You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one... Welcome to my lens about The Beatles songs!

There were probably many bands that created and recorded more songs that The Beatles did. But no other pop band or solo artist has ever had greater impact on the society and culture than the famous "Fab Four" from Liverpool, England - John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

Are you one of their faithful fans like I am? If yes, then this lens is for you! Enjoy - let's take the Magical Mystery Tour and bring back the memories of our favorite band. I guarantee you that we'll have a lot of fun here... Like in those old days we'll be voting again for the best Beatles songs and albums. Do you remember which song you loved most to dance to on the disco parties? In my case it was "Oh! Darling", or was it "Imagine"?

Well, as ForeskinEnterprises noted in the Guestbook, "Imagine" was not exactly a pure Beatles song (I'm very happy to have such knowledgeable readers!). Of course, it was only a John Lennon's song, but it is one of the most popular songs by any of The Beatles boys and possibly one of the most-loved songs ever written. And it gained even more popularity recently thanks to the interesting cover by American Idol's David Archuleta (will he win this year?).

Still, in this lens I will concentrate mostly on the songs recored by ALL of the Beatles - together as the band - and we'll be voting here only on such songs and albums.

I can't believe it but already 40 years have past since we were twisting and shouting. Ever since Al Gore (well, I mean - Tim Berners-Lee, actually...) invented the Internet, I've always wanted to have my own online version of Billboard's list of my most favorite The Beatles songs - so that all of my friends, my online visitors and I too could vote for the Fab Four's songs.

Thanks to the latest present from Seth Godin and His Squidoo All-Star Band we are able to do that by using the plexo module! Thanks, guys, for giving us the ticket to ride...

Ilona

P.S. I used a number of the titles of The Beatles songs for the subheadings on this lens. As a Beatles fan, can you find them? If you do, write about in my Guestbook. Thanks a lot!

The Beatles #1 Songs

This listing of the number one songs by The Beatles is based on the album "1" that was compiled by producer George Martin and the (then) three surviving members of the band. It includes 27 songs that went to number-one in the United Kingdom on the Record Retailer charts and/or the United States on the Billboard magazine charts , with the following minor exceptions. The song "For You Blue" was listed in Billboard chart compilations at #1, as a Double A-sided single with "The Long and Winding Road", but Capitol Records treated "For You Blue" as strictly a B-side and didn't promote it as an A-side. Meanwhile, "Day Tripper" was included on 1, since it charted at #1 in the UK as a double A side with "We Can Work It Out", while in the US, only "We Can Work It Out" was #1.

I don't know about you - how much you like following the Billboard Hot Lists, Top Songs, Top Albums, Top Artists, etc. I've been listening to the radio presentations of various Billboard countdowns since I was a very little girl - introduced to that exciting pastime by my father who was a great fan of The Beatles himself (he also liked "Satchmo" - Louis Armstrong).

The Beatles - Rock, Rock'n'roll, Pop? Oh, simply classic...

An excellent presentation of The Beatles - their history, musical evolution, influence on other musicians and popular culture in general can be found in the popular Wikipedia article - The Beatles.

This well-researched article also contains official discography, song catalogues, information on number one singles, information about the films they made and other projects (e.g., "Anthology" and "Love" - the famous Las Vegas production by Cirque du Soleil).

The best books on The Beatles are listed, as well as interesting external links - among them The Beatles' London, The Beatles line-ups, The Beatles trivia, Beatles Interview Database (enormous listing with lots of funny stuff! - not only interviews... called "the ultimate historical Beatles resource"), The Beatle Timeline - excellent resource! - and much more.

This Beatles Wikipedia site also offers links to audio resources that will certainly make happy The Beatles fans, especially the song samples.

There is much more on Wikipedia about The Beatles and their music - for instance each of their albums is thoroughly covered (e.g., "Rubber Soul"), as well as their most popular songs (e.g., "Hey Jude"). Each member of The Beatles also has his own Wikipedia page (e.g. George Harrison).

The Beatles portal at Wikipedia

Provides plenty of interesting information related to The Beatles

Wikipedia's The Beatles article or rather a Wikipedia category is just one of many parts of The Beatles portal - a group project by the band's fans to improve information on The Beatles. Other categories are: The Beatles albums, The Beatles songs, The Beatles' children, The Beatles' wives and Apple Records.

Here is an interesting listing of The Beatles' children compiled by Wikipedia contributors:

  • Dhani Harrison (1978) - son of George Harrison and Olivia Trinidad Arias
  • Julian Lennon (1963) - son of John Lennon and Cynthia Powell
  • Sean Ono Lennon (1975) - son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono
  • John Ono Lennon II (1968) - unborn baby of John Lennon and Yoko Ono
  • children of Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney: Heather McCartney (1963; adopted by Paul, from Linda's previous marriage), Mary McCartney (1969), Stella McCartney (1971) and James Louis McCartney (1977)
  • Beatrice Milly McCartney (2003) - daughter of Paul McCartney and Heather Mills McCartney
  • children of Ringo Starr and Maureen Cox: Zak Starkey (1965), Jason Starkey (1967), and Lee Starkey (1970).

Some of them are following the footsteps of their famous and extremely talented fathers and are also successful in making music. For example, Zak Starkey is a well-respected drummer who's been playing with two famous English rock 'n' roll bands - The Who and Oasis. Stella McCartney is a famous (and rich) fashion designer and photographer.
