All Things Testify of Christ
"Behold, my soul delighteth in proving unto my people the truth of the coming of Christ; for, for this end hath the law of Moses been given; and all things which have been given of God from the beginning of the world, unto man, are the typifying of him."
2 Nephi 11:4
This Lens will expose a sampling of the myriad of testimonies born in scripture, nature, physiology, space and eternity of our Lord and Savior Jesus, the Christ.
Sunday, March 4, 2007 I have a lesson to teach in the Hurley Ward Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We will be discovering, disclosing and sharing all the many references to our Lord and Savior in the world around us; most especially in the scriptures of our faith.
The inspiration for the lesson came from a talk, given at BYU Education Week 1997 by Todd Parker. About 24 minutes into his discussion about taking upon ourselves the whole armour of God, I heard a riviting discourse explaining that Everything Testifies of Christ.
That section caught my attention and has echoed throughout the years.

Things Testify of Christ
- Umbrella - Our relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ is like the umbrella. The better shape the umbrella is in, the more it will protect us from Satan and his constant temptations.
******************************************************************************* - Sun: Is the source of life for all things living on earth. (Christ provides resurrection/life for all men.)
******************************************************************************* - Porch light: Serves as a beacon to help us find home. (Through Christ's atonement, we can live with Heavenly Father again)
******************************************************************************* - Campfire/fireplace: Provides warmth and comfort (When we pray we can feel peace)
******************************************************************************* - Lighthouse: Protects from dangers
******************************************************************************* - Flashlight: Defines a safe path.
******************************************************************************* - Nightlight: Banishes darkness and eliminates fear (Gives knowledge--you can't have fear if you have knowledge)
******************************************************************************* - Match with candles: Light can be shared or given to others
******************************************************************************* - Car headlights: Lets us know where we are heading
******************************************************************************* - Lights on the floor in an airplane or movie theater: A guide that can be followed
******************************************************************************* - Salt & Pepper: Pour a small amount of salt on the plate. Talk about the salt being like us--pure. Sprinkle a little pepper in the salt. None of us is perfect; we all sin and become like this salt with pepper in it: impure. Is there anyway for us to clean the salt without destroying it? Bring out a plastic spoon and rub it on your clothes. Talk about the miraculous power of the Atonement. Tell the class no matter how serious our sins are, or if we think there's no way we can ever be clean again, the Atonement of the Savior makes it possible for us to be clean again. Place the spoon over the salt and pepper--the pepper will LEAP to the spoon, leaving the salt clean again.
******************************************************************************* - Yoke: Take My Yoke upon You, . . . and Ye Shall Find Rest. Jesus is saying be willing to be attached to Him and to share your load, your burden, with Him.

Points to Ponder
- What were the circumstances of Jesus' birth? (See Luke 2:7.) How did these circumstances foreshadow his mortal ministry and his atoning sacrifice?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - As he taught, Jesus made figurative use of the Temple to foreshadow his death and resurrection: "Destroy this temple," he said, "and in three days I will raise it up. "Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? "But he spake of the temple of his body." (John 2:19-21.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - At Jesus' death, the veil in the Temple's most sacred chamber, the Holy of Holies, was "rent in twain from the top to the bottom." (Matt. 27:51.) For generations, only the high priest had been permitted to pass through the veil and enter the symbolic presence of God-and even he had that privilege only once a year. But through his death, Jesus rent that partition, signifying, among other things, that all people could reach God's presence. (See Paul's explanation of the symbolism, Heb. 9:11-14; Heb. 10:19-22.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Indeed, all truth, both spiritual and temporal, testifies of Him. When we learn to read the "signs, and wonders, and types, and shadows" (Mosiah 3:15) properly, with the eyes of faith, we will realize that all of history, all of science, all of nature, all divinely revealed knowledge of any sort, testifies of Him. He is the very personification of truth and light, of life and love, of beauty and goodness. (Elder Alexander B. Morrison)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - The uniqueness and centrality of the sacrifice of the coming Lord was commemorated through ordinances like the sin and trespass offerings (see Lev. 4-6) and especially the rites of the annual Day of Atonement (see Lev. 16). Animal sacrifice became the temporal means by which the Israelites kept faith with God and looked forward to forgiveness for their sins.