A Day of Celebration

Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day (Action de Grace in Canada), is a traditional North American holiday, which is a form of harvest festival. The date and whereabouts of the first Thanksgiving celebration is a topic of modest contention, though the earliest attested Thanksgiving celebration was on September 8, 1565 in what is now Saint Augustine, Florida. Despite scholarly research to the contrary, the traditional "first Thanksgiving" is venerated as having occurred at the site of Plymouth Plantation, in 1621.

Did you know?
That Thanksgiving is celebrated a month earlier in Canada. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States.
The Pilgrims

My intention was to have different colored squid pilgrims around the cornucopia. The graphic is not cut off. I intentionally made it that way.
About the Cornucopia
The cornucopia is a symbol of food and abundance dating back to the 5th century BC. It is also called horn of plenty, Horn of Amalthea and harvest cone. The original depictions of the cornucopia was a horn filled with fruits and flowers. Modern depictions of the cornucopia are a hollow, horn-shaped wicker basket filled with various kinds of festive fruit and vegetables. In North America, the cornucopia is associated with Thanksgiving and the harvest.

The Autumn Lady

Maybe a little too sophisticated for a pilgrim. You can think of her as Mary Love Wentworth.
She is an ancestor of possibly millions of people living in America today. There is a lot of speculation over Mary Brewster's maiden name. She is believed to have been born in Scrooby, England, and to have married Brewster circa 1591. Her name is often given as Mary Love Wentworth, Mary Love Brewster, Mary Love, Mary (Mayflower) Brewster, or Mary Wyrral. It has been speculated that she was the daughter of Edward Love and Alice Pope or perhaps Thomas Wentworth and Alice Gascoigne, but there is no compelling evidence for either assumption. Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska, and 2008 Republican Vice-Presidential nominee, is a descendant of Mary & William Brewster.

Turkey Facts
* Some believe Christopher Columbus thought that the land he discovered was connected to India, and believed the bird he discovered (the turkey) was a type of peacock. He therefore called it 'tuka,' which is 'peacock' in Tamil, an Indian language. Though the turkey is actually a type of pheasant, one can't blame the explorer for trying.
* The Native American name for turkey is 'firkee'.
* Turkeys are the only breed of poultry native to the Western Hemisphere.
* Dark meat is rare because meat is muscle and muscle is fed by blood. In the blood is myoglobin, which binds with oxygen and stores it in muscles for when it's needed. Myoglobin also makes meat dark. Muscles that are used most, like those in drumsticks (legs), have more myoglobin. Domestic turkeys are too fat to fly, so they don't use their breast muscles much, which is why breast meat is white. The breast of a wild turkey is entirely different, darker (and far tastier for those who are game). [This particular turkey fact is courtesy of livescience.com]
* A turkey under sixteen weeks of age is called a fryer, while a young roaster is five to seven months old.
* Age is a determining factor in taste. Old, large males are preferable to young toms (males) as tom meat is stringy. The opposite is true for females: old hens are tougher birds.
* It's not the turkey that makes you really sleepy. Turkey contains a natural chemical called tryptophan, which we need to build proteins for our bodies. Tryptophan is also related to the production of serotonin, which helps us sleep. What makes you really sleepy after a Thanksgiving meal is the potatoes, pies and alcohol. Why? Because they contain carbohydrates. Therein lies the difference between "helping" you sleep and "making" you sleep. [This particular turkey fact is courtesy of livescience.com]
* Turkeys have great hearing, but no external ears. They can also see in color, and have excellent visual acuity and a wide field of vision (about 270 degrees), which makes sneaking up on them difficult. However, turkeys have a poor sense of smell (what's cooking?), but an excellent sense of taste.
* The ballroom dance known as the Turkey Trot was named for the short, jerky steps a turkey makes.

What would Thanksgiving be without a reference to the Native Americans.
The dress, hair and overall shape is an inverse photo of Hallmark's Native American Barbie Ornament. I shaped the hands to make them look like squid type hands. I colored the hair so that it would look like it's glowing. I colored her lips and put two Squidoo eyes instead of one to make her look a little geeky.
If you haven't figured it out, this is the Squidoo version of Pocahontas. Pocahontas means "little wanton". Matoaka (or Matoika), Amonute and Rebecca are her other names. Pocahontas is memorable, as there are cities and places named after her [info courtesy of wikipedia]:

Happy Squidurkey

Originally he was a black and white clipart graphic. So I colored him and added a squid eye. Earlier [in the Turkey Fact section] you saw him blinking like the sun. I had thought of other ways of animating him, but maybe I will do that next year. Squidsgiving is [or should be] the Squidoo version of saying Thanksgiving. I hope you have a nice Squidsgiving. Don't forget to take time to stop and realize that there is a lot to be thankful for.
