Garmin Approach G5 Review
My Pick for the Best Golf GPS
The Garmin Approach G5 is a new golf GPS for the spring of 2009. It brings some new innovations that make it my top pick for the best golf GPS unit. Garmin is of course one of the top makers of regular units and they bring the combine their expertise with golfers' needs. The Approach G5 is the most expensive unit on this list at just under $500, but unlike the other models there is no monthly or annual fee to access the course database. The Good:
The Touchscreen is bright and in color.
Simple to use menu.
Over 10,000 courses come preloaded for free. You can get more courses (free!) through the web site.
Nice utility for keeping score
Waterproof and fairly rugged
Fairly accurate measure of shot distance
Still Needs Work:
The default settings are nice, but I would like more customization. Screen brightness, for example, should be adjustable.

Great Accuracy Makes this a Favorite
The SkyCaddie SG5 from SkyHawke is another option for golfer's who want both features and accuracy in their golf GPS. It has a large database of courses and can give you lots of info that will speed up your golf game and may even improve your score. The Good:
High marks for accuracy since it measures from the ground rather than from satellite.
Water resistant and rugged.
Easy to use-only need one hand.
Color screen easy to see in the sun.
Holds up to 40 targets for each hole, such as creeks and bunkers
Get the distance to the front of the green, the back of it, and places in between.
The Bad:
Customer support isn't that great, but that could improve.
Although the SkyCaddie SG5 is cheaper than the Garmin Approach G5, there is a subscription fee to access the course database. Be prepared to spend between $30-$60 to take advantage of this feature.

Garmin GolfLogix GPS-8 Review
This Bestselling Model Keeps it Simple
The Garmin GolfLogix GPS-8 has remained the bestselling golf GPS unit on Amazon for many months. It's a good balance between features and affordability. It's easy to use and Garmin is well-known for reliability. The Good:
Automatic. Just turn it on and you're good to go. It automatically knows your course and advances the display to the holes and targets.
Waterproof.
Screen is easy to read in any lighting condition.
Holds 20 courses.
Calculates to the front, center, and back of the green.
The Bad:
It says that batteries last 22 hours, but I find their estimate too generous.
Bad reports of customer service
iGolf Neo Review
No Frills -- Bargain Priced
If you're looking for an inexpensive golf GPS and can do without extra features, consider the iGolf Neo.The Good:
The price. I'm not sure if it's the cheapest golf GPS out there, but it's the cheapest one that gets good reviews.
The small size. It fits easily in your pocket.
Provides the yardage info you need (but no maps).
The Bad:
Isn't as accurate as Garmin or SkyCaddie, but most courses are fairly accurate.
No extra features, like maps, which can be handy, but you shouldn't expect that feature at this price.
