Mums the word!

Chrysanthemums are a great fall plant to boost your patio color or line your perennial or even your annual beds. They come in many colors and will give you a few years of re-growth if so desired. Mums tend to show better if planted in mass and work great with plantings of dianthus or pansies.

Drought Busters!

Plants that withstand low water usage.

The summer is probably the worst time to plant. And with the drought that has been upon us for the last several months, you need to be selective in your plant selection decisions.

For the DFW area here are some recommendations:

Annuals: lantana,vinca,pentas,blue daze
Perennials: salvia's,coreopsis,lambs ear,daylily
Shrubs: indian hawthorn,wax myrtle,yaupon,yucca
Trees: desert willow, thornless male honey locust

When planting these, you will need to water at least once a day with a slow drip until established (about 10-14 days.) Then, you can cut back to 2-3 times per week until Fall or some rainfall.

Spring is around the Corner!

Average Last Freeze Date....

March 17th is the average last freeze date for the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Its time to fertilize the onions and prepare the annual beds for planting. The weather has been great with plenty of moisture. The garden centers are stocking up getting ready for spring.

Onions!

Fall plantings

The best time to plant onions is one month before the last average frost date. For Denton county, that planting date would be around the last week of February.

The best short day plant in my opinion would be the TX 1015-Y Supersweet. It stores better.

Try Brown's Omaha Plant Farms, Inc for your online onions at http://www.bopf.com

Food for Rabbits!

Due to the lack of water last year, rabbits and other animals have put themselves in survival mode. They are eating everything in site. This is a list of the various plants that have been eaten in my yard.
  1. indian hawthorne
  2. dwarf burford holly
  3. pansy
  4. dianthus
  5. red hot poker
  6. rose bush
