The Wonderful World of Birds

Birds are a most amazing group of species, the closest living relatives of dinosaurs, indeed there is evidence to suggest that they are dinosaurs.

I have been watching birds since I was 7 years old, but it didn't take me long to see that bird behaviour is complex and varied, and that birds are capable of remarkable feats of intelligence and dexterity.

The following are a collection of interesting bird video clips that show some amazing examples of bird behaviour. A number of these clips are from the excellent BBC television series "The Life of Birds".

The Life of Birds

1. Birds of Paradise Crazy Courtship

This clip shows the amazing lengths to which male Birds of Paradise will go in order to attract a mate; household chores, love songs and finally an amazing jungle boogie.

2. Flock of Starlings Attacked by Peregrine Falcon

An amazing display of formation flying by a flock of Starlings whilst under bombardment by a Peregrine Falcon.

Falcon Attack: Peregrine Divebombs Flock of Starlings

A Peregrine Falcon repeatedly divebombs a flock of starlings coming home to roost. Shot at dusk from the racetrack roof of the old FIAT factory in Torino Italy. Starlings roost in the center atrium of the building at night.

3. Albatross Flying School

Juvenile Albatrosses learrning to fly are stalked by a Tiger Shark. These huge birds struggle to take to the air, but the shark infested waters provide an added motivation to learn quickly.

4. Great Hornbill Feeding Mate

This video clip shows a male Great Hornbill passing food to his mate in Khao Yai National Park Thailand. The female hornbill is sealed into a cavity in a tree, using mud, where she broods her egg and is totally reliant on the male for food and water.

5. The Incredible Call of the Lyrebird

This is probably my favourite video clip. This amazing lyrebird is able to perfectly mimic the sound of a car alarm, a camera shutter and, best of all, a chainsaw and splintering wood.

Amazing! Bird sounds from the lyre bird - David Attenborough - BBC wildlife

David Attenborough presents the amazing lyre bird, which mimics the calls of other birds - and chainsaws and camera shutters - in this video clip from The Life of Birds. This clever creature is one of the most impressive and funny in nature, with unbelievable sounds to match the beautiful pictures. From the BBC.

6. A Mass of Shearwaters

In this video clip a huge number of Shearwaters are flocking to feed on a shoal of fish. A group of dolphins has also been attracted to the site as have a group of snorkelling humans.

7. Keas Vandalizing a Car

Keas are endemic to New Zealand and a most remarkable parrot. This species lives in snowy mountains and forests and as well as eating seeds, nuts and fruit, they are partial to meat - young birds and even sheep. They are also quite famous for ripping cars apart as this video shows.

kea parrot trouble

kea parrots ripping the spare tyre cover of 4x4 at franz joseph glacier new zealand on our hliday.NOT our 4x4....we saw the people take pictures of the parrots as they landed on the car.thenwalked off.....we did nothing, and when i sat the birds came over ,so all up to them and i was lucky to have been involved....

9. Hummingbirds on Nectar Feeder

Some nice footage of Hummingbirds coming to a nectar feeder

August Hummingbirds

Some clips I shot a few years ago with my Fuji S5000 camera of predominately female and immature Ruby Throated Hummingbirds. I never put red food coloring into the sugar solution anymore. The hummingbirds find the feeders just fine without it. Lately I've begun using an actinic (brown) glass hummingbird feeder. It is easier to clean. 10. Crow makes and uses a tool to get food

Crows are amongst the most intelligent of birds as this video clip proves. Over a course of experiments into avian intelligence this female crow consistently created a hook from a straight piece of wire to collect a food morsel from a glass tube. Quite amazing - this is one of the highest examples of animal intelligence known.
