Terminator 4 - The Return of the Terminator aka Terminator Salvation
Christian Bale has been signed to star as John Connor in three new Terminator movies, the first of which is Terminator 4 : The Return of the Terminator. The original working title was Terminator Salvation : The Future Begins, but this was changed at the suggestion of director McG (of Charlie's Angels fame).
Arnold Schwarzenegger will not appear in the movie due to commitments as Govenor of California (although he has indicated that he would like to be in the movie, and might make arrangements if any of the filming occured in California).
Bryce Dallas Howard has replaced Charlotte Gainsbourg (who replaced Clare Danes) as Kate Brewster Connor.

John Connor
Christian Bale
As mentioned, Christian Bale will star as the adult John Connor in Terminator 4. It's not clear how much screen time Bale will get as Connor, as the story line seems to revolve around the society he is rebuilding, rather than focusing on Connor himself. It is likely that the complex relationship between John Connor and Kyle Reese will be explored in these sequels, with John aware that Kyle is his father, while Kyle considers John to be just a good friend. Also weighing heavily on John's mind is the fact that Kyle will die in order for John to exist.

Kyle Reese
Anton Yelchin
In a slightly bizarre casting decision, 19 year old Anton Yelchin has been cast as Kyle Reese, making him (apparently) ten years younger than John Connor. It's not yet clear how this will be played out, but the obvious possibilities will be that Kyle may (ironically) look up to John as a father-figure.Still of Anton Yelchin from Charlie Bartlett, copyright © Sidney Kimmel Entertainment
Marcus Wright
Sam Worthington
Marcus is an intriguing new character, possibly a criminal who was on death row when Judgement Day occured. It seems that Marcus will wake up to find the world in a post-apocolyptic state of chaos. In other words: Perfect. Except for this John Connor character who wants to run a resistance and attempt to build a society with some sort of order.Image of Sam Worthington, photographer unknown, source.
Kate Brewster Connor
Bryce Dallas Howard
Claire Danes, the only actor worth watching in Terminator 3, turned down the role for the T3 sequel. Originally Charlotte Gainsbourg was cast in Danes' place, but she was unable to continue due to other commitments.Gainsbourg has been replaced by Bryce Dallas Howard, daughter of director Ron Howard, who is best known for her roles in the M Night Shyamalan movies The Vilage and Lady in the Water. She also played Gwen Stacey in the third Spider-Man movie. We know Howard can act, and she has a certain intensity about her, so this could prove to be an interesting casting decision.

The Terminators
Chronologically, this movie (circa 2019) takes place before the future events of the first Terminator movie, therefore the Terminators are old-style and many of them will be basic metal robots. Arnie's Terminator hasn't been built yet, which is an excellent excuse for his absence and allows for the possibility that he might be able to squeeze an appearance into one or two of the upcoming movies.Josh Brolin is rumoured to be playing one of the Terminators.
The setting

Terminator 4 concept art
What can we expect from director McG?
Some tongue-in-cheek references to the "Governator"? Inflatable robot masks so that John and co can infiltrate the enemy's camp undetected? Wire-controlled kung-fu stunts performed by girls in heels? High octane car or motorbike races against the cyborgs?Whatever we get from Joseph McGinty Nichol, aka McG, the director of Charlie's Angels, it will definitely be unorthodox.
Unfortunately, the PC-13 rating means Terminator 4 will likely lose the hard edge of the previous movies.

I wish they had given Edward Furlong a chance at being John Connor again. But I did love Christian Bale in Batman. Posted August 11, 2008 |
