The 48 Laws of Power - The Search For Power In All Relationships

The first line of The 48 Laws of Power is an admission many people are never willing to make: "The feeling of having no power over people and events is generally unbearable to us--when we feel helpless and miserable."

In every setting, people want power. They want the feeling that they are in charge of themselves. They're autonomous. They want fair.

Robert Greene's book is an exploration of how life is never truly fair. As Greene says: "If the world is like a giant scheming court and we're all trapped inside it, there is no use in trying to opt out of the game. . . If the game of power is inescapable, better to be an artist than a denier or a bungler."

* Law 1 Never Outshine the Master!

Anyone with a boss knows this rule. It is the "brown-noser" rule: always make your boss look smarter than they really are.

* Law 2 Never put too Much Trust in Friends, Learn how to use Enemies

Beware of your friends and people you trust. They are easily swayed to envy. Former enemies can become more loyal partners. If you have no enemies you must make some, now!

* Law 3 Conceal your Intentions

The strategy of keeping those around you off-balance. Never make your true purposes known. Guide people down the wrong path and trap them in their perceptions.

* Law 4 Always Say Less than Necessary

The more you say the more you appear just like everyone else. Deal in opaqueness, never let anyone really know the truth of what you are saying.

* Law 5 So Much Depends on Reputation. Guard it with your Life

Once you lose some of your reputation you are on a slippery slope. Protect your reputation while, at the same time, destroying your enemies' reputations.

* Law 6 Court Attention at all Cost

What people don't see doesn't matter. Make yourself visible, be seen by everyone at any cost. Be unique, be different, be mysterious, but always been seen.

* Law 7 Get others to do the Work for you, but Always Take the Credit

Advance your agenda on the backs of those around you. Let them do the work while you take the credit. It will make you look smart, efficient, and productive. If others will do it, don't do it yourself.

* Law 8 Make other People come to you, use Bait if Necessary

Force other people into action. When you do you are controlling them. Make them abandon their plans and follow yours- all-the-while they're thinking they are in control.

* Law 9 Win through your Actions, Never through Argument

Make people demonstrate how they agree with you, not just verbally agree. It is much more powerful to see them act.

* Law 10 Infection: Avoid the Unhappy and Unlucky

Only associate with the happy and the successful, don't be drug into the group of the unfortunate unless you want it to rub off on you.

* Law 11 Learn to Keep People Dependent on You

Always be needed and wanted. Make people dependent on you, and you will control their fate. Never let them know they can do it without you.

* Law 12 Use Selective Honesty and Generosity to Disarm your Victim

One act of honesty is more powerful than 10 acts of dishonesty, you must sprinkle in some honesty in order to bring down people's guard. Open holes with gifts.

* Law 13 When Asking for Help, Appeal to People's Self-Interest, Never to their Mercy or Gratitude

Gain people's favor by appealing to their greed or desire to benefit by helping you. Past favors do nothing to gain an advantage, only the present counts.

* Law 14 Pose as a Friend, Work as a Spy

Always know your enemy. Gather information through any means, ask questions of people who know them. Become a spy.

* Law 15 Crush your Enemy Totally

Show no mercy. If you don't crush your enemy totally they will seek revenge.

* Law 16 Use Absence to Increase Respect and Honor

Use absence to make yourself appear disinterested and grant yourself value.
