A Little Detective Work

Learn to "dig" for information

Perhaps one of the most frustrating situations is when you finally find a headstone, hoping to get the birth & death information...the only dates are the years.

Who puts just the years?!

Well...don't worry. It will take some digging but you can find the information by looking at the death certificate.

BUT warning! The information was only as good as the informant knew. Sometimes the dates are wrong. Just use it as another tool and also verify the information from two other sources.

Verifying information by other sources is always a good idea any way.

Soundex? What's a Soundex?!

For me, one of the most confusing parts of research is the Soundex.

"an index based on phonetics, with consonants being assigned one of six numbers, and the surname being converted to a four-character code" -- How Stuff Works - Genealogy

"Use of the 1920, 1910, 1900, and 1880 censuses - usually the first used by beginning American genealogists - are aided by a unique microfilmed card index to some of them. It is known as the Soundex. In it surnames are coded from the way they sound rather than how they are spelled.

The Soundex code consists of a letter (always the first letter of the surname) and three numbers." -- RootsWeb's Guide to Tracing Family Trees

On Robert Ragan's website, he offers some wonderful information in PDF format. (You'll need to install the Adobe Reader to view it.)

There is no Historic spot that grips our Hearts and stirs our sympathies as does a Burial Ground. It is not only because it is in itself a land-mark, set apart with established boundaries for a fixed purpose, but that it is the tie that links us to those who have gone before us, and a symbol of the immortality that is our hope. -- Estella Bradburn Fisher, Memorial Day May 30, 1930 address given at Erie Street Cemetery for the National Society New England Women, Cleveland Colony.

DNA at the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree

In interviews conducted at the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree in Burbank, California, Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak and Diahan Southard discuss the current and future use of DNA in genealogy. Trace Your Roots with DNA: Using Genetic Tests to Explore Your Family Tree, Megan's latest book (co-authored with Ann Turner, M.D.), has been featured in Newsweek, The New York Times, on NPR, and in the Book of the Month Club. Megan is chief family historian with Ancestry.com and a principal in RootsTelevision.com. Diahan Southard is a molecular genealogist with Sorenson Genomics. Interviews were conducted and filmed at the 2007 Southern California Genealogy Jamboree in Burbank, California by Jim Killeen and the folks at GoogleMe. A special thank you to Snehal Patel for putting this together.
