Brown Recluse Spider Bite, or Is It?

Assuming a Recluse Spider Bite Can be Dangerous to Your Health
For the attention that this spider is getting over the years you would think that it is the size of a house, can run at the speed of light and has fangs larger then your dinner fork. When in reality it is only the size of a quarter with the legs spread. The truth be known also it is not an aggressive spider and only winds up biting a human when trapped in the folds of bed linens or clothes.
It can not be stressed enough for what I would say, compared to over 100 articles that I have read from medical documentation, loxosceles experts/researchers and personal experience during 28 years as a health care professional, that blaming the pimple forming and growing on your leg or your buttocks, shoulder or arm or thigh, on a brown recluse spider bite might just be an assumption that may cause either your permanent disfigurment or your demise.
Now that is quite the close-up of the Brown Recluse. It was for all intents and purposes used to get your attention. Forgive me for your chills, hair raising or squeamish stomach reaction. However it is important to the purpose of writing. There is something different if you have noticed the text under the picture. Brown Recluse have only six eyes that show in three sets of two. They also have the fiddle shaped marking on their backs just behind their eye clusters. There is another spider, that of the Genus: Sicarius, Species: hahni, that lives in the sand of African beaches that also has a bothersome venoumous bite, having six eyes. So this is an important feature to remember when you are attempting to identify what bit you. More attention should just be paid to the confinement/entrapment, leaving the identification to expert close up exam.
Yes.....WHAT BIT YOU? Another words, "Where is the PROOF?" It is very important to save, contain or safely catch what 'bit' you and bring the specimen with you to the hospital or Dr's office. On a lighter note here, it probably would be a nice thing to do,is to let the professionals know that the specimen may still be alive in the bag. Have had few of my peers be surprised when they opened a bag to a live spider, animal or snake specimen only to have them hit the deck after a scream.
Before you get into the deeper read of the lens article. I would be remiss if I did not offer a bit of Folk Lore, American Indian and East Indian understanding what the Arachnid Spider meant to the Ancients.
Primary Consideration/Empirical Treatment Plan: CA MRSA
Close Up Look
This is MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) and now identified as (Community Acquired Methicillin Staphylococcus Aureus).
What most of the articles and research is showing recently is, in leiu of the absence of a spider specimen, as per deeper study and evaluation of most of these presenting infections have nothing to do with a spider bite at all, rather, exposure to this resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. Keep in mind that you could be bitten by any insect and get infected if you happen to have this CA MRSA on your skin surface. In this case however, this vector exchange is usually found in the those that are at risk immunologically. These groups would include, HIV+, Diabetics, elderly, new borns young children, those on chemotherapy, chronic users of steroids for respiratory disease control, or those that are recovering from a virus infection like shingles, chicken pox or severe flu when your immune system is looking for regeneration periods. None the less, even healthy individuals are at risk should you have an open wound, puncture site, scratch or burn reacting to Community Acquired MRSA.
A wound is generally described as an opening on the skin surface that can either be superficial (redness or rubbed area) vs scratch/abrasion or outright laceration. Should you have just finished shaving your face or you ladies, just finished shaving your legs, you have thousands of micro wounds on your skin. Microscopic openings of your primary source of protection from the environment. Why do you think it burns when you splash that after shave lotion on your face afterwards. Ladies get the same reaction when they splash an after lotion on their freshly shaved legs. Those solutions contain an astringent so that those pores of those hair follicles that you just injured shaving, react by tightening or shrinking them, which aids in closure. Some of these solutions have an antibacterial effect, however it is very minimal.
Now this prunning and fluffing is usually the start of everyones day. It is either to go to work, to the gym, run errands or taking the kids to school, etc. In all of this activity you come into contact with hundreds of surfaces in your active day that are covered with that many germs multiplied in numbers beyond your imagination. The majority of these surfaces may not have had your personal cleanliness attention.
In leiu of this routine, knowing certain behaviors and calculating over the years all the infections experienced, there are some bahaviors the general public should take into consideration to guard your health.
1. HAND WASHING: Washing your hands for at least 15 seconds with plain soap and water (the same time it takes to sing one verse of "Happy Birthday") is one of the most paramount protections against infection. Notice though, PLAIN soap. There are more recent findings today that show that the antibacterial/antifungal chemicals that have saturated the market may not be as benificial as once believed. They may do more harm to you just by their chemical make up themselves. SEARCH SUGGESTION: TRICLOSAN.
2. Try to control the indiscriminate touching of your mouth or your eyes during the course of the day. That also includes the biting of your fingernails or playing with your hair.
3. At the gym or at sports functions, bring your own seat covering, excercise bench covers, personal yoga mat. Use your own soaps and personal items. Sharing make-up, deoderants, razors is no longer a safe BFF ritual. Nor is it a safe ritual to share even with your partner or spouse, razors or roll on deoderants.
4. At public places for dining. Always wash your hands before eating. It is not as taboo as you think to use the facilities restroom rather than reaching for that chemical liquid hand cleanser. Just use the soap and water supplied, taking that 15 seconds singing, "Happy Birthday" to yourself, good rinsing, drying with paper towel and use that towel to shut the water off and opening the door to return to your seat.
5. Just an in general note. Consider a healthier life style regarding diet, stress reduction, cessation of smoking, decreasing alcohol intake, increasing your excercise quality of your day.
6. Should you find yourself with a questionable rash or a festering pimple. Watch it closely avoiding the urge to pinch pop it.
Keep it clean dry and protected. If you notice significant change in its small size to large proportions with redness, hot to touch, or red streaks in a 12 hour to 24 hour period. Go get it checked out.
7. Never ASSume! You know, in reality... ASSuming is nothing more than 'denial' and 'rationalization' wearing different clothing. They are usually ways in which we deal with something that we are afraid of. Best off not to go that route. "Turn on the lights" and go get checked.
Living With CA MRSA