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Many of the events in the Old Testament also pointed to the ultimate sacrifice. When the Israelites were dying of serpent bites, Moses lifted up a brass serpent in the camp of Israel to save them. Those who looked with faith at the figure lived. (See Num. 21:6-9.) Thus, Jesus taught Nicodemus, "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Sometimes we fault the Jews of Jesus' time for not understanding the prophecies or for confusing prophecies of Christ's second coming with those of His first coming. But in the Old Testament, prophecies of the Lord's coming in glory abound, while those of His mortal ministry are relatively few. And rather than being clear and open, they are veiled in the richly figurative and symbolic language, in harmony with the principle of protecting sacred things from abuse by the irreverent. In general, only those who understand the plan of salvation or are familiar with Jesus' mortal ministry can understand the meaning of the messianic prophecies of the Old Testament.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Prototypes and intimations can also be found in the symbolism of ancient Israel's sacred ceremonies. For example, the scapegoat and purification rites of the Day of Atonement signify Christ's salvation wrought by suffering and death (Heb. 9:7-14). Further, the Feast of Tabernacles, with its harvest and light associations, teaches of the Messianic reign (2 Bar. 29:4-8; John 8:12). (by Lenet Hadley Read)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - The Pearl of Great Price also teaches that all creation bears record of Christ (Moses 6:63). This includes the sun, which points to him, the light of the world (see D&C 88:5-13). Similarly, every revealed ordinance exhibits a symbolic linkage to one element or another of Jesus' ministry. For example, just as the daily sacrifices of Jerusalem's temple foreshadowed Christ's sacrifice (Heb. 7:26-28), so Latter-day Saints see gospel ordinances as pointing to him and to the way back into his presence. (by Lenet Hadley Read)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - The sun is a type of Jesus the son of God. It sets in the evening in the color red. This symbolizes his shed blood at calvary and his death on the cross. It rises in glory in the morning to symbolize his resurrection to glory.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - the ceremonial aspects of the law which governed Israel's approach to God and their worship of Him (Exodus 24-31) were but types and shadows of Jesus Christ. They were preparatory in character, and He is the reality to which they pointed (see e.g. Hebrews 10:1-10).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - The ministry of Israel's high priest was a shadow of the ministry of Jesus Christ, the true "High Priest over the house of God" (Hebrews 9:6-12; 10:21). The lamb which was slain on Israel's altar for their sins was a shadow of Jesus Christ, the true "Lamb of God" (John 1:29). The altar upon which Israel's lamb was slain was a shadow of Jesus Christ upon His cross, the true altar (Hebrews 13:10). The Passover sacrifice upon which Israel feasted was a shadow of Jesus Christ, the true "Passover [who] was sacrificed for us" (1 Corinthians 5:7). The Sabbath on which Israel rested was a shadow of Jesus Christ, the true Sabbath (Colossians 2:16f). These are but a few examples which prove that Jesus Christ is the truth which the law foreshadowed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Types or symbols of Christ: Abel offered the firstlings of his flock, Gen. 4: 4 (Moses 5: 20). Take thine only son Isaac, and offer him for an offering, Gen. 22: 1-13 (Jacob 4: 5). The Lord commanded the children of Israel to sacrifice lambs without blemish, Ex. 12: 5, 21, 46 (Num. 9: 12; John 1: 29; 19: 33; 1 Pet. 1: 19; Rev. 5: 6). This is the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat, Ex. 16: 2-15 (John 6: 51). Smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people might drink, Ex. 17: 6 (John 4: 6-14; 1 Cor. 10: 1-4). The goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities, Lev. 16: 20-22 (Isa. 53: 11; Mosiah 14: 11; 15: 6-9). Moses lifted up a serpent of brass to save those who look at it, Num. 21: 8-9 (John 3: 14-15; Alma 33: 19; Hel. 8: 14-15). Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days, Jonah 1: 17 (Matt. 12: 40). This thing is a similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotten of the Father, Moses 5: 4-8.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - In the New Testament and elsewhere many various symbols have been used for Jesus Christ, varying from a rock, a sure foundation, the morning star, to such things as bread, water or a vine.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Are you aware that Israel leaving Egypt, going through the wilderness, and getting back into Caanan is a symbol of leaving a telestial world, going through a terrestrial millennium, and getting back into a celestial world? Notice the types. As Israel left Egypt (Egypt is a symbol of the telestial world), they went through the desert (a symbol of the Millennium; the earth, during the Millennium, will be a terrestrial world), and then they returned home. (Todd B. Parkerm Provo, Utah: Maxwell Institute, . P. N/A)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - One of the barriers to understanding the world around us is failure to notice what is being conveyed to us in its symbols. In truth, creation exists as an immense and cohesive metaphor. It is said that no truth can be hidden from one who is able to read (the symbols of) creation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - How did they [the Israelites] get out of Egypt? There were some plagues. The first plague was when Moses turned the water to blood. What was Jesus' first miracle? He turned water to wine. The last plague Moses brought on was the death of the firstborn; Jesus' last miracle was the Resurrection of the Firstborn. So what preceded Israel leaving Egypt, when they left the telestial world to get into the terrestrial world, was some plagues. What's going to happen before this world leaves its telestial status and goes into the millennial terrestrial world? It will be preceded by plagues as well. (Todd B. Parkerm Provo, Utah: Maxwell Institute, . P. N/A)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Notice, as Israel left Egypt, they did it at the time of