What Does TGIF (Really) Mean?

The Real Meaning of TGIF...

If it's Monday and you are ready for Friday, it's time to change your life! Why be miserable working for the man when you can be happy working for yourself? When you become successful working for yourself, TGIF no longer matters because every day represents personal freedom! The abbreviation, "TGIF," widely stands for "Thank God it's Friday," or "Thank Goodness it's Friday," but what people really mean by TGIF is, "I want to quit my job!"

Stop Living for TGIF and the Weekend!

Why do people live for Friday and the weekend? My belief is that Friday and the weekend represents freedom! The weekend is usually time off for those who are caught up in some form of the 9 to5/rat-race/wage-slave existence that seems to be rampant in the conventional workforce in the United States. I wonder if people in other industrialized, high-paced countries look forward to Friday and the weekend as much as those in the USA do.

Can there be anything better than Friday and the weekend...other than being independently wealthy due to winning the lottery or acquiring millions from inheritance? I believe there is! Winning the lottery or inheriting a huge sum of money would be nice, but it's not likely for most us. Instead, what really matters is doing what you enjoy all the time. Or at least most of the time! If you are caught up in a job or career path you don't enjoy, then Monday is always going to arrive unwelcomed!

To be honest with you, I also look forward to the weekends. By day, I work a job like most people do because the job is my one and only source of consistent and significant income. But during the evenings and weekends, I spend time at my computer producing content here at Squidoo and other places as a source of internet income. So far, the income is just a trickle, but I do believe that momentum from continuous effort will naturally bring greater and more consistent results. For me, the time off from my job represents freedom to work on my escape plan from the conventional workforce. An escape from traditional types of work means making money on my own terms and enjoying life everyday...not just on Friday and the weekend!

So what about you? Could you imagine getting up in the morning feeling refreshed and excited for what you are about to do because you live and earn income on your own terms, doing what you are passionate about? To really enjoy life, you have to escape whatever is holding you back!

“You long for Friday because your job represents incarceration and your weekend, probation.”

The Reason Friday = Happiness...

When you go to "the job" on Friday, do you hear at least one of these expressions of joy for the arrival of Friday?

  • IT'S FRIDAY!

  • HAPPY FRIDAY!

  • I'M GLAD IT'S FRIDAY!

  • WOO HOO! IT'S FRIDAY!

  • TGIF!

Why does the arrival of Friday create so much excitement? Is it because most people are incarcerated by their employer and Friday represents the beginning of a two-day probation?

What if the Day of the Week Didn't Matter?

Why is so much positive attention given to Friday and the weekend? You generally don't hear people expressing joy for Monday, Tuesday, or any other days except Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. For most people, Friday leads into a weekend break from a job that probably brings feelings of unhappiness, aggravation, and the like. But what if you were happy in your occupation? Would the day of the week really matter if you were not shackled by your employer or career situation?

If you are happy in your job/career, does the day of the week really matter?

Those who long for Friday and the weekend are unhappy in their job/career. The arrival of Friday and the weekend represents freedom from a boss, coworkers, unpleasant work, and anything else about the job that represents unhappiness. If one is happy in their job/career, happiness is experienced any day of the week.

Longing-for-Friday Phrases in the Workplace

Wishing for Friday appears
in these common phrases as well...

It's a Monday.
It's Hump Day!
It's Almost Friday!

“There's no such thing as a "long-enough" weekend if your job is the source of your unhappiness!”

Things People Say When the Weekend is Over

When Monday rolls around, you can expect to hear at least one of the following phrases from people who are unhappy in their job(s).
  • The weekend wasn't long enough.
  • It's a Monday.
  • Is it Friday yet?
  • I wish it was Friday.
  • I'm ready for Friday!

Working for the Man is NOT the Only Reality!

Oh, I wish it was Friday. Is it Friday yet? I'm tired. I wanna go home! Does this sound familiar? If you earn your income by working for the man, you've probably heard your co-workers expressing their misery by using these common phrases. Maybe you feel this way too! I certainly do!

For most of us wage slaves, Friday seems to be a magical day. The arrival of Friday always brings expressions of joy for the upcoming weekend. But why should Friday be the highlight of the week if Friday is just another day at the job? The real relief doesn't start until Saturday! And then you typically have only two days off before you have to start the whole dreadful work week again on Monday.

I have to wonder if those who dream about Friday really like their jobs. Instead of wishing for Friday the whole week, why not give up your job for something that will bring satisfaction every day of the week? Of course it isn't that simple for everyone to up and quit a miserable job, but I think you get my point! If your job brings nothing but misery, it's time to pursue other opportunities. Working for the man is not the only reality!

A Job is NOT the ONLY Way to Earn Income!

Work for Yourself, NOT for the Man!

Have you wondered why you are always ready for Friday? Maybe you are not happy working for the man! A job is not the only way to earn income. Why should you continue slaving away for your employer if it's just a cycle of incarceration followed by a weekend of probation? You can be thankful for every day (not just Fridays) if you are happy in what you do! Maybe it is time to be your own boss and work for yourself? If you have a dream of working for yourself, you'll need some guidance to help you turn your dream into reality. These are some self-employment resources you may find helpful!

10 Reasons I Want to Quit My Job

When the end of the work week finally rolls around, do you catch yourself saying, "Thank God it's Friday"? If you do, it could mean you really don't like the path your life is taking. Why should you live for Friday...or even the weekend for that matter? It shouldn't matter what day of the week it is if you truly enjoy what you do with your life. Nevertheless, TGIF is the status quo for so many people who are caught up in the 9 to 5 wage-slave existence.

I am tired of anxiously awaiting the weekend for a break from working for the man. I truly believe there are better ways to earn income than by working a job. You still have to work but with the right knowledge, skills, and support, you can work smarter rather than harder by quitting that job and becoming your own boss! I strive to make this dream a reality and these are the 10 reasons I want to quit my job. Do you feel this way too? If so, what is the #1 reason YOU want to quit your job?

Songs About Workplace Stress

I venture to say the majority of people who work a job for a living do so regretfully. Not everyone is quick to openly admit that but words speak volumes for how people feel about working for the man. Take it from Dolly Parton, Johnny Paycheck, Donna Summer, Rush, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and many others who wrote the biggest hits in the music industry about workplace stress and the woes of being a wage slave!

Songs about workplace stress include:

Take This Job and Shove It - Johnny Paycheck
9 to 5 - Dolly Parton
Sixteen Tons - Tennessee Ernie Ford
Working Man - Rush
She Works Hard for the Money - Donna Summer