Contemporary Article Regarding Flesh Eating Bacteria
It is certainly a testament and a siren call to all professionals in the health field to improve their techniques in handwashing as they go from patient to patient. Fifteen seconds is all it takes using a slippery soap and the proper friction movements between the rubbing of hand against hands and fingers inbetween fingers. Just 15 seconds, which in reality is not a significant amount of time in the busiest of schedules. Although the exact vector is not know what infected this womans surgical site due to multiple bloodtransfusions and needle sticks, the greatest protection is 15 seconds of wahsing your hands.
In your home Bleach is your friend. This entire page is dedicated to the protections and decisions that you make should you cut, abraid or scratch your skin on anything, cleaning your home and those areas that you use frequently.
This article is a testament to be more cognitive of the use of antibiotics when you go to the Dr. It is no longer savy to believe that antibiotics are good for virus infections unless the virus is overpowering the immune system, you would receive an 'antiviral'. Sit with your physician and your childrens's pediatrician to know the difference.

- There are few infections that are more feared than that of the flesh eating bacteria. It is one of the most profound systemic infections and the most forcefully advanced germ that the the human body has to contend with in contemporary times. This is the story of a five year battle that a member of the Nursing profession dealt with after having a cesarean section.
Video: Proper Hand Washing
Plain and Simple
2. Wet your hands front and back.
3. Squirt with liquid soap or use bar soap.
4. Wash hands vigorously with friction hand against hand and fingers inbetween fingers for at least 15 seconds, include fingernails.
5. Rinse well until slipperyness is gone.
6. Dry with clean dry towel or paper towel and shut water off with towel in hand.
Note: If you use bar soap, it is best to rinse the bar after you have enough lather on your hands and place it in a vessel that allows excess water and air movement around the bar when not in use.
MAPS FOR PERSPECTIVE
Brown Recluse (Loxosceles Reclusa) Demographics in the USA
This is the map so wonderfully offered by the University of California, Riverside. Their spider research site is located here:
http://spiders.ucr.edu/
I was directed to this map by Rick Vetter and Glenda Crew.
Rick Vetter is an research associate of UCR and Glenda Crew is the web owner of SPIDERZRULE: http://www.spiderzrule.com/
I consider both of these people the most accurate in resource as they both approach the subject of spiders in general with a win/win situation when it comes to the spider's bad rap. Neither support the global extermination approach, rather offer alternatives via the avenue of common sense for living amongst them in our environment which in turn promotes our health decisions regarding our close encounters with them.
Of course this is the information of the US. Other countries have their own demographics available. The second map is of the state of florida that has some of the highest "reported spider bites" however of all the hundreds of subjective complaints per year, have a look at the actually proven by visualizing the specimen or research of the county reports from field identification.
One RECLUSE but Several LOXOSCELES
Wealth of Research, Reason and Common Sense
For the Florida Map Above: FPICN reports of brown recluse spider bite diagnoses made by medical personnel in Florida counties, 1997-2002. Two diagnoses were made from unknown counties. Shaded counties indicate no diagnoses reported in the database numbers with asterisks next to them indicate that Loxosceles spiders have been found in that county within the previous 100 years. There are many websites that you could find yourself on that have information about the Brown Recluse, however I have found that many are written for the purpose of sensationalism, promote sales or are a rendition of a reality fear factor series. You will find the greatest infractions of information on youtube. The majority of the stomach turning vids of squeezing and popping abcesses, ugly looking wounds are generally attributed to a the bite of a recluse without mentioning that they never saw what bit them nor had a specimen to have it identified as well as living in a state that do not even have recluse as residents. CA MRSA, General STAPH infection or Flesh Eating Organism is the usual culprit. In either case, of those that are showing self care of these wounds without professional medical advice or attention? Well we all know what ASSume really means do we not?

