The Return Of The Big, Bad Bruins

Hard to believe after the great season they had last year, but the Boston Bruins are on a real roll in this year. With the excellent goaltending of Tim Thomas (backed up solidly by Tuukka Rask) and the stellar defensive work of Zdeno Chara and Johnny Boychuk, hardnosed hockey (and goalscoring!) from Milan Lucic, and Shawn Thornton, combined with the goalscoring of newcomer Tyler Seguin, Nathan Horton, David Krejci, the Bruins look like they are planning on again going DEEP into the playoffs.

The Bruins swept their hated rivals, the Montreal Canadiens, out of the 2008-09 Stanley Cup Playoffs in four straight games, but were upset by the Carolina Hurricanes in the next round. Boston did much, much better by winning the Stanley Cup in 2010-11 in a long tough campaign that saw them again defeat the Habs and make short work of the Philadelphia Flyers. It will be interesting to see how the Bruins do this year. After starting October with a terrible record they rebounded to an almost perfect November.

Who will be the next speedbump on the Bruins road to the Stanley Cup this year?

2008-09 Stanley Cup Playoffs

Game One: Bruins vs Habs

The Boston Bruins have tangled with the Montreal Canadiens in the NHL playoffs many times over the years and although considered the favorite of the two teams, Boston had to be wary of the Habs. This is the highlights of Game One.

2008-09 Bruins And Habs Renew The Old Rivalry

Game One: Boston 4, Montreal 2
Boston built up a 2-0 lead in the 1st period on goals by Phil Kessel and David Krejci. Chris Higgins got the Habs within one goal late in the first and then Montreal's sniper, Alexei Kovalev tied the game 2-2 on a blast from the faceoff circle to the left of Bruins goalie Tim Thomas. It looked like maybe the Habs were going to claw their way back.

Then Zdeno Chara scored a massive goal on the power play in the 3rd period. The Bruins dominated from that point and Phil Kessel potted an empty net goal (assisted by Milan Lucic) and the Canadiens decided to try to "send a message" at the end of the game.

Bruins Win 4-2, Put Habs On Brink Of Elimination

Game 3:
The Boston Bruins take a stranglehold on the Montreal Canadiens and push the Habs to the brink of elimination in the opening round of the 2008-09 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Habs came out with everything they had in the first period in the Canadiens' home rink, but the Bruins came out of the first period tied 1-1. Boston went ahead 2-1, but Montreal came back and tied it in the second. When the Bruins went up 3-2 and then started forechecking the Habs, Montreal couldn't make more than one or two passes in the neutral zone or even in their own end. Phil Kessel scored an empty net goal to put the game out of reach.

The Boston Bruins Fan Club On Facebook

I've started a new Boston Bruins Fan Club on Facebook. So far we're up to 15 members (12 if you count me, myself and I) but I've been updating it after every game and will continue all season. I'm pretty sure my commentary on the games is better than just about anyone else's on Facebook, so take a look.

This should be quite a good group once I get more members. Just need to get the word out!

The History of the Boston Bruins

Released March 24, 2009

NHL:
The History of the Boston Bruins

Pick up The History Of The Boston Bruins, the DVD was released to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the Boston Bruins, NHL Studios tells the story of the revered Original Six franchise. With rich tradition, a parade of vibrant characters, a legendary home arena, and a passionate fan base, Boston has been the flash point of some of the National Hockey League's most important events over the last century.

With five Stanley Cup championships, the Bruins provided Boston with some magical moments, and created a rivalry with the Montreal Canadiens that is among the fiercest in sports. Legendary greats like Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Ray Bourque, and Cam Neely have all worn the Spoked B.

And then there was the Boston Garden, a cathedral among arenas that had as much character as the Bruins' most intriguing personalities.

Through archival images, game footage, rare film clips, and exclusive interviews, NHL Studios tells the history of the Boston Bruins, one of hockey's greatest franchises. This is their story. This is their history. This is the Boston Bruins.

Complete coverage: Retirement Night (Bobby Orr, Terry O'Reilly, Cam Neely, Ray Bourque, Phil Esposito, John Bucyk), Last Hurrah at the Garden ceremony, player features (Zdeno Chara, Andrew Ference, Tim Thomas, Marc Savard), personal stories, and much more!

