La Danse Macabre or The Dance of Death

Skeletons have been a symbol of death at least since the Middle Ages when they were portrayed as the Grim Reaper. Dancing skeletons are featured as participants in La Danse Macabre or the dance of death and as such skeletons have become objects of fear.

During Halloween skeletons are among the fearful monsters. These representations of the undead get paraded out as one of the many different scary ghosts, ghouls and goblins that people like to become for a night. Yet Skeletons are just bones, bones that allow people to stand upright. As such, skeletons can be used as a fun and just a bit scary way to educate children about skeletons about death and bone anatomy during Halloween.

This lens is a collection of skeletons, skulls and dancing skeletons selected to entertain and educate, not to cause fear. It is a bit historical and a bit educational, but mostly entertaining with a lot of ideas and items for how to incorporate skeletons into your Halloween activities (educational or other).

Note: Most of the video clips should be child friendly. I checked them out originally on my 5 and 7 year old. Be sure to view the entire video to make sure it is appropriate before sharing a clip with your child.

La Danse Macabre - The Dance of Death

La Danse Macabre, also called Dance of death, La Danza Macabra, or Totentanz, is a late-medieval allegory on the universality of death. No matter who you are, no matter what your station, death comes to us all.

According to the Britannica Concise Encyclopedia the Dance of Death is...

Medieval allegorical concept of the all-conquering and equalizing power of death, expressed in the drama, poetry, music, and visual arts of western Europe, mainly in the late Middle Ages. It is a literary or pictorial representation of a procession or dance of both living and dead figures, the living arranged in order of their rank, from pope and emperor to child, clerk, and hermit, and the dead leading them to the grave.

The Dance of Death emerged in response to feudalism and the Black Death of 1347-50, which killed a quarter of Europe's population. Sufferers of the plague, war, poverty and genocidal famine danced in desperation in graveyards, surrounded by symbols of death.

The Skeleton Dance 1929

35MM, BLACK & WHITE, MONO, 6 MINS, USA, NO DIALOGUE / DIRECTOR: WALT DISNEY / ANIMATION: UB IWERKS, LES CLARK, WILFRED JACKSON / MUSIC: CARL STALLING

Four skeletons, conjured up from their graves by the twelve strokes of midnight, dance and cavort to music. One skeleton beats mallet-like bones on the ribs of another. Yet another skeleton plays a cat like a bass violin, then others shimmy and Charleston. Everyone dances and plays until driven back underground by the cock's crow at sunrise.

The score includes an excerpt from Grieg's "March of the Dwarves" (1893) for the skeleton on the ribcage xylophone.

Dem Bones - Dem Dry Bones

The song "Dem Bones," also known as "Dry Bones" or "Dem Dry Bones," has been a staple of children's music to teach the bones in the body.

It is an African-American Spiritual in the public domain, based on a passage in the Bible from Ezekiel 37:1-14. In this passage, the prophet Ezekiel visits a valley full of bones and brings them to life simply by mentioning the Lord.

The popular tune associated with it was written by James Weldon Johnson with lyrics by his brother J. Rosamund Johnson.

Dem bones, dem bones gonna walk aroun'
Dem bones, dem bones gonna walk aroun'
Dem bones, dem bones gonna walk aroun'

Oh hear the word of the Lord!

The foot bone connected to the leg-bone,
The leg bone connected to the knee bone,
The knee bone connected to the thigh bone,
The thigh bone connected to the back bone,
The back bone connected to the neck bone
The neck bone connected to the head bone...

Them bones, them bones, them dry bones,
Now they're the working of the Lord.

Bones are heard of, but seldom seen,
    'Cept each year 'round Hallowe'en.

Dia de los Muertos - Day of the Dead

A Celebration of Those who have Died

Day of the Dead - El dia de los Muertos is a day (or a series of days) for people to celebrate the lives and the memories of those who have crossed the river separating life from death.

This festival to celebrate life is considered by many to be the most important holiday of the year in Mexico. Dia de los Muertos is also celebrated in many places in the United States.

October 31, our Halloween, marks the beginning of the fiesta celebrations. Even though the dates coincide with Halloween, Day of the Dead is not related to the All Hallows' Eve celebrated in the States.

Hi! I'm a Dancing Skeleton...

Making Learning Bone Anatomy Fun

For the past two years I have been volunteering my time developing special teaching sessions for both of my daughters' classes around Halloween using skeleton puzzles.

There are several point for the activity to help children:
    1. Develop an interest in anatomy
    2. Overcome their fears of Halloween skeletons
    3. Learn a bit about anatomy
    4. Desensitize the children to skeletons as objects to fear during Halloween.
I've used several different puzzles and handouts as part of the Halloween Skeleton/Bone Anatomy Activity.
