The Barcelona Chair - A Modern Design Classic

The Barcelona Chair is one of the most recognisable pieces of furniture in the world. The chair was designed by the Bauhaus architect, Mies Van Der Rohe in 1929. It was custom made especially for the German Pavillion at the World Expo in Barcelona where it was intended to act as a throne to the King and Queen of Spain (unfortunately they never sat on it).

Nowadays the official license for The Barcelona Chair is owned by US company, Knoll. Although the product appears to be machine made, it is largely handcrafted which makes it an expensive and coveted piece of furniture to own.

Knoll are officially licensed to manufacture the Barcelona Chair and their products are acknowledged to the be the best reproductions on the market. They are also the only chair that bears the Mies Van Der Rohe signature.

A new reproduction Knoll Barcelona Chair can cost $4655, but this Amazon offer is for $3888.

Why is the Barcelona Chair so sought after?

The value of the piece lies in both the exquisite design and the quality craftsmanship required to manufacture the chair.

The frame is made from stainless steel. The parts are then bent, polished and then welded together to create a seamless structure. The leather for the cushion is taken from a single hide, cut into squares and then hand-stitched back together again.

This attention to detail takes time and money and therefore this is reflected in the cost. There are many models on the market - each with varying degrees of authenticity.

Mies Van Der Rohe on Wikipedia

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (), born Maria Ludwig Michael Mies (March 27, 1886 - August 17, 1969) was a German-born American architect. He was commonly referred to and addressed by his surname, Mies, by most of his American students and others.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, along with Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier, is widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture. Mies, like many of his post World War I contemporaries, sought to establish a new architectural style that could represent modern times just as Classical and Gothic did for their own eras. He created an influential 20th century architectural style, stated with extreme clarity and simplicity. His mature buildings made use of modern materials such as industrial steel and plate glass to define interior spaces. He strived towards an architecture with a minimal framework of structural order balanced against the implied freedom of free-flowing open space. He called his buildings "skin and bones" architecture. He sought a rational approach that would guide the creative process of architectural design, and is known for his use of the aphorisms "less is more" and "God is in the details".
