The GPS: One of Man's Greatest Breakthrough

Satellites are but one of the many breakthrough of made, especially with the fact that it was intended to orbit the earth in space. In every sci-fi or spy series, these satellites have been a highlight, either meant to be a top secret weaponry or part of a defense system. But one of the many features that these were made to represent, the tracking system is something that is presently at hand.

It's like having an undetected tenant screening. Spies have used this to follow the trail of the person they are to check out.  The satellite (reality people) that is used for this purpose, and many more for that matter, is the GPS (Global Positioning Satellite). It has become an important tool for transportation systems and life-saving missions.

Transportation, presently, is dependent with proper navigation. With the help of the GPS, a full surveillance provides pilots with the guidance for shorter and safer distances. Navigating planes and ships are done accurately especially with giving present locations within the Earth's grid: longitude and latitude.

Cell phones, television and other locating systems, have been dependent on this technology. In rescue missions, taking note of a cell phone's signal may help learning the whereabouts of a person. It is possible that phone number reverse services are using this to track criminals, prank callers, even long lost relatives.

Detective services are not the only thing that benefits from GPS. The fields of farming, surveying, geology are but some that gain great help from such. Workers, not only in these mentioned fields, are able to perform their tasks more efficiently, economically, and accurately.

At present, another GPS is also used in navigation-assistance for the blind. This was first used in the late 1980, as one of the several research projects. This is like canes and guide dogs. The said GPS (global positioning system) is called the Loadstone project. It develops open source software for satellite navigation that helps people with visual impairment. It presently runs in Nokia devices with S60 platform under Symbian operating system.

Global Positioning technology was first seen as means for good guys to get back at the bad guys. In real life it still does as it helps in locating criminals. Furthermore jobs are a lot easier especially in locating missing persons. Earthquakes are usually detected through topographical changes. Referencing the last whereabouts of certain vehicle is also one of its advantages especially in shipwrecks, aircraft crashes, where relatives of victims are usually at the topmost of those worried: giving them the ease or at least the help in finding out whether their loved ones are safe…

It is but a wonder to think about how this technology was conceptualized. It's like one of those spy movies that seems to conduct a tenant screening on some suspected person. Definitely, the GPS is one of man's greatest innovations.
