War Movies

My Grandfather fought in Europe in World War 2 and all things military stayed in his blood until he passed away. When I was young, my grandparents used to take care of me on Saturdays when my parents were working and I ended up watching loads of old war movies with my grandfather and listening to his stories about the war.

Thanks to my Grandfather, I also became a fan of war movies.

War movies are one of the most popular genres around with hundreds of titles having been produced since the 1920s. War movies can sometimes be dramas set in a time of war but usually focus on some aspect of the conflict itself such as prisoners of war, military training or, most popularly, naval, aerial or land battles.

This lens focuses on war movies featuring battle scenes.

The World at War

The World at War is probably the best documentary ever made about World War 2, featuring lots of real footage and interviews with veterans.

This was one of my Grandfather's favourites and I watched it many times with him; for anyone interested in this part of modern history it is a must see documentary.

1. Zulu

Zulu, starring Michael Caine and Stanley Baker, is the dramatisation of the true events at Rourke's Drift in South Africa in 1879 during the Anglo-Zulu War. Having defeated a large British force the previous day at Isandhlwana the Zulu army moved on to attack the small outpost of Rourke's Drift, fortified by around 100 men.

The movie features some stirring battle scenes and does a great job of showing the scale of Zulu and British forces.

An excellent movie that I have watched dozens of times and still enjoy.

2. Lawrence of Arabia

Lawrence of Arabia is an epic movie about the life of T.E. Lawrence who helped unify Arab tribes against the Turks in Arabia during World War 1.

The movie is regarded by many as one of the finest ever made and with depictions of attacks on Aqaba and Damascus it is an action-filled war movie as well as a drama.

3. Bang Rajan

This is a little-known Thai movie about a group of Siamese villagers fighting a large invading Burmese force in 1767. Although the production and storytelling is not up to Hollywood standards there are some good battle scenes and memorable characters.

This movie is based on a true tale and it is a nice story of battle against adversity. The battle scenes use huge numbers of extras rather than CGI giving a chaotic and realistic touch to them.

Whilst not one of the most famous war movies on this list, it is the only movie that one is likely to see that features a buffalo-mounted cavalry charge.

4. The Longest Day

The Longest Day is a star-studded movie about the events of June 6 1944 when the Allied armies invaded Normandy in order to establish a western front on which to fight the Germans.

The movie used many advisors who were actually involved in the scenes portrayed and in the original version French and German was spoken by the appropriate sides.

This is a war movie not to be issed by enthusiasts.

5. We Were Soldiers

We were soldiers stars Mel Gibson and is the dramatisation of the battle of La Drang in 1965, which was the first major engagement of US and North Vietnamese forces in the Vietnam War.

The movie features one of the most prolonged and graffic battle scenes of any war movie and is based upon an account written by two Americans who were actually present at the battle. However, typically, the movie distorts the truth but the outcome is an excellent movie.

The scene here is when the Americans are faced with being overrun and call in air support.

6. The Dambusters

This iconic movie dramatises the development of Barnes Wallis's "bouncing bomb" and the attacks on thr Ruhr dams in Germany during World War 2.

This movie is one which depicts a specialist raid upon the industrial heartland of Germany and is highly memorable for the bombing runs at the end. These bombing runs apparently were highly influential in the scenes in Star Wars where Luke Skywalker destroys the Death Star.

This excellent movie also has an iconic score and the Dambusters March is often sung by England football supporters at matches.

The Dambusters - The First Dam

The Lancasters attack their first target. A lot of people have compared the climactic scene in Star Wars Episode IV to this scene, although Lucas admitted he was inspired by the climax of "633 Squadron." From the movie "The Dambusters"

8. Waterloo

This movie depicts the build-up and events of one of the most famous battles ever: Waterloo.

This is the battle in which Napoleon received his final defeat at the hands of a force commanded by The Duke of Wellington, a force which consisted of armies of English, Irish, Dutch and Prussian troops.

The movie contains lengthy battle scenes and shows how the battle swung in one direction and then the other before the arrival of a large Prussian force tipped it in Wellington's favour.

This scene shows the British heavy cavalry being routed by French lancers.

The Battle of Waterloo - Charge of the British Heavy Cavalry

"At this crucial juncture, Uxbridge ordered his two brigades of British heavy cavalry, formed unseen behind the ridge, to charge in support of the hard-pressed infantry. Continuing their attack, the squadrons on the left of the Household Brigade then destroyed Aulard's brigade. Despite attempts to recall them, however, they continued past La Haye Sainte and found themselves at the bottom of the hill on blown horses facing Schmitz's brigade formed in squares. Napoleon promptly responded by ordering a counter-attack by the cuirassier brigades of Farine and Travers and Jaquinot's two lancer regiments in the I Corps light cavalry division. The result was very heavy losses for the British cavalry." 9. Gallipoli

Gallipoli is the story of two young Australian men who enlist as soldiers and are sent to Gallipoli to fight the Turkish army in World War 1.

Much of the film deals with the loss of innocence of the Australian soldiers but there are quite graphic depictions of the battle at Nek where Australian forces are massacred.

Gallipoli - Trailer

10. Saving Private Ryan

Saving Private Ryan is a drama set on and after the D-Day landings in World War 2. The story revolves around a group of soldiers, dispatched to rescue Private Ryan, whose three bothers have all been killed in action.

Whilst the story is interesting it is the battle scenes in this movie which really make it memorable. Saving Private Ryan begins with one of the most disturbing battle scenes ever filmed with the sound of bullets creating a terrifying atmosphere.

This is one movie I would suggest watching on as large a screen as possible with a surround sound system to fully appreciate the ferocity of the fighting.

The scene here is most of the opening D--Day landing scene.
