Converting Thanksgiving Clipart to Black and White

Sometimes you just want a nice black and white image, but they are not easy to find. Black and white clipart can be elegant and simple -- and it matches whatever color scheme you're working with.

Did you know you can easily convert your Thanksgiving clip art to black and white, using an image editing program?

The picture to the right is the same cornucopia shown at the top of this lens. I converted it to black and white to show you what I mean.

If you're using a Windows computer, you can do this using Paint, which is found in the Accessories menu. Paint is a very simple program but it will do this task. Be sure to work with a copy of the picture, not the original. Let's say you have downloaded a clipart file from a web site. Make a copy, then open the copy of the clipart file in Paint. In Paint's Image menu, select Attributes, then click on black and white. Save your file.

I'm sure that the Apple computer has a similar program, but I don't know what it is.

As I said earlier, Paint is a very simple little application. It is quite limited in what it can do. If you really want to edit your Thanksgiving Clipart, I suggest you invest in a more powerful image editing program.

There are many available, but the Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 for Windows and Adobe Photoshop Elements for the Mac is a popular, highly rated software application. You can use it to edit all of your digital photographs. Editing clipart is just the beginning of what you'll do with this application.

Change Colors in your Thanksgiving Clipart

When you're using a good image editing software application, you can change the color of various parts of your clipart. In the picture of the pilgrims, the couple on the left represent the original clipart. With the couple to the right, I have changed the woman's dress to the exact color of the man's tie.

I did this using two tools in Photoshop Elements: The Color Picker and the Magic Wand.

I could have changed the colors to any hue I wanted. I used the color of the man's tie but you could also choose colors to match your place settings at the table or the menu items or anything else you want.

Add Thanksgiving Clipart to a Photograph

You can add your Thanksgiving clipart to any digitaol photograph.

I have added the cornucopia (full color) to this photograph of a little girl taken last Thanksgiving. Admittedly, this isn't the best demonstration of clip art and photography but space is limited. With a little imaginaton, you can see the possibilities here.

To do this in Adobe Photoshop Elements, you would resize both the photograph and the clip art so the two images have the correct scale for one another. Then, using the Magic Wand, you select the white backbround in the clip art image. Reverse the selection so you have selected only the cornucopia. You don't want to add the white background to the photograph, just the object itself. Copy the selection to the clipboard, then paste it onto the photograph. Use the Move Tool to move the clipart to where you want it to be. Then save the file.

Turn your Thanksgiving Clipart into Stickers

Did you know how easy it is to turn your Thanksgiving clip art into stickers?

There are various ways you can do this. The first, obviously, is to print it onto paper or card stock, cut it out, put glue on the back and stick it on something.

If you have the computer skills and the right software program, you can print out a page full of stickers onto Avery labels or other similar products found at stationary stores or Staples.

Perhaps the easiest and neatest way is to use a machine like the
Xyron 150? Create-A-Sticker Machine

You often see this little gadget on sale in craft stores for $10 or less. I paid a whopping $1.50 for mine. You purchase cartridges separately. The machine comes with instructions, but essentially, you print out your clip art on to paper or card stock. You cut this paper or card stock into strips the width of the Xyron, then wheel it through the sticker maker. Your strip of paper comes out the other side of the Xyron, and it is now a sticker. You will still have to cut out your clipart using scissors.

It's difficult to explain, but this little gadget is wonderful.