Passover. Why were they allowed to go? Because of the death of Pharoah's firstborn. But they did something prior to that. They took a lamb-and notice the symbol of the firstborn male, unblemished, i.e., with no broken bones They slew this lamb and put the blood on the lintels of their doors so the Destroying Angel passed over them and killed the firstborn of the Egyptians. So, the blood of the lamb saved Israel from physical death, as the blood of the Lamb will save us from spiritual death. (Todd B. Parkerm Provo, Utah: Maxwell Institute, . P. N/A)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - I don't know if you have thought about it, but Jesus is the Lamb of God. When Jesus was born, to whom did the angels come? They came to the shepherds. Why the shepherds? Because it was the shepherds' job to keep track of which lamb was the firstborn, because the sacrificial lamb had to be a symbol of the Firstborn, which was Jesus. (Todd B. Parkerm Provo, Utah: Maxwell Institute, . P. N/A)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - When Jesus was on the cross, he was the Lamb of God, and he was being killed. As he was on the cross, the Jews were killing lambs for the Passover, unaware that all the lambs they were slaughtering were really a symbol for the Lamb of God, who was on the cross. This was a symbol of the death of the Lamb at the Passover. (Todd B. Parkerm Provo, Utah: Maxwell Institute, . P. N/A)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Now, how do we get out of this telestial world into a better world? How did Israel get out of a telestial world? Well, Moses is a symbol of Christ, and he led them out of this telestial world. (Pharaoh was a symbol of Satan and all his hosts.) So where does Moses take Israel? He takes them to the edge of the Red Sea. And what do they do? What are they following? They are following a pillar of light. When they get to the Red Sea, the pillar of light came around Israel and gave light to Israel as it went through the Red Sea. It was darkness to the Egyptians, holding them back. What did the Lord do on the first day of creation? He separated the light from the darkness. And then what did Israel do? They went through the sea. What did the Lord do on the second day? He separated the land from the water. Why did Israel go through the Red Sea? It was a symbol of baptism. They had to be saved by water and by fire. The water is the symbol of baptism, and the fire, or pillar, is the Holy Ghost. Just as they were saved by water and by fire, we are saved by water and by fire. We need to have baptism and the Holy Ghost to get us out of this telestial world, back home. (Todd B. Parkerm Provo, Utah: Maxwell Institute, . P. N/A)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - So Israel went through the Red Sea and then they got into the wilderness, a symbol of the Millennium. What did they eat while they were there? They ate manna. What is manna? It's bread from heaven. It was a symbol again. It was a symbol of whom? Christ, the bread of life. Where was He born? He was born in Bethlehem. Bethlehem is "the house of bread," and that is not by coincidence. What did they drink? They drank water. Where did the water come from? Moses hit the rock. What is the rock? The rock is Christ. In 1 Corinthians 10:1-4 it says they were saved by the manna and the water, the spiritual food and water they had in the wilderness. (Todd B. Parkerm Provo, Utah: Maxwell Institute, . P. N/A)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - So, they were out in the wilderness. They stayed there forty years. Why? Because Moses lost his compass? No! Because forty is a symbol of purification. And you can get the children of Israel out of Egypt, but you can't get Egypt out of Israel. They had to have the older generation die off and the younger generation led in. They are led in by whom? By Joshua. Joshua is the Hebrew word for the Greek word Jesus. So they went into the promised land, and where did they go? They had to go through the Jordan River. Why the Jordan River? (And by the way, they went through the Jordan River at Passover. You can check the Old Testament. It gives month, day, and year. They went through at Passover.) Why did they go through the river? Because you have to be born again to go into the promised land, because all things testify of Christ. (Todd B. Parkerm Provo, Utah: Maxwell Institute, . P. N/A)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Think of the other symbols. Why do you go to bed at night? Because you are tired? No! You die every night. Why do you get up? Because it is time to go? No! It is a symbol of the resurrection. That is why you have to have the morning and the afternoon of the first resurrection. All things testify of Christ. (Todd B. Parkerm Provo, Utah: Maxwell Institute, . P. N/A)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - All the prophets in the Old Testament testify of Christ. Think of Joseph of Egypt. He was a shepherd. Jesus was the Good Shepherd. Do Joseph's brothers like him? No, they put him in a pit. Jesus was in a tomb. Tradition has it that Joseph was in the pit three days. He came out of the pit, and he got on the right hand of Pharaoh. Jesus came out of the tomb, and he went on the right hand of God. Then the brothers came down to get corn in Egypt. What happened? Did they recognize Joseph? He said, "Hey, it's me. It's Joseph." When Christ was resurrected and appeared in the upper room, did they recognize him. No. He said, "It's me. Handle me and see." And there were eleven brothers, and there were eleven apostles. So Joseph is a type of Christ. Moses is a type of Christ. (Todd B. Parkerm Provo, Utah: Maxwell Institute, . P. N/A)

Nice lens and interesting - Keep up the good work, Posted August 23, 2007 |
I am constantly amazed at how the Lord is in every detail of our lives. He gives us the freedom to choose our paths and waits patiently until we maximize our full potential, then the exact moment when our puny strength can not pull us and we are about to fall, He catches us with tenderness and mercy