A Great Book About The Bruins' History

Black and Gold:
Four Decades of the Boston Bruins in Photographs

Black and Gold is a pictorial romp through four decades of one of the NHL's great Original Six franchises-a personal history of the Boston Bruins as seen through the lens of Steve Babineau, team photographer for 35 years.

Over his long career, Babs, as he is known, has captured over one-third of the history of this storied franchise with his work. He has seen many of the greats in the organization and he has photographed them all for the record: Bobby Orr, John Bucyk, Phil Esposito, Terry O'Reilly, Ray Bourque, Cam Neely, Gerry Cheevers, Don Cherry and the Lunchpail Gang, and many more.

In glorious color and classic black and white, Black and Gold lovingly captures four decades of Bruins history and the team's characters in over 300 photographs, many of them never published before.

How 'Bout Them Bruins?

There's already some hockey experts saying the Boston Bruins have a good shot at the Stanley Cup this year. It's too early to say, but the Bruins are looking like a real contender so far. Way too much hockey left to play before anything should be said about planning a parade through downtown Boston. Let's leave that kind of chatter for the deluded Habs fans. :)

How far do you think the Boston Bruins will go this year?

Deep, deep into the playoffs!

admitoneboston says:

Well judging by the top seeds continuing to be eliminated in all sports from the playoffs I would say not too deep if we are the top seed

Bradshaw says:

Deep into the playoffs is my prediction! Boston just rolled over the Montreal Canadiens and I don't much better luck for the New York Rangers (if they can get past Ovechkin's Caps).

Boston just has more overall depth. #1 on power play and penalty kills in this year's playoffs.

Bradshaw says:

I'm kinda biased because the Bruins are my team. I'm really impressed with the team this year. Lots of depth and great goaltending. Hopefully, they'll continue with their excellent play into the playoffs!

They're a flash in the pan. Won't even make the playoffs this year!

The Story of the Boston Bruins
(The NHL:
History and Heros)

The Boston Bruins have been one of the oldest franchises in the NHL (the oldest in the United States) and they've enjoyed great success winning the Stanley Cup and they've also had periods of spectacular decline.

This book highlights both aspects of the franchise's history, with lots of great players wearing the black and gold one of the NHL's greatest teams. A great read for any Bruins fan.

1929 Bruins Win Their First-Ever Stanley Cup

I just love this picture.

The Boston Bruins won their first ever Stanley Cup beating the defending Stanley Cup champions, the New York Rangers in 2 straight games (it was a best of three), 2-0 in the first game and 2-1 in the second. As a side note, this was the first Stanley Cup Final to include two U.S.-based hockey teams.

1929 Playoff Race

In the playoffs, Boston faced the Montreal Canadiens, the Rangers faced their rivals, the New York Americans, and the Toronto Maple Leafs played the Detroit Cougars (Yes, the Cougars). The Leafs lost to the Rangers which set up the Boston-Rangers final. Tiny Thompson (the Bruins' legendary goalie) shutout the Rangers in the first game and Dit Clapper and Harry Oliver scored the game winning goals for Boston.

1939 Bruins

The 1939 Stanley Cup Finals saw the establishment of the best-of-seven format in the playoffs. The Boston Bruins beat the Toronto Maple Leafs four games to one to take the Stanley Cup. Backed by the brilliant goaltending of Frank Brimsek and a 5 goal series from Roy Conacher, the Bruins rolled over the Leafs.

1939 Playoff Race

To get to the finals, Boston had to defeat the New York Rangers in 7 games, winning the series 4-3 and earning a bye into the finals. The Leafs had to win 2 best of three series to get there. First by beating the NY Americans in 2 straight, then beat the Detroit Red Wings two games to one.

History Of The Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins joined the National Hockey League in 1924 as the first U.S.-based professional hockey team. Over the course of their history, the Bruins have won the Stanley Cup a total of 5 times. The Montreal Canadiens have won the most (24), followed by the Toronto Maple Leafs (13) and the Detroit Red Wings (11).

The Bruins first home was the Boston Arena (now known as the Matthews Arena) from 1924-1928 when the team moved into the infamous Boston Gardens.
