Importance of Advertising
Importance of AdvertisingSpending on advertising is huge. One often quoted statistic by market research firm ZenithOptimedia estimates that worldwide spending on advertising exceeds (US) $400 billion. This level of spending supports thousands of companies and millions of jobs. In fact, in many countries most media outlets, such as television, radio and newspapers, would not be in business without revenue generated through the sale of advertising.
While worldwide advertising is an important contributor to economic growth, individual marketing organizations differ on the role advertising plays. For some organizations little advertising may be done, instead promotional money is spent on other promotion options such a personal selling through a sales team. For some smaller companies advertising may consist of occasional advertisement and on a very small scale, such as placing small ads in the classified section of a local newspaper.
But most organizations, large and small, that rely on marketing to create customer interest are engaged in consistent use of advertising to help meet marketing objectives. This includes regularly developing advertising campaigns, which involve a series of decisions for planning, creating, delivering and evaluating an advertising effort
What is Advertising?
What is Advertising?Advertising is a non-personal form of promotion that is delivered through selected media outlets that, under most circumstances, require the marketer to pay for message placement. Advertising has long been viewed as a method of mass promotion in that a single message can reach a large number of people. But, this mass promotion approach presents problems since many exposed to an advertising message may not be within the marketer's target market, and thus, may be an inefficient use of promotional funds. However, this is changing as new advertising technologies and the emergence of new media outlets offer more options for targeted advertising.
Advertising also has a history of being considered a one-way form of marketing communication where the message receiver (i.e., target market) is not in position to immediately respond to the message (e.g., seek more information). This too is changing. For example, in the next few years technologies will be readily available to enable a television viewer to click a button to request more details on a product seen on their favorite TV program. In fact, it is expected that over the next 10-20 years advertising will move away from a one-way communication model and become one that is highly interactive.
Another characteristic that may change as advertising evolves is the view that advertising does not stimulate immediate demand for the product advertised. That is, customers cannot quickly purchase a product they see advertised. But as more media outlets allow customers to interact with the messages being delivered the ability of advertising to quickly stimulate demand will improve.
Types of Advertising
Video Advertising - This growing market is basically going straight up. Since Google bought YouTube, advertisers have been itching to get into video ads and content publishers are answering their interest.Co-Op Advertising - is one of the best ways for the small business
owner to get the message out. In this type of advertising the
manufacturer absorbs a portion of the cost and can also supply
all the artwork for the ads.
Word of Mouth

When customers are happy with something, they'll tell their friends, family and neighbors. Word of mouth PR is the cheapest form of advertising, but relies on the assumption that the person doing the talking is trustworthy.
Newspapers

Newspaper advertising takes the form of classified service ads, display ads, inserts (usually flyers), press releases and advertorials, which are feature stories/business profiles done as a courtesy (but not an endorsement) for the paper's advertisers.
Magazine Ads

Magazine ads are much more expensive and glamorous than newspaper slots, especially if the ad appears on the inside of the front and back covers. The more prestigious the magazine, the more likely the ads are designed by PR firms.
Public Service Announcements

PSAs (also referred to as "talking heads") are simplistic radio and TV spots of 15, 30 and 60 seconds that promote nonprofit organizations. There is no charge for the air time.
Commercials

Commercials are 30 to 60 seconds in length, are formatted as problem/solution scenarios and are both expensive to produce and to air--depending on the time slot in which they run (for example, the Super Bowl).
Internet

Websites, blogs, podcasts, banners, pop-ups, text ads, email and chat rooms are all cyber platforms that allow promotional content to be available 24/7.
Direct Mail
Sales letters, postcards, brochures and press kits are hard copy marketing tools that--in addition to their reproduction costs--require postage and the purchase of mailing lists.

Social Network Advertising
There are three major classifications of Social Network Advertising:
- Direct Advertising that is based on your network of friends - This can be the most effective format but also causes the most controversy. An example is the Facebook beacon project.[5] Based on an action your friend has taken, you might see a message in your news feed saying 'Bob has just bought a 'RadioHead CD from MusicWorld'. This can be an extremely effective mode as often people make decisions to purchase something or do something based on their close group of friends. However, there is also a lot of controversy surrounding this as it can be considered exploiting the personal relationships you have with your friends and also raises privacy concerns.
- Direct Advertising placed on your social networking site - This is a more traditional form of web advertising that is minimally, like midget like, effective. Just like you see banner ads on many other sites, this is a similar concept, except on a social networking site. You can see these - for example - as a brick in the top right of MySpace pages, or as a banner on the left of Facebook profiles and so on. There are two differences however - One is that these social networks can take advantage of demographic data on your profile and hence target the ad directly to you. Secondly, these types of ads can also be placed by individual developers on their application pages through ad networks such as SponsorPay, AdParlor or Offerpal. They have access to the same data and can generate income for application developers giving them further motivation to create apps and giving advertisers a more engaging way to reach out to these social networking users.
- Indirect Advertising by creating 'groups' or 'pages' - This is an innovative marketing technique in which a company will create a 'page' or 'group' that users can choose to join. They will use this to build up 'subscribers' or 'fans' and use this to market a contest, a new product, or simply just to increase brand awareness. These groups can quickly grow in numbers of subscribers which can become a very effective marketing tool.
