The Thanksgiving Year Project

Once again the United States finds another day of giving thanks before us, somewhere in the midst of eating food, food, and more food we are supposed to take the time to remember to be Thankful for what we have been given in this life.

There are many things in life to be thankful for and remembering as many of those things as possible is a great way to finish off the year and give welcome to the fast approaching new year.

This year has been a tough one for many of us, I have seen people lose jobs, homes, and marriages. I've watched them lose people they loved dearly, along with a great many hopes and dreams for the future. We've suffered health problems, depression, and defeat in nearly every corner of our world.

So what to be thankful for?

As long as we are still above ground, the game isn't over yet. Whatever has gone on in the past year, no matter what we have faced, we can be thankful that we are being given another year to put those pieces back together again.

Of all of the things people tend to focus on, the lack of time, money, resources, lives do not change when we focus on what we do not have. When we focus on what we lack, we create a mindset that means no matter how much we have it will never be enough.

New and Improved! Now all you have to do to participate is to share your reasons to be thankful to twitter! To join us twitter your reasons to be thankful for the day using the hashtag #YoTG and it will be added automatically to the Year of Thanksgiving Twibe located at www.twibes.com/group/yearofthanks

Can you find 365 things to be thankful for?

I am thankful for my son Justin.

Justin turned 13 on November 29, born seven weeks early his entry into this world was a tough one. I went into labor the day after Thanksgiving, in the middle of a snowstorm, 100 miles from the nearest hospital. He was born at mile marker 142 on highway 141 in the back of our local ambulance.

Thirteen years later he is quickly becoming a man, he is compassionate, intelligent, and helpful. He is always doing something to help other people out and is active in politics and advocacy causes. Last year he attended a take back the night rally with me, and I was so proud to see him committing to be a part of the solution.

So today, I am thankful for my baby boy who is almost a man.

I am also thankful that he still wants to dress up with mom for Halloween. This year we were Jake and Elwood Blues of Blues Brothers fame.

I am thankful for my husband.

Nearly eight years ago I met a man who was willing was willing to not only love me, but my three children as well, a particularly unlikely event considering he was a confirmed bachelor. We have been through a lot in eight years, but we've been through it together. He is loving, supportive, and always there for me. In him, I have much to be thankful for.

*Whispers* He is adorable too!

I am thankful for food experiments

Sometimes your attempts at cooking turn out better than others. Like when you set out to make homemade pizza and somehow end up with a bowl. It was still yummy, but as one friend put it it was crust'tastic. Deeeeeep dish pizza anyone?

PS for the recipe:

I used frozen bread dough for the crust, the first recipe said to leave a ridge for crust but after this one I skipped it and just rolled it flat. Place a thin layer of olive oil on the crust to within a half inch of the edge, then sauce, cheese and toppings. Cook at 500 degrees until golden brown, 5- 10 minutes max, it cooks fast!

Variation instead of pizza sauce, use hot wing sauce, then top with cheese and chicken and you have hot wing pizza just like Barro's Pizza makes.

I am thankful for Invoice Ninja's

It takes a good friend to call you in the middle of the night just because you are having a bad day. Invoice Ninja is one of my closest friends, and is always there for me. Last night it meant a great deal to me. So Thank you!

I am thankful for extended family

Sometimes we get so busy with life that opportunities to spend time with extended family are rare. We set out to spend time with my husbands family for the holiday, but we stopped to spend some time with my uncle and his family before heading on. It was nice to have some quiet time to just catch up and get to know each other again.

I am thankful for Blake's Lottaburger

Blake's Lottaburger is one of those local fast food chains, only available in New Mexico. They serve old fashioned burgers and fries, and some of the best shakes around. After eight years I still remembered exactly what to order. A lottaburger double-meat-double-cheese. Biting into that burger was like taking a trip back in time, they still tasted as good as they did in my youth. Yummy!

November 25, 2009

I'm thankful to have a home to return to.

We never made it to Arizona, we got sick on the way and had to turn around. As much as we were looking forward to spending time with my husbands family, there is nothing like having a home to return to when you are under the weather.

November 26, 2009

I am thankful for family traditions.

We all celebrate holidays in our own special ways, there are certain things that become tradition inside of each family. My grandmothers gooey stuffing, my aunt and I peeling potatoes side by side, family arguments about politics, carving the turnkey and stealing the skin, these are all things that are as traditional in my family as the turkey itself. We each have our own traditions whatever they may be, be thankful for them.

I am thankful for leftovers

Every year I hear people complain about leftovers, but I always look forward to them. In my family they don't last very long, in less than three days we find it hard to make a meal out of what is left but we still try. There's is nothing like my grandmother's cooking, even three days later!

I am thankful for my bed

my-bedAs silly as that may sound, I have turned my bed into a safe haven. With my silky soft blankets and sheets, big fluffy pillows and velvet topped comforter it is my happy place when I don't feel well. Since we were all still recovering from the flu, we spent all day in bed just kicking back and relaxing. It was pretty close to heaven.

What a wonderful project! Thank you for sharing yourself and family in this lens. With such a hard year for many people, I think it's important to look for the good in our lives. I'm thankful for my husband, my almost 13 year old son, family, friends, health, and happiness.

What better way to spend a few moments of each day, no matter how bad (or good) things are, and focus an "attitude of gratitude" on some one thing, event or being which we are thankful for? When we stop the madness that life sometimes brings for a moment and give thanks...It brings about a peaceful epiphany and paradigm shift of sorts (as the secondary definitions of epiphany in Websters relate): a usually sudden manifestation or perception of the essential nature or meaning of something (2) : an intuitive grasp of reality through something (as an event) usually simple and striking (3) : an illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure. I'm thankful for those amazing and creative moments of grace that trigger the most meaningful epiphanys in our lives... and help us wake up the true gratitude sleeping in our souls. Thank you Boshima for this wonderful renaissance lens of Thanksgiving... and thank you Correen for promoting it on Squid Report. Happy Thanksgiving!