Facing the Recluse
There are several ways that insecticides work.
Neurotoxin: Interrupts the proper function of the neurological system causing paralasys, suffocation, starvation.
Contact: Cellular patency damage, due to dehydrant, relaxant or alkalinic reactions
Developmental: Interruption of reproduction, supporting sterility, disallowing completion of stage growth.
Unfortunately the word toxin is in all of the preparations availble in the market today. The majority of them can react with mammalian creatures in a damaging construct. Considering we as human beings are mammals, we too are at risk.
So be safe with what you use around your house. Know what you are using. Wear gloves when you are applying. Whether it states "safe for home use" or not. See what effects you get if you just spray outside the perimeter of your house foundation rather than using these materials inside your home. Be mindful of the wildlife around your house as well. Killing indiscriminately and completely may just have an ecological imbalance effect to your property and its peripheral wild life, such as birds, bees, earth worms, safety compromise for your vegetable garden, cooking herb garden, cross contamination of your streams and fish ponds. "THINK" before you spray. That is the safest mantra you could keep at the tip of your tongue.

- Generally not that large, yet dangerous envenomation from their bite causes inflammation reaction of redness swelling that may graduate to nausea and vomiting, repiratory problems, anaphylaxis (allergic reaction). In a few hours time redness may spread with coloration changes to the bite site turning blue to purple indicative to tissue starvation of oxygen due to blood vessel constriction leading to tissue death and necrosis (blackening and crusting). May also include muscle layers with the same effect. You may see red streaking away from the epicenter from the bite usually in an upward movement from the bite site. See following links. These reactions occur from between 2 to six hours and the later more severe, in less than 12 to 48 hours.

- Wikipedia of course is a resource site that has evolved to a wealth of information. This link is full of resource and if you are a blue link junkie like I am you will probably see something to click on and follow it for more reading. I hope you satisfy your curiosity as you click away on the myriads of blue links you will find here. You probably will be able to find your home use insecticides information here, just to have a beginning understanding. Go a bit further to research the health ramifications with the use of the "ACTIVE INGREDIENTS" listed.
I personally would not recommend the use of such chemcials in close proximity to women that are pregnant or lactating. Nor would I use product in the presence of children under that age of five. My personal opinion only. - Professional Paper (PDF) on Recluse Population/Identification NOT BORING!

Spiders Have History
Spiders are one of the most delicate creatures in the world that American Indian folk lore believes they play an important role in much of their lore and histories of their people. Spider is Grandmother, to the Native Americans, they are the link to the past and future. In India it's associated with Maya, the weaver of illusions. With its gentle strength, Spider spins together the threads of life with intricate webs. Some cultures believe that they are the original creators of the written language therefore leading to the spoken word. Should you find the spider totem in your life maybe she is sharing that you should speak your mind or maybe you are born to write. Spider is believed to know that the past affects the future and vise versa. To dream of them or should they come to cross your path frequently, they are attempting to bring you a message of changes that may benefit you in your life path. They encourage us to use our talents and our inherent nature to create. In doing so our dreams to a fulfilled life will be reached. There are many "spider woman stories in the American Indian culture. One of the common features of those stories are wisdom symbolized with spiders' webs (for example, she taught the human how to weave). Also generally accepted are the ideas that her "thread" connects the human world and the world of spirits or the "above world" and the "below world". Spider Woman also weaves the "relationship" of the Web of Life and all beings. Truly they are wonderful creatures and are nothing to be feared. Trust the appearance of the spider in your dreams or on your path. In her traits she has direction for you.

- There are a few things that this young lady offered that are triggers for what NOT to do in the presence of what was once a rash that spread.
1. Self treatment 'Dettol' is a European antibiotic ointment used topically, not unlike ointments here in the states like bacitracin, triple antibiotic, polymixin, etc.
2. Use of make up to hide the rash. You should never use any form of make-up or facial cover up. That includes lipstick, eye liner, eyelash applications, creams. Most make up products have as their ingredients as fillers, sugars in the form of starches (carbohydrates) and sometimes even honey which infact 'feed' the bacteria as well as non MRSA bacteria. Also in doing so you cross contaminate all applicators and makeup containers with the infecting bacteria, therefore risking re-infection over and over again. As a practice it is wise to dispose of all make up products and replace them and their applicators at least every six months or less as each use increases the introduction of your own body bacteria that colonates the main vessel.
After seeing this video you will understand why your mom may have taught you not to use any one elses razor, make-up, deoderant or hairbrush. All of these are vectors to expose yourself to MRSA from someone that does not even know they are a carrier.

- Great informational Lens. I've personally been bite twice by a Brown Recluse and it's no fun. Very painful bite and takes forever to heal. I'm trying out Natural Spider Repellents to keep spiders away and so far it seems to be working.

- Thank you for speaking up about this issue. I was told I "spider" bit me last year. I was given antibiotics. I told the doctor, there wasn't a spider in site...she didn't listen. A week later I was in the hospital with MRSA. It was a nightmare. More people need to be aware. Now I know what that spider looks like, which again, there was no spider in site :-)
