Terry Wogan: Icon of BBC Radio
Terry Wogan left his long running BBC Radio 2 Show on 18 December 2009, much to the dismay of his millions of fans. His extensive TV credits include his live chat show Wogan. The series ran for seven years on BBC1, and was broadcast three times a week.
Other shows include Song for Europe, The Eurovision Song Contest, Lunchtime with Wogan, Come Dancing, Celebrity Squares, New Faces and Blankety Blank.
Since 1980, Terry Wogan has also hosted the annual BBC telethon, Children in Need, which raises money for children's charities.
Wogan was awarded an honorary knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2005. After taking British citizenship that year, the knighthood was made substantive on 11 October, 2005, allowing him to use the style "Sir.

Wake Up to Wogan
One of the most popular British radio shows of all time?
In 2005, it was reported that the breakfast show Wake Up to Wogan was attracting audiences of eight million.
Then in April 2006, figures were leaked to British newspapers stating that Wogan was the highest paid BBC radio presenter at that time, with an £800,000 ($1.28m) a year salary. In an interview with Britain's Hello magazine in its 30 May 2006 issue, Wogan confirmed this was correct, saying:
The amount they said was true and I don't give a monkey's about people knowing it. Nor do I feel guilty. If you do the maths, factoring in my eight million listeners, I cost the BBC about 2p a fortnight. I think I'm cheap at the price.

Wogan repeatedly played "The Closest Thing To Crazy" on his show
Wogan is also widely credited with launching the career of singer Katie Melua after he repeatedly played her debut single, "The Closest Thing to Crazy", on his radio show Wake up to Wogan, in late 2003.
When Katie Melua performed on Children in Need in 2005, Wogan jokingly said to her:
You owe it all to me, and maybe a little to your own talent
Wogan has, however, made no secret that the credit for discovering the singer should actually go to his long time radio show producer, Paul Walters.

The end of an era

On 7 September 2009, Wogan confirmed to his listeners that he would be leaving his breakfast show Wake Up To Wogan at the end of the year with Chris Evans taking over.
The Times published an ode to Terry:
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone. Terry Wogan is abandoning his microphone
Novelist Allison Pearson commented:
Heard the one about the Irishman who reminded the British of what they could be at their best? His name was Terry Wogan.

Queen Elizabeth II
One of Terry Wogan's biggest fans
It was reported in the UK press that Queen Elizabeth II has expressed regret at Terry Wogan's announcement that he will be leaving his early morning BBC radio show. Apparently Her Majesty is very disappointed at the timing of Wogan's new show, which will be aired when she is at Church on a Sunday morning!

Terry Wogan: Chat Show Host
Terry Wogan on TV
Sir Terry was given his own chat show Wogan, which after a trial run on a midweek evening, was rescheduled for broadcast on Saturday nights from 1982 to 1984. Between 1985 and 1992, the show was shown on three weekday evenings.
Memorable moments included interviews with George Best, who was very drunk, Chevy Chase who was unusually silent, Anne Bancroft who was so terrified she gave monosyllabic answers, Ronnie Barker who announced his retirement and David Icke who claimed to be the "Son of God" . Wogan said to Icke:
They're laughing at you - they're not laughing with you.

Eight million people improve their mornings by tuning into Terry's words of wisdom on Wake up to Wogan. But is their appetite sated by this daily exposure? Not in the slightest.
So it's lucky that Terry has been known to turn his hand to the odd bit of writing. This has allowed him to shed light on such weighty matters as how to survive a wedding, what Bank Holidays are for, why Eurovision could be responsible for the Celtic Tiger, whether we should watch out for potatoes, and where exactly it all went pear-shaped ...
WHERE WAS I? gives his devoted followers exactly what they want - the unadulterated, inimitable Wogan viewpoint; a droll, forthright voice of sanity in a world gone gently mad (or is it them?). Like his broadcasting, his writing is an effortless flow of easy wit and sage opinion.
WHERE WAS I? builds up a picture not only of Terry's world, but of Terry himself - a man who somehow manages to be off the wall and on the money all at the same time. Never less than funny, and never less than frank, WHERE WAS I? demonstrates exactly how he has come to be regarded as a national treasure.
The Eurovision Song Contest
Wogan commentated for 35 years
From 1971 to 1979, Wogan regularly provided the BBC's radio commentary for the Eurovision Song Contest. However, from 1980 until 2008, he provided the BBC's television commentary and became famous for his comments, which were extremely cynical and frequently poked fun at contestants and commentators alike.
In 1998, following the UK's victory in 1997, Wogan co-hosted the contest, live from Birmingham, with Ulrika Jonsson.
Wogan is completely unknown to the majority of television viewers across Europe, however, he is well-known to many veteran broadcasters across the continent, through his work on the Eurovision Song Contest. On 5 December 2008 Wogan announced he was stepping down from the role after 35 years.
Graham Norton succeeded Wogan. Norton said during his opening comments of the 2009 Contest:
I know, I miss Terry too.

- Not long now Sir Terance, untill your dulcit tones leave the radio for good (that is if he doesnt do a "Frank Sinatra" and make a come back) I will miss driving into work with you, as I am sure will thousands more just like me (TOGS). I havn't put pen to paper befor because , well you have always been there and although Chris Evens will do a good job, he will not beat the master who is of course Sir Terry Wogan. I don't wan't this testament to sound patronising, but you will be sadly missed. Have a well earned retirement Tel, and dont get under the present Lady Wogans feet staying at home all the time, get round the golf course.
Best wishes from a loyal fan, and the kindest regards
