Modern day prostitution in Thailand has been blamed on the Chinese immigrants as it was this group of Bangkok workers that established the first brothel district. Although having only Chinese women work in these brothels the idea of prostitution gradually spread through out the rest of Thailand.

Although made illegal in 1950's it has been estimated that there are over 2 million women offering sex services and can now be found in just about every village, town and city throughout the Kingdom of Thailand. These prostitutes now not only come from Thailand but include women from Europe and Russia.

During the Vietnam War prostitution in Thailand changed. The women working in the sex industry so far only had the local Thai men to sell to but now with a huge influx of foreign soldiers they had a whole new market to work on. Based mainly in Bangkok and Pattaya these soldiers created what is today called the Thailand bar girls.

Although considered mainly a tourist trade prostitution to foreigners is a relatively small part of the over all level of the industry in Thailand. It has been estimated that only 5% of the Thai sex trade is seen by foreingers in the bars, massage parlous and the like. The other 95% operate in brothels and barbershops not know to the foreigners.

Throughout Thailand in all major tourist destinations you will find bars catering to foreigners. The girls who work in these bars do just that, they work like everyone else does in their job. Like many other jobs this type of employment has targets to meet, quotas to keep and money to make. Although working freelance the girls earn their money from a percentage of the drinks bought on their behalf. The number of drinks a girl is bought is one of the targets they must fullfill to keep their jobs.

If a bar girl would like to leave during their working hours there is a 'penalty' to pay and it is always the customer that forks out cash to pay this penalty. In theory the amount is an estimation of what the girl would expect to make in the time she is not in the bar. In practice this penalty is called a bar fine and it is usually a fixed amount to have the bar girl leave with their customer.

If money changes hands between the customer and these Thailand bar girls for services then the girl gets to keep all of this money. This amount is often negotiable and will be worked out between the girl and her customer. This transaction is between the girl and the customer, the mama-san takes no cut and does not get involved in the process.

Every year there are thousands of people who travel to Thailand to experience the paradise of the islands or the culture of the Thai people but there are also a large number of people who spend their holidays to Thailand searching for a companion. This may last anything from a few hours in a nearby hotel or the girls may accompany them for the full holiday.
