Celebrate The Thanksgiving Day in Canada
Thanksgiving Day in Canada was written by Krys Val Lewicki and illustrated by Ana Auml. It tells the story of a family that travels to their Grandparents home for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner in Canada. While there, they learn the story of why we call it Thanksgiving Day and why the Canadians and the Americans celebrate it on separate days.
Do you know why we celebrate Thanksgiving Day?
How about the children in your life? Can they answer this question?
"We're going to Grandma's and Grampa's for Thanksgiving!"
Thanksgiving Day in Canada, The History...
The first formal Thanksgiving ceremony was held in Newfoundland in 1578 by a British navigator named Martin Frobisher. He was celebrating a safe homecoming rather than a harvest. He was giving thanks for having returned safely from his search for the Northwest Passage.
In 1621 the Pilgrims, English settlers at Plymouth, Massachusetts, celebrated their first harvest in the New World in what eventually became the United States. In the 1600s, the French settlers in Canada celebrated with 'The Order of Good Cheer.' and in the 1750's settlers from The United States brought their celebrations to Canada.
In 1879 the Canadian Parliament decided that November 6th would be a celebration of Thanksgiving called Thanksgiving day and a national holiday. The date was changed over the years though until Parliament finally determined in 1957 that Thanksgiving would be observed on the second Monday each October. A great portion of the United States stays warmer longer than Canada and they therefore celebrate their harvest later than Canadians.

The book Thanksgiving Day in Canada
This book, by the way, is recommended for children aged 9 to 12. It is hard to find a good children's book with this Canadian perspective in it and I highly recommend this one.

"I originally looked to this book to help me find ways to make the holidays more meaningful and memorable for my children. We live across the country from our extended family, so there really are NO big family get-togethers. I did find ideas for creating holiday traditions for our little family, and so much more.
Each chapter of this book is full of ideas for creating special moments with the special people in your life. There are ideas for bedtime, mealtime, birthdays, seasons, holidays and more. It is really a compilation of ideas from dozens of women who share their personal stories and customs. There are lots of resources suggested if you want to learn more about a specific tradition. The final section of the book is a workbook area for recording your own family traditons.
If you are looking for ideas about how to make every day extraordinary, this book will not disappoint. Buy it, share it, you will love it!" ~~ C. Foley

This Page Was Created For The Squidoo Thanksgiving Cookoff Charity Contest
It celebrates the importance of Thanksgiving Day in Canada and in the United States.
Thanksgiving, the Canadian one anyway, had already passed when I read of this contest and to me, Thanksgiving was over. Done. Complete. However, once I thought about it I decided to write this page. It was one I had been intending to write for some time and here was the perfect prod to get me going.I am sure glad that I did write it and not only because it really was unbelievably thrilling when this lens won the Lens of the Day award on November 5th, 2009 but also because I have had occasion to connect with many wonderful Americans who are preparing for their Thanksgiving celebrations.
And by the way, in case you were wondering what the prize is (or was), Squidoo is generously donating $1,000 to the charity of my choice, the Diabetes Research Institute so Diabetes is the real winner here. Way to go Squidoo!

- Thanks so much for pointing out my error, Marc. I have corrected the text to show that Martin Frobisher was celebrating a safe homecoming from his search for the Northwest Passage on the Atlantic Ocean, not across it.

- The history I've read says that Frobisher was celebrating his safe return from a search for the Northwest Passage. He was travelling on the Atlantic - but across to me implies to or from Europe, which he was not doing.
Otherwise very nice.

- Congrats on the LotD! Great book review, not to mention the clarification on the differences between the Canada and U.S. Thanksgiving. I knew that Canada celebrates the holiday. Also new about the date difference, but not why. 5 star material, and a lensroll to my Thanksgiving recipe lens. I wish I could bless you, after you helped me with one of my lens. :D
