A Little Detective Work
Learn to "dig" for information
Who puts just the years?!
Well...don't worry. It will take some digging but you can find the information by looking at the death certificate.
BUT warning! The information was only as good as the informant knew. Sometimes the dates are wrong. Just use it as another tool and also verify the information from two other sources.
Verifying information by other sources is always a good idea any way.

Soundex? What's a Soundex?!
"an index based on phonetics, with consonants being assigned one of six numbers, and the surname being converted to a four-character code" -- How Stuff Works - Genealogy
"Use of the 1920, 1910, 1900, and 1880 censuses - usually the first used by beginning American genealogists - are aided by a unique microfilmed card index to some of them. It is known as the Soundex. In it surnames are coded from the way they sound rather than how they are spelled.
The Soundex code consists of a letter (always the first letter of the surname) and three numbers." -- RootsWeb's Guide to Tracing Family Trees
On Robert Ragan's website, he offers some wonderful information in PDF format. (You'll need to install the Adobe Reader to view it.)

In interviews conducted at the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree in Burbank, California, Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak and Diahan Southard discuss the current and future use of DNA in genealogy. Megan is chief family historian with Ancestry.com and a principal in RootsTelevision.com. Diahan Southard is a molecular genealogist with Sorenson Genomics.
