The Pilgrim Monument

Pilgrim Monument Built in 1620 in Plymouth, MA.

The Pilgrim Monument was built in 1910 to commemorate the Mayflower Pilgrims' first landing in the New World with their landing in Provincetown, MA in November 1620.

At this location the Pilgrims spent 5 weeks exploring the tip of Cape Cod, before they sailed on to Plymouth. This is also were the pilgrims signed the Mayflower Compact (this established the rule of law for the newly discovered land).

President Theodore Roosevelt was the first to begin work on the monument when he laid the cornerstone in 1907. Then in 1910, President William Howard Taft dedicated the finished 252-foot tower. At the time of its completion in 1910 it was the Cape's first building built to house a museum and opened its doors at the base of the monument for the purpose of educating people about Provincetown's role in Pilgrim history and American history.
