The Texas Flag - A unique History

Texas has led a storied history up to today. The famous state was a part of Mexico as well as its own nation before joining the United States. The history of this journey is long and intricate, so there is no way to cover it all here. Instead, let's focus on the history of the symbol of Texas: it's flag

The First Flag of Texas: The Burnet Flag

The Lonestar State's Original Flag

Original Texas FlagThe First flag of Texas, adopted after Texas declared Independence from Mexico in 1836, is often called the Burnet Flag.

It has a solid Blue field with a yellow star in the center. This flag was also commonly made with a white star at the time. This is the flag that Texas received its 'Lone Star' nickname from.

When Texas Became a State in 1845, the Lone Star flag became the official state flag. In 1879, all of the former laws of the Republic of Texas were repealed, including the official flag. As a result of this, Texas was without a State Flag until 1933, when the current design was officially adopted.

The Modern Texas Flag

The Official Texas Flag of Today

In 1933, when Texas adopted the current flag design with two horizontal bars and a vertical blue stripe, they defined the colors as 'azure blue' and 'blood red' . Unfortunately (or Fortunately) these colors have no definition under United State Law. Therefore, there was a large variation in color styles and stripe sizes all the way until the flag description was changed in 1933 to the following language:

The state flag consists of a rectangle with a width to length ratio of two to three containing: (1) a blue vertical stripe one-third the entire length of the flag wide, and two equal horizontal stripes, the upper stripe white, the lower red, each two-thirds the entire length of the flag long; and (2) a white, regular five-pointed star in the center of the blue stripe, oriented so that one point faces upward, and of such a size that the diameter of a circle passing through the five points of the star is equal to three-fourths the width of the blue stripe.

The Colors were Changed to 'Old Glory Red' and 'Old Glory Blue' which match the US flag and are official colors in the US.

Can the Texas Flag hang as high as the US Flag?

The Texas State flag can fly just as high!

Many people believe that the Texas flag is often flown at the same height as the US flag because the state used to be its own Nation. In fact, the flag of any state can be flown just as high as the US flag!

From Wikipedia:

Allegedly, Texas has this right inherently (as a former independent nation) or because it negotiated special provisions when it joined the Union (this version has been stated as fact on a PBS website [3]). However, the legend is false. Neither the Joint Resolution for Annexing Texas to the United States nor the Ordinance of Annexation contain any provisions regarding flags. According to the United States Flag Code, any state flag can be flown at the same height as the U.S. flag; the U.S. flag should be on its right
