Why say thank you to other Lensmasters?

Thanks for the help? There is so much good advice about lensmaking to be found on Squidoo, SquidU and all the related Squidthis and Squidthat websites, so it is only right that having benefitted from all this advice, it was about time I did something to acknowledge this.

One of the reasons for publishing this lens is to say thank you and another is to try and give something back to the people who have helped me.

So here's to everyone who has so generously shared their knowledge and experience!

Thanks for the help!

Thank you to all the lensmasters who take the time to pass on the enormous amount of helpful (and free, WooHoo!) information so that newbies like me can approach the task of making their first lenses with a lot more confidence and a lot less trepidation!

Thanks seems such
a small word

'I'll never forget it'

I am going to do a very dangerous thing here and try to list the lenses that really helped me, in my first few weeks sailing around the Sea of Squidoo. I know I won't manage to remember all of them and I will add to the list as time goes on and my memory is jogged.

And why the featured lenses mean so much to me

Thank you Debnet. Your comments in my Guestbook on my Bullying at Primary School lens gave me the confidence to continue making lenses. Deb was also the first Lensmaster to join my Children and Parenting Group and she got Lens of the Day with Fish and Chips. This lens really inspired me to start writing more personal lenses.

Poddys is famous for his Wall of Fame - are you on it yet? Poddys is one of the most supportive Lensmasters I have met on Squidoo.

Thank you Seth - Squidoo has been the most amazing therapy for me as I adjust my life to cope with a debillitating medical condition. Even when I am better I will still keep Squidooing.

Thank You, Geometrical Motif

tdove is the ultimate Group Master. She visits and comments on every lens that is submitted to the G Rated Lens Factory. What a confidence boost to any Newbie! Thank you tdove.

The Chef's lensography gave me the idea to put a YouTube music video of one of my favourite songs at the beginning of my lensography so that people could listen to it while they read about me.

Jaguar Julie supports so many Lensmasters and she makes great lenses too.

Thank you Megan and the HQ team for making my lens Auditory Processing Disorder Lens of the Day, not once but twice!

Thank you Katinka - also known as Spirituality - you said in a blog that it is good to say Thank you. It's what gave me the idea to make this lens.

Update: 21 February 2009
Lensmaster Ener-G contacted me a few weeks ago with some help. She's had "a feeling" about something. I am not going into more details at the moment but I will update on here once I have done something that she recommended........

Thank you Angels

I am so lucky that my lenses have been visited and blessed by the Squidangels. Each visit is treasured.

Just ONE Squidtip

So many to choose from!

If you could give anyone just ONE tip when they publish their first lens, what would it be?

Lots of things immediately come to my mind when I consider this question:

  • Do I say they should read as many "How to Squidoo" lenses as they can?
  • Do I caution them about spamming?
  • Do I urge them to join in the forums on SquidU?
  • Do I suggest they submit their lens to as many groups as possible?
  • Do I recommend they visit all the helpful lenses that have been written about HTML?
  • Do I tell them that promoting their lens is the key to increasing lensrank?

  • What a dilemma!

So what is my ONE Squidtip?

Sometimes the simplest things are the most helpful

Most Lensmasters will agree that making a Hyperlink is some of the most commonly used HTML code. In his lens Basic HTML, Lensmaster N376 explains how to make a Hyperlink.

Every good Lensmaster knows that every lens should have hyperlinks to other lenses and webpages that have information that is relevant to the topic being discussed. Apart from giving visitors more sources of information, Google and the other Search Engines like to see lots of links to other pages on the web.

To make a Hyperlink you simply type the code as follows:

    <a href="http://www.Squidoo.com">Squidoo</a>

    which will become

    Squidoo

But PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, do not stop there!

N376 also tells you about: target="_blank"

The code would then look like this:

    <a href="http://www.Squidoo.com" target="_blank">Squidoo</a>
(Note: there is a space after the "m" of com and before the "t" of target)

    which will also become

    Squidoo

but there is a difference in what happens when you click on it to follow the link.........

    Why add target="_ blank"?

The page you are linking to will open in a new window, leaving open the Squidoo lens that you are reading. Omitting target="_blank" means that as you open a new webpage, the lens you were visiting will close. Before you know it, you have clicked on lots of links and then you will lose track of where you originally started - it's happens to me a lot as I navigate around the sea of lenses that is Squidoo and I often lose track!

It's a bit like reading a page in a book, you might flick ahead a few pages but unless you have kept your finger on the original page you were reading or used a bookmark then you will have to spend time finding where you originally started.

A more modern analogy is driving somewhere new and rummaging around in your car for the Road Atlas as your SatNav fails!

    What's your favourite Squidtip?

Remember, you can list just one

What is the best Squidtip anyone ever gave you? Make sure you acknowledge the help you have been given by adding a link to either the Lensmasters Profile or the lens that helped you in the "Who would you like to thank?" Plexo.

    Using "target_blank" in Hyperlinks

Spirituality - a Lensmaster who gives so much

There are so many Lensmasters who don't just support each other, they will share their expertise. Spirituality, also known as Katinka is one such Lensmaster and in January 2009, she made me an offer I just could not refuse.

I had already been interviewed by Katinka for her Squidtop blog - click on the pic below to read what I had to say - but then she contacted me about my "lens experiment".

I had just published Lose weight with a wheat free diet and I posted about it in my blog on Squidtop. Katinka and I also exchanged Tweets about it on Twitter and I then had an email asking if I would mind if she reviewed my lens and then blogged about it. Would I mind? What an offer! Of course I didn't mind, although we did a tiny bit of negotiation as to what she would say in the intro. The results are here on:

Weight loss lens pulled apart and Reviewing AJ2008 - Linkbuilding.

It does not matter whether or not Lose weight with a wheat free diet does well, I have learned a huge amount through Katinka's clear and at times patient explanantions.

    Thank you Katinka!

A special thank you to Spirituality

Two lenses I re-visit from time to time

    Thank you!

    Thank You
    doesn't say it all...
    ...but it's a nice alternative
    to overwhelming you
    with so much gratitude
    and appreciation
    that you begin to wish
    you'd never been
    so darned nice!

    Another "How to Squidoo" lens

This lens suggests saying Thank You too

OK, NOW you can promote your own "help" lenses!

Stop by, say hello. If you want to, tell us what lenses you have published that are "must reads" for Newbies and give lots of helpful and free information. But be careful, add a link that is NOT relevant or a lens that is even just a tiny bit Spammy and I will delete your comment. AJ has spoken!

    About AJ

I am very proud to have been awarded lens of the day for Auditory Processing Disorder TWICE!
And then I got it for Twelve ways to have a green & ethical Christmas!

Lensmaster aj2008, aka AJ , has been a member since July 10 2008, has rated 1,991 lenses, favorited 403, and has created 52 lenses from scratch. AJ donates their royalties to Save the Children. This member's top-ranked page is "Bullying At Primary School". See all my lenses

And a few more of AJ's lenses

I started to Squidoo because I wanted to publish lenses about parenting and environmental issues. I have published lenses on those topics, but I got a bit sidetracked as well!
