That Girl - a classic from the Sixties
That Girl was another ground-breaking classic TV show that originally aired on ABC on September 8, 1966. It is currently shown in reruns occasionally on TV and DVDs are available for the first three seasons.
It starred Marlo Thomas as the title character, Ann Marie, an aspiring actress living in New York City. She had to take a number of menial jobs to support herself while auditioning for small parts off broadway or commercials. The show was pure fantasy - no one would be able to afford the spacious New York apartment as well as an extensive wardrobe of mod fashions on the money she was making!
Ted Bessell played Donald Hollinger, her boyfriend and a writer for Newsview Magazine; Lew Parker and Rosemary DeCamp played her parents - Lou Marie and Helen Marie. Bernie Kopell and Ruth Buzzi played Ann & Donald's friends and both were featured throughout the series.
Each show started with a preview in which something suprising or unusual would happen and a discussion would foreshadow the episode's story. The scene would always end with someone exclaiming "That Girl!" (often pointing) just as Ann would wander into the shot. The opening credits during seasons 2 through 5 followed, featuring Thomas, in character, ambitiously strolling the streets of New York and flying a kite that bore a resemblance to her.
That Girl was featured concurrently along with the sixties classics Bewitched and The Flying Nun on ABC. At the time it was referred to as ABC's "triple threat" as all of these shows were tremendously popular and remain so today.

This was a fun show. I like the episode where her father appeared as a priest. Posted July 06, 2007 |
