Burglar Alarm Systems

A burglar alarm system will significantly improve the protection and safety of your family, property and possessions. By installing a burglar alarm you will dramatically decrease your chances of a break-in. A burglar does not want the hassle or neither has the time to overcome a burglar alarm system - he will simply just move on.

Whether you are guarding some priceless antiques, diamond necklaces or just the average household home like the rest of us then you need to consider securing your possessions and protect your assists that you have worked so hard to purchase. You should consider installing a burglar alarm as none of us are immune to the opportunist burglar, let alone the professional, however we may not all need a hi-tech expensive, top of the range alarm system.

There are two types of burglar alarm system: hard wired and wireless. Usually a burglar security system comprises of a control panel, alarm sounder/siren and alarm sensor devices such as door/window sensors, PIR motion sensors, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.

A straightforward home alarm system that will secure your home while you are away and will also dial your mobile cell phone or landline when activated by an intruder can cost as little as $80. Complete wireless burglar alarm systems that include PIR movement detectors and contact sensors on doors and windows to cover the whole house, together with an auto dial facility, control panel and alarm sounder can cost around $170. These can be fitted with basic DIY skills in around one hour. Secure your garden, garden shed or garage with a simple alarm for around $40.

Wireless Home Security

Home security wireless systems provide a cost effective, easy to install solution that any DIY'er can install. Wireless security systems offer considerable advantages over hardwired systems. With a hardwired alarm system you ideally need a professional installation and this is often expensive. It is more expensive as there is not only the labor costs, but there are additional materials too, e.g. cabling, which you have no control how much you will be charged - from a professional company when they install the security system.

If you are in rented accommodation, or are moving house then a wireless system is easily de-installed at zero cost. Of course you have the peace of mind that wireless security devices have no cables to cut so they will always carry on working. The only disadvantage of wireless security systems is that you will need to renew the batteries on a regular basis, based on the manufacturer's recommendation.

CCTV Security Systems

There are many crime preventative measures that can be taken to secure your home and one of the most highly effective methods is to install CCTV (Closed Circuit TV) cameras. Not only do they capture and record images but they act as a visual deterrent for would-be intruders. One of the reasons for recording images of course, is for post-incident analysis when investigating an attempted break-in so that they may be used in evidence when convicting an intruder.

There are many different types of CCTV systems and they have different capacities to meet a variety of objectives. One of the most recent developments is the web camera server which uses the Internet for remote surveillance. CCTV systems usually utilize CCD video cameras which produce the video and cable or wireless transmitters/receivers or Internet to transmit and view the video. As the application of CCTV systems has increased, the CCTV industry has developed variety of CCTV equipment like Time Lapse VCRs, infrared illuminators, Pan/Tilt, combiners, etc.

Home surveillance cameras deter 'opportunistic' crime, where people take advantage of a situation on the spur of the moment. The cameras are also creating a vastly increased rate of conviction after crimes are detected. Virtually everyone caught committing an offence on camera pleads guilty nowadays. Once people know they have been videotaped, they admit the offence immediately. Cameras will help solve crimes and act as a deterrent.

Self Install Home Security

Why not self install your own security system? It's easier than you think and will save you a lot of money. Most average DIY'ers can install a home alarm system.
The first step when embarking on any project is planning. When installing a home security system we need to plan the layout of where the various components of the systems will be installed. By not planning correctly, you reduce the effectiveness of the components. i.e. you wouldn't want to position a PIR movement sensor where no-one would ever pass by it and you wouldn't want to position a siren/bell box that was in easy reach to be tampered with. Also by planning correctly, in the case of a wired alarm system, you have an idea on how much cabling you need to purchase.

Once you have your layout drawn up and decide where to position the security sensors you need to decide on how to mount them and the case of a wired system, the best method of running the cables back to the control panel. Keep cable runs well away from power cabling and the plumbing system and make sure you drill holes big enough to pass multi-core cable through etc...

Monitored Home Security

Monitored home security is when you, the homeowner, have a contract with a security monitoring company that will monitor and respond when your alarm is triggered. It may be triggered by a burglar breaking into your property or you may have a panic button that will alert the monitoring company. Additionally, more sophisticated alarm systems may have either smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors which, when triggered, will alert the monitoring company. The company will call out the most appropriate emergency service for your needs.

How do you know if you need monitored home security? Look at the scenario where you are not at home and you are being burgled, who will alert the authorities to attend the break-in? You could hope a passer by or neighbor may contact them but you cannot be sure they will. Often others don't want to get involved if they hear a home alarm siren as they may fear for their own safety. The one and only time you want the authorities to be called and you cannot guarantee that they will be - unless you have monitored home security.
