my favorites retyped in one general location that I go to again and again!

Great Recipes!
