Terence David John Pratchett, aka Terry, was born in Buckinghamshire, England on April 28, 1948 to David and Eileen Pratchett. Pratchett got his first story published when he was only 13 years old.

The first novel Pratchett had published was in 1971 and was called The Carpet People. During the 1990s Terry was the best selling author in the UK and currently he has sold well over 60 million books.

Although Pratchett has written and co-written many books he is most well-known and loved for his fantastic Discworld series. The first of which was The Color of Magic published in 1983.

Terry's wife's name is Lyn and they have a daughter named Rhianna.

How I Discovered The Discworld

From the first time I read The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett I was literally hooked on the Discworld.

I have liked comic books since I was a kid and one of my favorite ones was DC Comics' The Sandman which was written by Neil Gaiman. Then I found out that Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett co-wrote a book called Good Omens, The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter the Witch, this book was my first encounter with Pratchett and led me to seek out more of his work.

I purchased a copy of The Color of Magic and as soon as I had finished reading it I went to a local book store and grabbed The Light Fantastic. Over the years I have read nearly every book that Terry Pratchett has written. I have loaned out books to friends and have "created" quite a few Pratchett fans.

I am being completely honest when I tell you that Terry Pratchett is my favorite author. He has such a way with words and social commentary that you can't keep yourself from laughing out loud as you read about the characters and the amazing Discworld he has created.

The Discworld Atop The Great A'tuin

The Discworld

The Discworld is flat and sits atop four huge galactic elephants named The Great T'Phon, Tubul, Jerakeen and Berilia who in turn are standing upon the Great Cosmic Turtle A'tuin of the species Chelys galactica. A'tuin travels through space. No one knows where A'tuin is going, except perhaps A'tuin herself.

The Omnian Church, Discworld's major religion, has long held that the Discworld is sphere shaped, although modern science has proven it is flat. Indeed, if the Discworld was a sphere wouldn't all the water just fall off?

The controversy over flat or sphere world was finally settled, or so some thought, by a book written by an Ephebian philosopher titled De Chelonian Mobilis, which means The Turtle Moves in Ephebian. The ideas presented in this book resulted in a war which you can read about in Small Gods

The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett

The Color of Magic is the first book in the Discworld series. Here you will learn what the Discworld is and you will get to know Rincewind. Rincewind is somewhat of a wizard, actually he dropped out of Wizard College. Rincewind is one of the biggest cowards you could ever meet, but he always finds a way to make it through.

In this story Rincewind is assigned the task of both guide and body guard for a tourist by the name of Twoflower. Twoflower wants to tour the "great" city of Ankh-Morpork, which is the most dangerous city on all of the Discworld. In fact, at the beginning of the story the city is on fire and the wizard and Twoflower are running for their lives.

One very odd thing about Rincewind is that he is always being followed by a strange trunk, referred to as the luggage, which has many legs.

The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett

The Light Fantastic This is book number two of the Discworld and continues where The Color of Magic left us hanging. The Discworld is headed for a disastrous collision with a red star which threatens to destroy all life and even the universe itself. The only thing that can save the inhabitants of Discworld and the rest of the universe are the 8 Great Magic Spells. One of those spells, the most powerful of all, is trapped within Rincewind's bumbling mind. You see, while in Wizard College he opened a certain spell book (which was absolutely forbidden to do) and the spell leaped out of the book and lodged itself in Rincewind's head.

In this book you will learn more about The Discworld and get to meet more of it's characters including Cohen the Barbarian.

Good Omens:

The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch

Good Omens was my first introduction to Terry Pratchett's great writing style. This is a hilarious look at the end of the world and Armageddon. The son of Satan (The anti-christ) is born in a small out of the way place, but right about that time a woman who is traveling through is forced to stop because her baby wants to be born. A bumbling nun gets the two babies mixed up and as a result the son of Satan is raised by a normal family while the normal child is looked after by Demons and prepared for the end of the world.

To make a long story short Armageddon and the end of the world had to be postponed. I can promise you that you will laugh when you read this great book.

Terry Pratchett is an amazing author, his books have became very collectable. I was really heart broken to hear that he has Alzheimers, no one will ever be able to take his place and create books with the same sytle that Prachett does. He's a great talent!
